trimple: IF 2020/2021 WAS A MATHS PROBLEM, IT WOULD LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS:-

If you're walking on the icecream @ 5 ounces per toaster and your bicycle loses a sock, how much gravy will you need to re-paint your hamster?

trimple: Good morning folks.

This Coronavirus is most strange...

We are told that it is highly contagious and that we should all wear masks, wash our hands regularly and keep a reasonable distance between one another. Odd then, that my mother-in-law has been diagnosed with it and yet her husband, who has recently undergone chemotherapy for cancer and has been very poorly indeed, has no sign of it at all and has been diagnosed virus-free, yet they live with and sleep with one another!
Colin John: Yes very odd and I bet their are quite a few stories like that but not in the public ear. My niece's in-laws went into hospital together, both had an illness and both caught Covid while there and both had Covid on their death certifcate. -
trimple: I'm very sorry to hear of your sad loss, Colin. -
nor84: Some people have an immunity which can't be explained. Back in the sixties there was the Hong Kong flu, nowhere this dangerous at least not to younger people. My husband and I came down with it and had temperatures of 104F. My friend, who lived with us at the time, was slightly inconvenienced with a temperature of about 100 and only for a few days. My husband and I were sick for weeks.

My father lived and worked during the 1918 flu. He said people came to work apparently healthy and were "carried out." He didn't get the flu until he got a different flu from my mother in the nineteen thirties.

Certainly the co-vid virus is very contagious. Perhaps your father-in-law has a natural immunity or that the chemotherapy drugs have some impact. -
trimple: Poor you! Nor. Interesting that you mention 'immunity' My father-in-law wondered if, by some default, his Chemo treatment had somehow increased his natural immunity to this Coronavirus, but as we know, ordinarily, this particular treatment decreases the immune system considerably. -
nor84: Come to think of it, I don't remember Dad ever having the flu. Unfortunately, I'm not that lucky. -
lightink: So, about 10% of all humans have natural immunity to certain viruses (different 10% for different viruses) - thus, complete extinction due to a single virus is unlikely... He might have been one of the lucky ones. Or he might have had immunity due to an earlier infection with a different but similar strain of coronavirus. (Also, certain cancer medications might actually kill the virus. They found a few that seem to have that effect in the early stage of studies. I'm sending good thoughts to both of them. I hope she'll recover quickly and that he'll never catch it. Mat he get better soon, as well! -
lightink: Oops, sorry for the typos: *MAY he get better* -
djsaxon: It is now a pandemic. It is a spamdemic. -

Indeed I wrote this and left a trio of open questions... He cannot see the horizon... is this reference to his view of the future? His breakfast and favorite book... the bible perhaps, before execution, or maybe his own suicide, or as you suggest, his freedom after serving his time. Maybe he's reading Voltaire, Darwin... Who knows :)

    Thank you my friend

trimple: Food for thought...

trimple: Just returned back to the U.K. after spending 10 days in Silicone valley and decided to venture out to San Francisco in search of the 'Holy Grail' of hamburgers...

So there I am, soaking up the sun outside this recommended burger joint, my mouth straining to curl its way around this 'cow in a bun' that had more trimmings than a scissor-happy hairdresser's floor, when a guy in his late 70's casually walked passed me, stark bollock naked! He had a small white poodle in one hand and a baguette in the other! All he had on was a hat!

Nobody said a word as he strolled along the street as cool as a cucumber!

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for freedom of expression, but Is this normal for you guys? LOL
michaelcahill: Heck no! We don't wear hats in California. I'm shocked. I apologize on behalf of my state. I don't even want to ask ... was the poodle spayed? -
    trimple: LMAO!

Not sure if the dog was spayed, but it had a shiny pink collar on that clashed with his green hat... -
Linda Engel: Mikey would never be caught wearing a hat. That is too funny but then, again, it was San Francesco. What was the hamburger joint? -
mrsmajor: Of course not...here in some places in new York, these men at least have their butts covered...although so much of their underwear isn't...lol -
trimple: I think the burger joint was called 'Sooper Dooper' but it was awful. Just a greasy mess...

