DR DIP: JUST a quick courtesy call to any friends I might have left out there in Fanstory land.
My membership subscription is due for renewal this month.
I have been coming to this wonderful site since may 2013 so i am a relative newcomer
It has brought many wonderful friendships over that time and i have enjoyed the banter and fun.
I have never taken myself that seriously with my simple rhyming poetry Its all been just a bit of fun to me.
There are truly some wonderful wordsmiths on this site and the diversity of styles and attitude to writing is definitely a wonderful attraction.
To those whom i might have offended on this site with my quirky Aussie sense of humour I sincerely apologize.
To those on the forum who have been offended by my stances on certain issues be it political or religious I again apologize (I seem to spend my life saying sorry) lol
There never seems to be enough hours in the day and at present my priorities lie in other avenues I am pursuing in my current time frame.
I just feel I cannot dedicate the hours or have the impetus to dedicate what I feel is a fair time on this site anymore.
If things change I do have premier shield so I know all is not lost and i assume when circumstances change I may come back but in the meantime life goes on in Dip's world lol

    You have such a unique voice and it is your infectious wonderful humor, the demonstration of such a generous kind heart and a beautiful mind which can give sunshine to even the rainiest if days.

    If I may, I am excited to hear if your venture into creating your own radio spot. Braveheart you are. It is so wonderful that you are giving voice to many a talented wordsmith which can change not only their lives but the lives of those they influence.

    I know you are retired and along your wonderful journey of life you have helped many people.

    As I stated before- you have been instrumental in finding my courage to share the guarded secrets which shadow my past. I will be writing a memoir book on my journey of healing from childhood trauma to being involved in extremely abusive relationships. I am going to reveal it all and I have you to thank for it.

DR DIP: I so remember once this was a writing site for poets and short story writers to share their works with those who share the passion of the written word be it in rhyming verse, non rhyming or prose plus fiction or non fiction short stories.
People made comments what they felt of each others work and would graciously say where they thought a work could be improved whetrher grammatically or poetically.
It was an enjoyavble place to visit.
Bu slowly poison tongue of political allegience and religion oozed its way into the site , especially catylized by the inauguration Of trump into the political equation
Everyone saw him as the breath of fresh air America needed.
No one bothered criticizing his track record as a bank rupt liar and charleton with a hidden agenda to better his own position in life and bring nepotism into the political occasion.
Suddenly people realized that the man liked to stretch the truth for his own benefit.
The people had the wool pulled over their collective eyes and started believing his stats of success in turning the economy and unemployment.
he does not mention the incereasing amount of homeless taking residence in the back streets and parks of California.
I so wish the economy was improving as a result of his policies.
To use the corona virus as a crutch for personal political gain is going to back fire and is outright disgusting.
The man continually is losing any respect or credibility one might have thought he had at the time of his inception.
Many now are disallusioned.
The corona virus is the great deterrent he needed to have and the more he ties to embrace optimism and light at the end of the tunnel the more he digs a deeper hole for himself then tries to justify his actions for the betterment of the people.
Next he will be stating this is the virus we had to have

DR DIP: IMMATURITY VERSUS WISDOM OF LIFE EXPERIENCES

Some people are quick to react to another's comment without completely understanding or reading it.
Knowledge pure through experiencing life itself as agains reading in textbooks and learning by rote does not necessarily denote a learned person.
AS much as I have the deepest respect for the younger generation I sometimes wish it was reciprocated.
Just because the older generation are not always computer literate or savvy does not mean they haven't experienced life before google and Wikapedia.
Just a little bit of respect for the knowledge that older folk may impart not learnt from any text book but merely experiencing life itself.

That's all I have to say on the matter
    Adelphos Vasa: It depends on how wise that generation was. There is a world of difference between knowledge and wisdom. I am afraid your generation didn't do such a good job of either, but led us down the path to sin and death and the loss. (1950's -60's gen) -
    CD Richards: Says the generation that thinks it's fun to shoot, snort or smoke substances that turn one into psychotic zombie who is a danger to anyone who crosses their path. The generation that can't communicate without using their thumbs, and even then not in anything vaguely resembling English. The generation that thinks the only thing their parents are good for is to hand them everything on a platter. The generation that doesn't understand the meaning of the word "gender".

