Jenn Starr: I have labored sore
and suffered death
And now I rest to draw my breath;
But I shall come and call right soon
Heaven and Earth and Hell to doom
And then shall know
Both Devil and Man
What I was
And what I am
-anonymous-

I've always loved this! Anyone else recognize it?
Jenn Starr: I first read it in The Norton Anthology of Poetry when I was like 14. I immediately memorized it and it's been one of my favorites since- there's just something so beautiful and haunting about it. ;) -
Julia Yampolsky: Jen,are you all right? This piece you posted here, makes me think that you aren't. Just pop and say Hi. -
    Jenn Starr: Yes
I'm ok hon! This is just a poem I read when I was younger, and I've always liked it- it's supposedly spoken by Christ- in The Norton Anthology of Poetry, it's labeled anonymous- it's just so haunting. Don't worry hon, I'm good, just been really busy- -
misscookie: Hi, Justwantedto know how your doing and howis my young man ethan doing give him ahug for me. take care. -
Jenn Starr: I'm good hon! Ethan Is AWESOME as usual! Just had to deal with some unexpected issues and haven't been able to get on- soon tho!- I hope all is well with you!!!!! Take care hon
    JennStarr* -
misscookie: Hello my dear eys haven't seen you post anything in ahile,I pray you andBuddy are well. Happy Hopilday to you guys. -

Jenn Starr: I told someone tonight that their story reminded me of Romeo and Juliet, and they said "It's an old movie right?" WHAT!!!! They had never read it and didn't even know what it was!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! tell me this is an oddity and not common!! Does the new generation not know who Shakespeare is? If so, we are truly heading towards the end!!! What a huge chunk of beauty to take from education, from the art of literature! There is NO substitute for Shakespeare!!!! Oh my God! I am in total shock!
Jenn Starr: I know!!! You said it exactly! I read Romeo and Juliet in 9th grade, it was Julius Ceaser in 10th, then Hamlet- we also did a Mid summer nights dream and King Lear In drama- Shakespeare has always just been there- I can't imagine a world without him!!!! How gloomy! -
    S. R. Christian: Ah, Julius Caesar - I wish that one could be put into the curriculum. For gr. 10, we read 'To Kill A Mockingbird', which was great, too. -
Jenn Starr: personally, I think Hamlet is my fav ;) though Julius Ceasar has some wonderful lines like
"at one point we are all masters of our own fate- the fault is not in our stars but in ourselves that we are underlings" -
    S. R. Christian: Nice. How's Mid Summer Night's Dream? I've never got to read that one, but it always sounded interesting, if not one of his best works. -
Jenn Starr: Well I read it as a script and I don't remember lots of it- I used to do technical theater so I wasn't in the play- we also did HMS Pinafore- which is a comedy- -
    R. K. Alan: Like, you mean they made the movie, like, into a book? Like, how cool is that. And, like, who's this dude call Shake Spere. Sounds like a rock group, man.

Oh how sad, when Harlequin Romance rules the school yards... :( -
Jenn Starr: Oh Krylon! It's so terrible isn't it!!!! ;( it actually makes me sad!!!! I know they took Mark Twain out because his writing was "too authentic" (meaning it had a derrogatory term that some people just couldn't get past)- I met a young couple years ago who had never even heard of Kurt Vonnegut! SHAME SHAME!!! I literally gave them every Vonnegut book I had! I'm only 29 yet this literary gap is ASTOUNDING!!!! Please tell me that Twilight is not the new classic literature!!!! So sad!!!!! -
Julia Yampolsky: Hi Jen, thank you for reading and reviewing my poem "Photo op" about the last Russian Czar execution. The art work before the poem is actually a real photo of the Royal family.
And now, reading your posts here about people not knowing about Romeo and Juliet, makes me sadly feel OK about one review I got with 4 stars. The reviewer said that without my notes she wouldn't know what the poem was about. I know it's a piece of Russian history, but I always thought that it was a great part of the entire world history as well - a major change that changed the world we live in today. -
Jenn Starr: Didn't you write what it was about in the authors notes? How annoying to get marked down because of someone elses inability to understand especially when you provide the information! I did bot know that story before reading your poem- but after reading the authors notes and re reading the poem I feel that I've been enriched with a piece of history- oh well, unfortuantly we gotta deal with those kinds of reviews- I had a similar review because the person didn't know the meaning of a word! That's not my fault- but we learn to take it with grace- I told him what it meant and kindly asked him to review it again- I'm still waiting... ;) -
misscookie: Thought for the day: 'It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." -
Jenn Starr: Nice! I like that- "the more you know, the more you realize you don't know ;)" -
misscookie: T- Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life. -
misscookie: T- Worry is intrest pasid on trouble brflore it comes due. -
Jenn Starr: I like these daily pearls! Keep leaving them if you like! ;) -