Mind you, I spoke to a few people in the U.S. who claimed that the 'Holy grail' of burgers didn't exist. -
evilynne: Perhaps he was trying to convey the naked truth. Evi -
Rubylou: My prayers and thoughts are with your wife and you. -
Rubylou: OOps, saved comment the wrong box. Sorry.
I did read about your adventure in CA. Very interesting! LOL -

Am I missing something here? lol
I am Cat: Well, if you are... we all are.

***You can not vote for this contest if you have an entry. ***

***It's important that all contest participants participate in the vote.

    Which is it? -
michaelcahill: You can't vote for yourself because your haven't already voted for yourself.
    That's the logic.
Bottom line, you can't vote in the contest. -
michaelcahill: You can't review yourself. I left that out. Duh. :)) -
michaelcahill: It sounds like I wrote the rules doesn't it... -
TAB_that's me: So did any of you who had entries in the "First they came for.." contest try to vote? I didn't even try as I've tried in these before. I really don't want to spend the time reviewing all of them for 2 cents. I've reviewed half of them but for 2 cents. Padumachitta though said she got to vote - ?? How?? Because she started the contest maybe? I hate when we can't vote in a contest we are in or see how the vote is going. -
ravenblack: I reviewed every one...and can't vote. Que sera sera. At least I know there are many great entries. -
michaelcahill: Actually there was a contest where you could vote on classic but not on the new format or vice versa ... a glitch. A couple of us managed to vote. Maybe it isn't fixed. -
TAB_that's me: Ah, I just went to the new version, reviewed the ones I hadn't reviewed and was able to vote. -
trimple: Yup, ya right, Tab. Now having reviewed all, I can vote but only on the new version.

    Very misleading I must say.

    -
trimple: From what I see across the board, most people use the old format, so perhaps, Tom should either twin both editions or at the very least make the members aware of the differences.

We also need the voting rules to be made clearer as the above contradictory ruling demonstrates. -
I am Cat: I always read them all... Not necessarily get to reviewing them all before the contest ends. It hasn't stopped me from voting yet. New version... Hmmm -

trimple:

None of us are blameless...
Kingsland: War is so wrong. Killing and destruction is wrong. The only war to end war, is to never fight in another war. There is a phrase that goes like this. Just imagine that that started a war and nobody came. The only way to end war, is not to fight in them... -
Kingsland: What is so hard to understand

A dearth of low level sounds
    At the mountain top
    No clouds are found
There is a point that has dulled

    Mankind creates its own hell
It's all in the directions we have chosen
When it's cold enough, water gets frozen
The bed is made, then we lay in it

    Out of the frying pan
    So on and so forth
All is in front for eyes to see
But do we have the capacity?

For we surely have the need
    So blind that we be
We cannot see the forest for the trees
    An ignorance of immorality

    When we permit atrocities
It's a sad sad state of all that is
When will we learn to live and let live?
It's time to take a step back

    Do unto others
    We are all brothers
    Love your fellow man
    Reach out a helping hand
What is so hard to understand?

    John Allen Kingsland -

trimple: Now, as far as poems go, there are no rights or wrongs , but there is form, structure, feel, and delivery. In amongst that lot, somewhere, there is what I call; the 'soul' of the writing.

You challenge your mind, and deliver your thoughts. That is what you do.

Your thoughts are not the soul. Your thoughts are vessels of communication that need molding in order to create the emotion that appeals to the conscious, and unconscious mind....in this case, the reader.

Sometimes, thoughts alone cannot deliver the emotion needed when writing a poem. You need to develop its 'soul'

Nouns are, in a sense, static and stationary, robust and full-proof. They do not bend or move unless you bend them.... with mostly, GOOD adjectives.

Yet, be careful. Many new poets, and many old, (who should know better) sometimes tend to over compensate their poetry with TOO MANY adjectives.

An adjective can be the light of a poem or the glaze of disaster. Chose your adjective well, and use it when it serves purpose, or there is a reason to believe you are just creating superficial decoration.

With prose, you have time to develop and lull into a sense of feel, and direction.
With poetry you have no time. You must formulate with only a few words, therefore the adjective becomes your most potent weapon, or you most poetic death.

Use wisely friends.

'There is a difference between writing poetically and writing poetry.'

When we truly grasp the difference, we will undoubtedly write better poems.

