A Quatern for Potlatch Poetry

Taking Back

by damommy

The forest has reclaimed its own,
has taken back what it had lost.
Once grand estate is overgrown –
infringe on Nature at a cost.

Though some walls stand in ruin and wrack,
the forest has reclaimed its own.
It was a slow but fierce attack
that took down mighty walls of stone.

Who lived here once is now unknown,
and from the view past rusty gate,
the forest has reclaimed its own
and new growth will accelerate.

Now, here’s a lesson to be learned -
this woodland spot was just on loan
and to its origin returned.
The forest has reclaimed its own.

The challenge was to pick a landscape and write about it. I chose a painting by Konstantin Andreyevich Somov (1869 - 1939).

A Quatern is a sixteen line French form composed of four quatrains. It is similar to the Kyrielle and the Retourne. It has a refrain that is in a different place in each quatrain. The first line of stanza one is the second line of stanza two, third line of stanza three, and fourth line of stanza four. A quatern has eight syllables per line. It does not have to be iambic or follow a set rhyme scheme.
