As Fairies Circle Round the Fire
by adewpearl
As fairies circle round the fire to find the warmth within its flames, a puckish pixie plucks a lyre, bright music for their winter games. To find the warmth within its flames, sweet sprites prance round the brilliant blaze, and as they dance each voice proclaims glad praises to life's cold, crisp days. A puckish pixie plucks a lyre while elves cavort and brownies sing -- as flames and voices both rise higher, joy reigns within this fairy ring. Bright music for their winter games finds harmony in winds that blow, and so these celebrants acclaim this time of crystal ice and snow. |

My talented friend Mike, Fleedleflump, posted a retourne a couple of days ago. It is a repeating form I had not yet tried, and his lovely poem inspired me.
The retourne consists of four quatrains with 8 syllable lines. Rhyming is optional. The defining characteristic is that the second line of the first quatrain becomes the first line of the second verse, and the third line of the first quatrain becomes the first line of the third verse, until finally, the fourth line of the first quatrain functions as the first line of the fourth verse.
I chose fairies as the subject for two reasons - one, my daughter loves fairies, and two, Mike enjoys fairy poems, and since this one was inspired by him, I figured it should be pleasant to him :-) So, this is a shout out to Miranda and Mike. And if you can't see any fairies or elves in the picture, you just need to sprinkle it with a bit of fairy dust!! :-)
