A chapter in the book A Book of Songs

The Barbers Refrain (Part 1)

by Bicpen

Did you know it started with bandages and blood?
In the day we were the first on hand,
Blood letting and cures were the aim of the brave few;
Our fame of skill travelled the land!
Sharp instruments for medical use work all day,
Tough gristle; a backbone sharp keeps calm!

Gentlemen what are you for?  You know what we do,
The red and white is our coat of arms!
Come gentlemen, sit fast, bad hair day don’t get caught;
Feel the scissor and comb’s healing balm!

“Take a seat sir, this one is for you!”  The day starts.
"Sit still!" The gown wraps; quick check all’s well.
“What would you like, a trim and shampoo?”  Steady on,
What would people think if it were teld.
“How about a special, maybe a semi perm!”
“Steady, try keeping dignity held!”

Gentlemen what are you for?  You know what we do,
The red and white is our coat of arms!
Come gentlemen, sit fast, bad hair day don’t get caught;
Feel the scissor and comb’s healing balm!

Up starts the ruminative teen, “Ah, do you pierce?”
“Strictly, men’s hair not severing screams!”
“What about tattoos and face painting like the picts?”
“Men and hair the rest is in your dreams!”
“I guess I’ll have a trim at number two or three,
It makes you look good to have a preen!”

Gentlemen what are you for?  You know what we do,
The red and white is our coat of arms!
Come gentlemen, sit fast, bad hair day don’t get caught;
Feel the scissor and comb’s healing balm!

Inspired by my many trips to the Barbers shop...and the symbol used to represent this tradition over here in Britain, a Red and White pole. It normally hangs outside the barbers door.

"Teld" an old Scots word for told...I think.
