Draw Near to God

by BermyBye50

There is another me inside I see
Who prefers I not go to Heaven
Seeking only to send me to Hell,
His soul-destroying temptations
And unending changeless trials
Tells me he does not mean well.

This other me in not my friend
Nor does he ever intend to be
For his words are insidious lies,
Assuring but often questionable
I'd be well-advised not to believe
Set to convince me otherwise.

For he is my relentless accuser
Seeking to defile my conscience
As he wryly convinces me to sin,
Through prevarications and deceit
He works to lead my mind astray
But thro' faith I'll not let him win.

And while I may stumble and fall
Enduring his many trials and tests
I will everyday resist and draw near,
Always in prayer submitting myself
Before him as he draws near to me
For he has not given me a spirit of fear.

A poem inspired by the following verses:

James 4:6-7

God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:8-10

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners; and purify your hearts, double-minded ones. Be afflicted, and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness. Be humbled before the Lord, and He will lift you up.
