Kaila Mari: Well, here I am back after having quite an ordeal with my health. On October 27th I posted all about my breast nodule and surgery; now for an update: On November 1st I got a heart attack and never made it to the post surgical apt and results of my breast nodule remover. I was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital and from there was transferred to a cardiovascular center where they proceeded to preform open heart surgery to replace four completely blocked arteries; they farmed veins from my legs for this procedure. Needless to say I developed complications to include not having a bowel movement in 19 days and bleeding hemorrhoids. Now I am finally home and recuperating slowly but surely. It is nice to be able to post once again on this site. Looking forward to your prayers. |

Kaila Mari: Well I have to count my blessings so far. Following up on my situation...I previously posted that I had gotten the "chikungunya", effects of which can last up to a year. This includes swelling and inflammation of extremities with severe joint pains. My husband who I care for also got it. This is not contagious as it is only transmitted by an infected mosquito. I went to my doctor and of course he sent me for the usual annual tests and exams. Needless to say I have neglected my health for some time and now have to suffer the consequences. In the past week I have also undergone surgery, (still have to go next week to get stitches removed). Now waiting for pathological results on the nodule removed. Today had to solicit outside help to get my husband off the floor as he fell and skinned his forearm from wrist to elbow. A bloody mess as he is on blood thinning meds after blockage to his right heart artery one year ago. I am grateful to have been able to type a little here and there in spite of my numb left hand due to a pinched nerve. I have managed to enter some contests, (not much luck) but have not been able to review much during the past weeks. I have offered this not as a form of complaint or to garner pity but just to communicate with people as these four walls can get rather grim and stressful. |

Kaila Mari: Tonight we are under a Tropical Storm warning and a Hurricane watch. This atmospheric system is named Gonzalo and has a projected path to pass over St. Croix, Vieques, Culebra and Puerto Rico, Monday night to Tuesday morning. The general public has been asked to safeguard property and make arrangements to protect life. I am sure we will be without electricity nor water for several days thereafter. Winds are forecast to be between 85 and 90 miles per hr as Gonzalo goes from Tropical Storm status to Hurricane category 1 as it passes on the eastern part of Puerto Rico. |

Kaila Mari: Every nation has its own dialect or lingo-a unique way native people talk among themselves. The United States Virgin Islands is no different. I will share some cruzian sayings with you. If looking for someone and can't find them, you'd ask: Weh pah u deh? You see a nice car with hot rims, a paint job and a proper sound system, you'd say: Da fam kriss! When something amazing just happened: Mehson! When someone is getting on your nerve and you just can't take it any longer: Aye, de man... You're looking at a terrible performance: Da fam salt, ya! Someone is trying to get you to do something illegal and you want no part of it: Meen in dat! When a person is acting the fool: Usa clung, da man! A group of people: Ayo You see someone you don't really know that you'd like to speak to: Aye, check ya nuh? Let's get out of here: Leh we gan, deh man! You want someone out of your face: Geh from yah! If a friend asks how you are doing, you say: I deh deh or I deh ya fo so. I went to St. Croix, USVI at the age of 7 and lived there for 58 years. |

Kaila Mari: I have been out with a virus that is an epidemic in the Caribbean Islands and Puerto Rico. It is caused by a mosquito bite and is called chikungunya.Look for joint pain. The characteristic symptom of chikungunya fever is severe joint pain (or arthritis) in multiple joints, particularly in the extremities. ?In fact, the word chikungunya means "to be contorted" in the Kimakonde language, referencing the bent or hunched over appearance of victims suffering from joint pain. ?In most sufferers the joint pain will only last for a few days, however in older patients it may persist for longer. In some instances, the joint pain has been reported to last for several weeks, months or even years. Besides being down with the virus I also have a pinched nerve in my left shoulder. I have been literally bedridden as I couldn't walk from severe swelling in my extremities. I will be trying to write and review some; hope to get back in touch with my FS friends and make new friends. I see that I will have to try hard to get my fans back. I really missed you all! |

Kaila Mari: When do newbies get to be oldies? I hope I don't have to wait too many years because I can't afford to fool around with time anymore. Age no longer creeping up on me; it is now advancing like a locomotive train at full throttle. |