Jenn Starr: "...And a goddess she is, though not for her beauty alone- but for the depth of her scars, and the spice of her wounds-"
From Conspiro- I always liked this part-- most of the poem is in Latin so I can't really post it

Jenn Starr: geez, just got a 4 cuz the person liked it so much they wanted it to be longer!
adewpearl: I reviewed that poem and it is lovely. I've had people dock me a point for the very same reason - it is one of the most frustrating kind of reviews ever when someone says, "I love it so much I wanted it to keep going." If they hated it because the detail was insufficient, that's another matter, but they just wanted it to be longer than the writer believed it should be? Yep, that sucks. -
Jenn Starr: I thought it was perfect the way it was- it is shorter than I usually make my poems but it just felt so complete- the parts he thought I should elaborate on were details, not the focus of the poem- it was just kind of a silly thing- but it's totally cool ;) I'm glad he liked it enough to want more! ;D -
    shelley kaye: LOL! :)
    -

Jenn Starr: It seems like the only time I get reviews is the first couple hours after I list my work but for the next two days I don't really get anything??? Weird- also when I look at my portfolio page, it says how many views I've had as opposed to reviews- is views how may people have actually read the piece? It's usually much higher than the reviews- does this mean people are skipping my work? Anyone wanna help shed light on this for me? Thanks SO much!
redrider6612: It's true, most of your reviews will come in the first few hours, but don't let that deter you from promoting, and don't buy the cheaper certificate. It's just not worth it.

"Views" are how many times anyone has looked at the piece. If you don't have content sharing shut off, the views will include those who hit your piece when they Googled the subject--or so I've heard.

Don't let the ratio of viewed to reviewed bother you--"viewed" is always higher. After all, you're quality over quantity, right? I basically ignore the viewed counter. As for the number of reviews showing in your portfolio--that is just below the "last viewed" date. -
Jenn Starr: the more expensive cert just puts it up for another day right? i always get the pot of gold one for 6.55- I don,t usually have many more dollars than that- I haven't allowed myself to save any up cuz I've been keeping my writing listed- -
Border Reiver: The more expensive pots also pay the reviewer more, so you're likely to get more reviews. Once the reviews die down, that's when you can use those banners. I know you said you don't get any reviews from them, perhaps that's because the poems only pay 27c. Also, if you allow content sharing, that means anyone who Googles a word in you poem can open it up, that counts as a view, but naturally, they're not going to review. Plus, when going through the "up next," some members just don't feel confident reviewing poetry and press skip until they find a bit of prose they feel they can comment on. -
Jenn Starr: That totally makes sense- thanks! I'm still getting the hang of all this- I usually try to raise my writing to the 1st or 2nd page to raise the reward- I'm just gonna have to save up some member dollars so I can get the good pots ;) I appreciate your input and help everybody!!!! You're all so wonderful! ;) -

Jenn Starr: Am truely amazed at some of the novelists on here! Wow! You guys humble me! ;)

Jenn Starr: Had a mis understanding- people please realize, I'm new here and am not well versed in formal poetry- if you don't agree with a review please express so with grace and know that I DO NOT condescend and if it's coming across that way, there's a mistake- I am not egotistical about my writing and/or my abilities- I'm on here to be humbled, and to improve- sorry to anybody that has mis understood-
Take care
JennStarr*
Triple P: You sound like me, when I first joined just a little while ago. I've learned that as long as you give 5 stars, you can offer whatever suggestions you like, and people will take them well. I've even had people jump down my throat for giving them 4 stars, and I thought 4 stars was good! -
Triple P: Now I just review if I like the poem. If I can't give it at least 4 stars, I don't bother reviewing it. -
Jenn Starr: I did hive four stars on this particular review! I won't dare put less! It isn't worth the trouble! I agree, I'll just skip it if it's that terrible -
--Turtle.: ratings are a point of much contention. *sigh, competition is a double edge sword. If you ever pass my stuff and see a three, feel free to point it out without worry of trouble. -
Jenn Starr: I doubt that'll happen my friend! ;) your not a 3 writer! But I will let you know if I ever think you're writing below your potential, as I want you to do with me- the person that I had a mis understanding with, ended up giving me the best review I've had yet! As far as constructive criticism- she really had insight into my writing! So fortunately we were able to put our stumble behind us- I can understand how people get disappointed with lower ratings- I found myself a bit Panged when someone gave me a 4 because of capitalization! But I realized that it was probably just cuz it wasn't their cup of tea, and they just didn't see it as a five star piece, and I'm ok with that- but it did push my ranking down 20 spots which was disappointing- oh no! It's happening to me!!!! Lol just kidding- but I do understand- I am here for the constructive criticism though, so it's cool-;) ;) ;) -
--Turtle.: Once you get sucked into the rankings :o
Thanks for the complement. (a tip, never buy a Banner) -
Jenn Starr: Ha I already learned that lesson! I had a free banner supreme and didn't get a single review from it! Not even one! And it's not cuz my piece totally sucked, it's gotten a good response- I guess no one reads those banner thingies- I definitely wouldn't buy one! -