Copy pasted from a most talented writer here on FS
Marillion: That's very well said, Tracey, so kudos to you for posting it, and also to the author of the quote. It's excellent advice. -

trimple: The drug war is a total scam, prescription drugs kill 300K a year, while marijuana kills no one, but they spend billions/year 'fighting' it, because pot heads make for good little slaves to put into private prisons, owned by the banks who launder the drug money!

trimple: does anyone know of a good British writing site that does not require hours of reviewing or having to spend a fortune in order to have your work looked at?
DIS-illusioned: Yes...but it's in the dark recesses of my deluded mind (and don't you dare tell me my mind isn't a good British writing site!). -
Sally Carter: Forward Poetry has a members' section, which I have joined. However, from what I see so far, any comments are of the "Oh, isn't that lovely" variety. But to be fair, I haven't fully explored it, so don't write it off on my say-so. They do also run competitions which are free to enter. Might be worth a look. If nothing else it might lead you on to other places. -
    shelley kaye: ask google lol
    -
trimple: Dis you is not British! :)
Sally thanks I shall take a look see :)
Shelly, I was hoping to get a recommendation, but thanks you :) -

You not only can post your articles, you earn from them as much as 70% of the advertising revenue. You may mention my name as the person introducing you. -
    trimple: Hi Sylvia
I shall look into it, thank you :) -

trimple: Jean-Paul Sartre is sitting at a French café, revising his draft of Being and Nothingness. He says to the waitress: I'd like a cup of coffee, please, with no cream. The waitress replies: I'm sorry, Monsieur, but we're out of cream. How about with no milk?
    DIS-illusioned: Bwahaha! :-) -

trimple: One day the zoo-keeper noticed that the orangutan was reading two books - the Bible and Darwin's Origin of Species. Surprised, he asked the ape, "Why are you reading both those books?" "Well," said the orangutan, "I just wanted to know if I was my brother's keeper or my keeper's brother."
    Sally Carter: Very good! -
DIS-illusioned: Well now, that anecdote is just false, as we all know that zoo-keepers can't tell the difference between ape-types, or between monkeys and apes.
(It was really a 'gorilla' perusing those books.) -
mrskristinball: You are hilarious! Fantastic jokes, and I'm thinking you wrote these yourself...can you claim any of them as your own? If so, more please:-)
    -
    trimple: mrskristinball

    sadly no, I didn't invent them :) -

trimple: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Just spent three hours working on a poem. Hit save, and was taken to a page stating that I already had a piece with the said title.
Work was automatically deleted!
Sally Carter: No! Are you sure? That happened to me once, ie inadvertently used a title I'd used before, but it gave me the chance to re-name it. That's awful. -
trimple: Yup I'm afraid so Sally.
I'm so gutted, I had been working on a series of poems about William Hogarth's
    "A Harlot's Progress"
    Spits and screams! -
flippant: Oh no!! I write in Word or e-mail myself for this reason. Worst feeling in the world. -
Sally Carter: Yeah, don't want to rub salt in, Tracey, but I never write direct onto FS unless it's something very, very short. It's amazing that even if you have written something yourself, spending hours going overt it line by line, once it's been lost the brain (well my brain anyway) just can't re-create it. We all feel for you. It sounds a brilliant theme for a series of poem. I must explore more... -
adewpearl: That has happened to me several times when I've used a title from a while back. I never compose my poems on the page though, so the worst that has happened to me is I had to copy it all over from the manuscript. -
shelley kaye: dang i hate when that happens!
    -
trimple: Found the bugger! :) -

"Temple Grandin my experience with autism"

Tune in for this unusual presentation on autism by someone with autism. Animal Science professor Temple Grandin, who designs livestock handling facilities, discusses the value of early intervention in autism, and about medications. Other topics include her sensory sensitivities and how she manages them, how she and other autistic people think, and social relationships and careers. Series: "M.I.N.D. Institute Lecture Series on Neurodevelopmental Disorders"

atticus63: Did you see the terrific HBO film about her? I do believe it is just called Temple Grandin. It was with Claire Danes and it was truly fantastic. See it, if you can. -

Interests
Film. Especially British and French film making. Good food, writing, art
Married to an artist and have two grown children (a pigeon pair) and two beautiful grandchildren, Isabella and Abigail.

I Love making things from old junk.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is my favorite writer. I just love the way he manages to make the most ordinary and mundane appear thrilling and magical and Frederico Lorca, a poet who makes the page of a poem, breathe.
