A Villanelle about the mass killing in El Paso, Texas

Yesterday Was in the Past

by Henry King

Yesterday was at long last in the past
Tomorrow is somewhat in the future
Today, yet the same, to forever last

City built of adobe that was cast
Yards, playgrounds for our children's adventure
Yesterday was at long last in the past

The victims, each from a different caste
Their desires like ours, seek no great furor
Today, yet the same, to forever last

Killer said, El Paso die! A blood blast
He a NAZI following Der Fuhrer
Today, yet the same, to forever last

The policemen were first to be aghast
A real bloody Tarantino chiller
Yesterday was at long last in the past

Our leaders in D.C. full of bombast
They say we need change but go no further
Yesterday was at long last in the past
Today, yet the same, to forever last

The picture is of the memorial erected within hours of the mass killing. The flags of the United States of America, Republic of Mexico and Federal Republic of Germany are flown in honor of all the victims who were citizens from those three countries. The crosses are for the twenty-two victims who were killed in the attack.

After a long night of sorrow and prayers for the victims and family, I had to say something. This young NAZI, Patrick Crusius, in his Manifesto, blames the ills of unemployment and crime in the United States of America on Latin Americans. The instigation for those wrong thoughts, I hope, did not come from his parents and teachers.
