A Ballad for Potlatch Poetry

Queen of His Heart

by damommy

“Please promise you won’t bet or drink,”
the dying woman said.
With over-flowing eyes, the man
could only nod his head.

Temptation reared its ugly face.
Before long, he was caught.
He took up with a roguish gang,
their ways became his lot.

Soon, drinking and then gambling took
ahold his very soul.
Their fiendish fingers slowly crept
until they had control.

One day, he drew the winning card
and turned it up to see
his dear one’s face.  It seemed to say,
“You broke your vow to me.”

That’s all it took to call a halt.
He tossed the cards aside,
from that day forth, took up the oath
he’d made before his bride.

His life renewed, began again,
would ne’er again depart
from pledges spoke the last sad day
to her, queen of his heart.

A short narrative poem with stanzas of two or four lines and usually a refrain (but not always). The story of a ballad can originate from a wide range of subject matter but most frequently deals with folk-lore or popular legends.
They are written in straight-forward verse, seldom with detail, but always with graphic simplicity and force. Most ballads are suitable for singing and, while sometimes varied in practice, are generally written in ballad meter, or common meter, i.e., alternating lines of iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter, with the last words of the second and fourth lines rhyming.