Jenn Starr: I don't think these Banner supreme certificates work very well- I've had mine up for a over 24hrs and not a single review!!! Wth!!!
Border Reiver: Do you have another certificate on it? If it's still no offering much money, people probably won't look at it. -
Jenn Starr: Well it's on like the 1st or top of the 2nd page I raised it a bunch of times- I don't know maybe cuz I'm not a recognized author? -
Border Reiver: It might be the time of day x -
Jenn Starr: hmmm, still not a single review on Eidolon- the one witht he banner- and it's had all good reviews so it can't be cuz it sucks, can it? -

Jenn Starr: Ok now I was told tonight (as a response to a review) that a review and rating is not supposed to be based on whether I personally liked the writing or not- but for the technical stuff- really? Isn't that an editor? When you read a movie review the stars are based on how that person felt about the movie- people will follow reviewers when they tend to agree with their opinion and trust their view- thereby determining if the movie is worth seeing- I don't rate on minor punctuation or spelling mistakes but the quality of the writing- and the content is not AS important as the quality but ummm yea it does play a role- I mean come on- I'm also finding people who are really hung up on the stars I'm giving them- their desire for a better rating is getting in the way of evolving as writers- oh well-
adewpearl: I agree that rating should include whether the story is logical, or if the characters are well-developed, that sort of thing. Sometimes reviewers will rate on other sorts of personal preferences that seem an unfair basis for deducting points, like, they'll tell a writer they just don't like horror stories or don't like it if dialogue contains obscenities. Now, that is the kind of personal preference one should not rate down for. I have not read the review you gave to know why the person took exception, so I have no idea why this person was upset. Some people just get upset if they don't get a five! LOL -
Border Reiver: Yeah Jenn, the rating of the review should be based on the technical side of the story. If a story is full of errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar, then you can't really give it 5 stars, even if you love it It would be doing the author an injustice. But of course, do tell the author you love their work.
In the same way marking a piece down, just because it's not to your taste, even if it's really well written, is very unfair. If you don't like something, the best thing to do is just skip it. If it really is that bad, the author will get the hint due to the lack of reviews. -
    Border Reiver: Hi Jenn,
I've just seen the review and response. The author was out of order. As Brooke said, "Some people just get upset if they don't get a five." It's his only 3 star ever? He certainly needs to come to his senses and sort his ego out.
You were rating on the technical side, he just chose to see it as a personal attack. I had a similar response following a recent review I wrote. Some people aren't here to hone their writing skills, even though they claim to. They just want to be told they are already perfect in every way.
    -
Jenn Starr: Thank you- I agree 100% that you shouldn't rate things badly based on things such as not liking the genre- or even the topic- I DON'T think a person should be given 3 stars just because they forgot a comma or two- make a note of it to them so they can fix their likely typo, but don't give an otherwise great review less because of a mere typo- these are not set to publish, are they? That's what an editor is for- some very talented writers are lacking in punctuation and spelling skills sometimes- the only time I rate badly based on these errors is when it actually disrupts my ability to read the piece-I do agree on what you said about the other side of the technical stuff- the format, the breaking up of words, syntax, all that stuff- that affects the quality if the work-
Thanks so much for your responses guys!
    Have a wonderful day!!!
    Take care
    JennStarr* -
--Turtle.: Giving ratings to others stresses me out. Its so much easier to take a tough review than give it. But their is more to writing than just well structured sentences. Now if I could just figure it all out. :) -
mmmichelle34: I would like to add my two cents in this conversation.. really I have noticed the ones that get the most reviews are the ones who add certificates and bring up the price for the rating then as for that said what ever they say weather they like it or not they still get the points and the bonus money for the rating. enstead of skipping it because of bad language or bad spelling or bad what ever they think they did not like it for what ever reason the person is pretty much stuck with that bad rateing and the other person get the benafits. you could have an awsume work and not bonus and there will be no ratings maybe two. i dont mind if they tell me about my spelling because I do know i spell BAD but why drop due to the spelling or missplaced comma. they should say so .. so the person can change it -
Jenn Starr: I agree hon! i think it's the quality of the writing that should primarily be rated- -

Jenn Starr: sorry guys, I'm still getting the hang of everything- Thanks so much for all your reviews so far! quick note, I tend to incorperate some latin into my writing sometimes- I will put their definitions under Authors notes next time-
Latin is just so beautiful, and sometimes when I can't find the right word in English, I go to Latin- thanks!
(Broadway Beauty contains a few latin words)
