A Villanelle

A Nest at Night

by damommy

The sparrow kissed each tiny head,
last check to make sure things were right,
the chicks safe in their mossy bed.

She gently sat, her feathers spread
as night took over evening light,
the sparrow kissed each tiny head.

All day, she worked to keep them fed,
while eager mouths await each bite,
the chicks safe in their mossy bed.

She stayed alert for danger’s tread,
but knew she must have rest tonight.
The sparrow kissed each tiny head.

She dreamed of times when fuzz was shed,
when she, a fledgling, first took flight,
the chicks safe in their mossy bed.

Now dawn has come, and sunbeams thread
their way into her nest so bright.
The sparrow kissed each tiny head,
the chicks safe in their mossy bed.

A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa.

The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).

One of the most famous Villanelle is "Do not go Gentle into that Good Night."
