A Unique Trick-or-Treater

I dressed my box turtle to look like a snail,
and thought it would be quite a hoot.
Then gave him a bag and said, “Let’s hit the trail.”
Bet none could resist him in costume so cute.

The first door we went to, they looked right at me,
and said, “Aren’t you just a bit old?”
I pointed at turtle, “It’s him, don’t you see?”
They doubled with laughter, across the floor rolled.

The next door we went to, they slammed in my face
without even looking at him.
This just wasn’t working, went back to our place,
and made a new outfit with trim.

This time we went out, on my shoulder he sat.
Not a hint of a laughter was heard.
We stood there among all the witches and bats -
he was dressed as a parrot-y bird.
