Snails -v- slugs

A chapter in the book Living in the garden

Living in the garden

by JanPerry

The garden creatures all like to congregate in the garden once in awhile just to make sure the slugs know their "place in life" and don't get "ahead" of themselves.

A Snail
Good morning William, are you green with envy?

William the slug
No I'm not,
I'm brown like sap.
And with that the "brown" slug wiggles over to visit the other snails.

Millicent snail the (3rd)
Get a life over there.
All the "shells" slither over to  feast on "green heaven". (That's grass with a touch of dew).

William sings
When a snail's not a snail, it's a slug.
When a 'pillar's not a fly, it's a bug.
If it wiggles far away, there will surely come a day,
he'll get eaten by a mammal gone astray!
That's when a snail's not a snail - it's a slug!
ail, it's a slgen by a mammal gone astray.
Millicent Snail
That's green heaven to you slug, ick. Don't you freeze to death without cover?
She looks him up and down with utter disdain.

William the slug

I'm fine. I go under boards in houses. Where snails can't go, you know.

Millicent Snail
Humph, well, I'd like to see that!
She now directs her attention to the dandelions.

William the slug
Okay, here I go.
William 'R. S. Slug' slides gracefully under the door only to be confronted by a large human foot. He about faces up the wall.

Millicent Snail
So I guess you can't go into a house after all!
A pile of snails from the back garden stare and laugh in unison, at poor William.

William the slug
I'll show them.
He slides into a window crack, sashays down the wall and heads straight to the water dish.

William sings
When a snail's not a snail it's a slug.

When a 'pillar's not a fly it's a bug.
If it wiggles far away there will surely come a day,
he'll get eaten by a mammal gone astray.
That's when a snail's not a snail - it's a slug!
