oliver818: Lockdown in Shanghai is killing me. I thought Id use this time to write but actually I just feel a bit depressed and shitty so I can?t seem to get anything out. It sucks but that?s life when you choose to live in another country I guess. But im going to leave as soon as I can. And I dont plan to come back.

    Brad -

oliver818: Hi everyone.
I just added a new competition about writing from an unusual perspective. Those of you who regularly give feedback on my writing might have noticed this is something I like too play around with. There are a couple of reasons for this.

1- It is great fun to give voice to an inanimate object. If you haven't tried to imagine the voice of chair being sat down on by a really fat person then you're missing out on something.

2- It is really good practice for giving a distinctive voice to a character. The best writers are very good at finding interesting and unusual ways of distinguishing their characters, so trying this out with characters that are obviously different is a place to start.

3- Dialogue is fun but hard so practicing it with inanimate objects who you can give a voice to yourself is a really good opportunity.

I hope some of you will join in and have some fun!

Joe Consoli: Oliver, thank you for a reply on my free verse poem. I was just checking out your profile. I like personifying inanimate objects as well. In fact when I was in fifth grade, the assignment was to personify an inanimate object. Sister and said you could be a piece of chalk chalkboard or a school desk. I jumped on the school dust right away and I wrote one of my first creative stories called Bruisey, Brownsey, Strongstuff which spoke of the three different students who sat in the school chair at different periods of the day: one of them was me. I am somewhat interested in knowing what kind of money a writer can make getting published in today's world. -
    oliver818: Hi Joe.
Well I?d like to say I knew but I haven?t managed to publish anything for money yet. I think you need to find a niche market. There are lots I websites available where they might give a little bit if they like what you wrote though. -

oliver818: I know there is advice on here about showing not telling, but can anyone tell me some concrete steps I can take to avoid it? What should I look for when I'm proof reading? And is it ok to tell a little bit or is is just best to avoid it entirely? Thanks for your help!
Fridayauthor: I'm writing and posting a memoir so there is a lot of information that needs "telling." I try to incorporate it into dialog as much as I can. If I want to describe some trait about a character, I try to have them do something that demonstrates it. Also, one character can "tell" another something instead of the author doing so. Just a couple of examples. Good luck! -
jpduck: In addition to using plenty of dialogue, it is good to describe character's emotions in terms of their body language, thoughts and visceral actions. I can strongly recommend 'The Emotion Thesaurus' by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi in this context. It is available in paperback from Amazon.

oliver818: What can I do if no one reviews a piece I posted?
michaelcahill: Be patient. You just posted it. Your piece will remain up for review until you receive your two reviews. If you want more reviews, you have to review others yourself and promote your piece. It also establishes relationships with other authors. That's how you start building up a fan base. It takes some time. :)) -
oliver818: Thanks for the advice!I will get into reviewing other's works at once -
mrsmajor: I realize that reviews are important to any writer...but sometimes its not quantity, but the quality of the review that's most important...I read some of your stories, and there are very good writers here that reviewed some offering excellent comments, and advice...those are the ones to look for, and they will begin to follow your work as you create more stories...also because your stories are so long, with a 2 member cents, I believe you might only receive reviews from writers that have something to offer...for example...I might pass up such a long piece, while a
good prose writer will take the time to read a entire post...reviewing others will help in building up a fan list, but if you want reviews Now, you might have to buy some member cents to post higher...I say that because it appears you are only getting the allowed 2 reviews...that should tell you something...some are not going to read long pieces for only 2 member cents...I read some of your work, and although I write poetry, the length of the piece scared me away..now I;m only giving my personal thoughts, and they may not be helpful...but I do wish you the very best,..and even I appreciated the reviews you got, from really good prose writers...which I am not...but you will see that this is a family of writers, and we each want to see the other succeed, and reach there goal...like I said, I am speaking from a readers point of view, not a prose writer...jus be patient, everything takes time!

I certainly wish you Well.... -
oliver818: Thank you Mrsmajor. I appreciate the info. I am new here am only just working out how it works so this helps a lot. many of the stories I wrote are indeed long do I totally understand what you mean. I'll keep trying and see what happens. Thanks again -
Mary Wakeford: Oliver, welcome to FS! I will head over and read one of your works now. If you go to the community tab, then search a member-> go to the letter G -> click on gloria... then go to her portfolio and seek out her FanStory Tutorial's! They are great resources and will get you up to speed very quickly on the FS protocol...rebiewing, rating, reciprocating...etc. I muddled around here for a few weeks while receiving information piecemeal, before Gloria posted these. They are WONDERFUL and will be very helpful to you!

Much for the advice Mary, I will go and have a read now -
