Kym Jade: Dear Friends, At the beginning of 2009 I said to Jade, "I think this will be a wonderful year." As it turned out nothing could have been further from the truth. Early in February we received a phone call to tell us Mum had passed away suddenly and we were devastated. Frantic, we rang the bank and the car yard, we had been arranging to buy a new car from so we could visit family in New South Wales. Well, we purchased our car and took off down on a two day drive to be there in time for Mum's service. When we arrived we found poor Dad holding up but heartbroken. The next day hundreds of friends and family attended the service. Everything felt surreal as people filed past giving their condolences. I couldn't help thinking, 'None of this should be happening! We purchased the car to visit Mum and Dad, not for this.' It soon became obvious how much the town they had made home some twenty three years earlier had come to love and respect both Mum and Dad. A month later we returned to help Dad do some work on the little farm they had created. Over the years they had grown all their own vegetables and fruit. Any surplus fruit Dad would make into award winning wines for which he had won a wall full of ribbons and certificates; his Damson the best of them all. Sadly, we lost Dad too in June. After placing Mum's ashes at a local church on a rainy day he caught a chill and then pneumonia. We flew down to Canberra, went straight to the Hospital, and found him on life support. His poor heart had not been able to take the extra strain of the pneumonia and he passed away a couple of days later without ever regaining consciousness. We were crushed as while they had both been our guiding lights in life, Dad was our mentor, best friend and had a wonderful roguish sense of humour. Lost in a cloud of grief and shock we did our best to get on with our lives until I fell ill at the end of August. Due to the severe infection and inflammation I spent the whole of September fighting for my life. Thankfully, I am home now in Jade's care and doing my best to regain my health. My doctor tells us I should start to feel better in the New Year. In the meantime we are still trying to do our best to deal with our grief and the only thing I can be sure of is I will never utter anything about having a wonderful year again. Jade and I wish you all the best futures possible. We shall miss you all in our absence. Best wishes and dreams Kym |