Kaila Mari: I have finally achieved (it)! Tonight I have gotten 17 of the most wonderful reviews any writer could wish for. They were lengthy, indepth, picky, strong, honest, encouraging, moderating, I would even say brutally frank. But, I enjoyed and appreciated each one of them. I have not looked to see how many stars I got, since I was too busy taking notes, saving, analyzing, studying and editing. It has been a lot to take in at one time. I have copied and saved many of the more lengthy comments and suggestions. You all have no idea how much I have learned tonight. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have all come through; I knew you could do it. I am such a happy camper! finally I can go to bed and perhaps sleep. Tomorrow (today?) is another day. God bless! |

Kaila Mari: I just finished viewing the voting results on the prompt entry write an ode to Winter. I entered the contest with the ode "Winter Wonderland" which came in (second) with 6 votes. Dean Kuch's ode came in (first) with seven votes as did Michaelcahil's with seven votes also. Congratulations go out to the winners. P.S. I noticed that all entries had several comments from voters and mine was the only one that although having 6 votes got not one comment. Thanks to all who honored me with their vote. This gives me the courage and motivation to keep on writing. I hope that little by little I become a better writer. I do expect that member writers on this page really and truthfully help me to achieve my goal by critiquing my work and giving me honest reviews. I would be totally devastated if someone gives a review that I haven't earned. I am looking at the reviews given certain posts and can tell that those given such reviews are really not honest or they are only interested in getting the member dollars and cents offered. I joined this page looking for REAL help towards my becoming a published writer and I still expect that to be so. Some reviewers are doing a great job; others not so good. It is frustrating to get reviews and no help. Constantly I am told that I have written a nice poem; seldom is a reviewer actually reviewing the poem or prose for its structure and format. Some don't even know what they are reviewing and do so base on the "story" they interpret from the poem. This is all good, but I think reviewing is much more than that. As you all can tell I am completely frustrated at this point and very disillusioned to say the least. I feel like I am floundering around by myself, wasting good money to obtain nothing in return. Don't get me wrong; I am not looking for kind reviews. I am looking for good reviews! The ones I can learn from and improve everyday more and more. Sorry for ranting but I had to get this off my chest other wise I would drown in my own tears. |

yes, there are those that may not be helpful, but I would suggest that it may take a bit more time that the couple of months, that you have been here to really begin to receive the kind reviews you are looking for.. all I can say to you, is just continue writing, and reading the work of others, so that you make yourself known...there are several hundred subscribers here, and I would say some of us might have felt the same frustration, in the beginning....give yourself a bit more time...I have entered contests and not receive any votes..still I remain and now do receive wonderful reviews for my work...also have made many friends, and I can depend on them for honest, thoughtful reviews...as I said, if I were not satisfied here, as so many are, I would not have been here for these many years... -
There are many on this site who review poetry. As Mrs. major said, it takes time to build a fan base and to become recognized by like-minded people here. If you stick around, you can learn many things by reviewing, and entering contests. I've been here since 2007 and I've learned a lot, made a lot of friends, professionally published short story and published many more stories and essays in e-zines. The main thing is not to become discouraged. -

Kaila Mari: Once there was a man who set out to paint his house; he liked eggshell white. As he painted a neighbor passed by to chat. "Why that color and not green?" the neighbor asked. After the neighbor left, the house owner brought out some green paint and continued to paint his house. Other neighbors came, stopped, and also had their opinion on what color the house should be painted. One said blue, another, yellow; others continued to offer colors such as orange. lilac and on, and on. At the end of the day, the house owner stepped back and looked at his horrifically, multicolor painted house from hell. Moral of the story...you can't please everyone. |

Do you remember the Ricky Nelson song, "Garden Party?" He was booed off the stage at Madison Square Garden in 1972 because of his long hair and contemporary clothing, so he wrote the song. The line I remember is: "Ya see, you can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself." That's my motto. I am the first one I have to please. Then it would be nice to please a few others. Good advice. Right? -

Kaila Mari: Today I have finally deciphered what gets a piece, especially poems, good reviews. It is utterly amazing! It is true some pieces deserve the ratings, but most people rate not on the structure of a piece or its diligence in following required instructions. Writers in some instances don't even look at points and dollars offered. Most pieces are being rated based on feelings and opinions conveyed. |
