Black Pudding
A chapter in the book A Book of Songs
Marag Dhubh
(Verse 1)
Still in the night he stood alone,
besides the chill no fear,
his sgian dubh cuts to the bone;
he remembers the seer.
~.~
"Marag Dhubh, ingredients pure;
Fry: taste the island sure!"
~.~
Brahan's words now echoed Jock's dawn,
his chance; a young 21.
Braced he stood before Willie John's;
resident since 1931.
(Verse 2)
A strong power comes over Jock;
Marag Dhubh did glisten.
Seven o` clock the "light" talked,
Marag Dhubh position`s.
~.~
"One man with muscles strong, behold;
Stands aloof waiting bold!"
~.~
Jock enters pulling sgian dubh,
the power held his hand;
friend to Willie John's men, no rue;
Marag Dhubh talks with man.
(Verse 3)
The pudding black lies on its side,
Jock strong now felt unsure,
white or black what did Brahan describe;
he calls Marag to cure.
~.~
"Don't forget destiny of Gaels,
Friend or foe!" Marag wails.
~.~
Jock startled and white as a sheet,
the Brahan asked for black;
wrap it now or else it will peep,
easy, I see its tack.
(Verse 4)
A lesson learned for them all
we know who's the pudding.
Jock reels with laughter at his call;
Marag Dhubh's for cooking.
~.~
"Now taste for sure that Royal Fayre,
Swollen spice; secrets lair!"
~.~
Happy men are the puddings friend
over sea he travels;
serious men never take lend,
other men just lose their marbles.
Sgian Dubh: Covert Knife
Brahan: The Seer
Marag: Affectional name of the pudding
(I took a little poteic licence with the numbers in one stanza so take each whole number as one syllable)