    Oh, and yes, what I just did is called "profiling" - stereotyping everyone of some particular demographic - in this case age. It's also known as discrimination. Sucks, doesn't it?

    Maybe when people learn to look at their own lives instead of trying to make themselves feel superior by blaming others for their inadequacies, the human race will make some progress.

    The fact that some choose to see their God as one who delights in violence, death, destruction and punishment says nothing about their non-existent buddy, but everything about themselves. -

    I am getting sick and tired of not being able to voice an opinion if people want to state there's be ever who they are its all fine by me I won't be running off squealing to Tom because someone disagrees with me.
    i think debate and opinion are healthy no matter how diverse oropposing.
    I'll give Tom a day as usual and he'll remove it. He doesn't like confrontation when it doesn't suit him.
    The problem here is profile thoughts are also the same topic thread on the forum So depending on where you respond or post gives it a completely different acceptable category.

    And I thought politics and religion were the only issue lol.

    I really don't give a rats how long one has been on this site or how short a time everyone is entitled but for stuff sake if you are going to write something make sure of your facts and above all respect everyone elses whether they are old fogies like me that have experienced life before during and after cyber technology.
    I think my thoughts were well validated and I never pointed a finger I just made an observation.
    The only thing I suggest to the newbies is before you judge or take alliances you will regret sit back and take in.
    don't just come in half cocked then sidle up to someone just because they agree with you.
    study the history of the place You all have plenty of time now to do this and then maybe before you judge another you might have a better understanding on why some people's attitudes toward others are what they are.
    Get runs on the board first put ya i phone apps and uni text books away and experienced life out of the uni lecture room.
    And while I'm at it do not tar generations that aren't yours with the same brush as if we are responsible for all the wrongs in this current why gen world who think the world owes them a living
    sure we stuffed up and in hindsight might have done a lot of things different but don't come on here with all keyboard typing fingers blaxzing as if your generation is so stuffing pure.
    You were all born with a keyboard and i phone in your hand at birth and you know how to swipe whoopy do.
    I need to stop this rant now before Tom gets the shits and deletes this.

DR DIP: Well it finally happened.
After seven years of coming to this wonderful site and posting poems every night, I've finally written a poem/songparody that has only had one review of its two complimentary certificates.
I have a good inkling why lol.

The poem did not sit well with fifty percent of the Fanstory community obviously who are Trump supporters and the other fifty percent were too worried exposing their non allegiance or non support to those who support him.
Ah politics!.... the subject that can apparently sever friendships and cause angst on a poetry and writing site like no other haha.
Personally I thought it quite funny as a parody but each totheir own.
I suppose an apology by me as usual is required.

Those who DO review your work honestly - I never seem to come across it by the way - are the sort of people you want commenting anyway, not just those after $$. I think you're a hoot! DR DIP: Mum and Dad and little Johnny and sister, Susan were sitting down for the night's dinner.
Tonight's dinner was a big surprise for them...Mum was serving up venison which they had never seen of had before.

Puzzled, little Susan pipes up and says 'Dad? What sort of meat is this?" to which Dad proudly exclaimed " Ok Susie, I will give you a hint" "It's what your mother often calls me".
At this hint, little Johnny promptly interjects before Susan has her first bite and yells.... "DON'T EAT IT SUSAN, IT'S AN ARSEHOLE!"

(Moral: Be very careful what you call your husband in front of the kids ok dear)

DR DIP: I NOW HAVE 8 LIVES LEFT
2 days ago at was at my son's place after a massive thunderstorm passed through the area with winds up to 150 ks an hour and hail stones asbig as golf balls,
A big tree branch had landed on his roof and he asked me to come around to help him rid of it.
Little did we know it had smashed about ten roof tiles and 3 of the ridge cappings and with an impending other storm it was now vital we replace the existing broken tiles before it rained.
The roof tiles were heavily glazed terracotta in a french patten and had not been on the house long before h ebought it some 4 years ago
but he had some spares.
We had all but replaced thebroken tiles barabout three soI was confident we could replace them before it rained.
I had been warned these highly glazed tiles are very slippery when wet.
We were both about to find out!
Aaron was further down the roof and over toward the ladder below him when I first heard him scream I"MGOING I"M GOING!
I looked around to see Aaron sliding down the pitched roof which was now like walking on ice and straight over the edge It was a 12 foot drop to the concrete path below and he had nothing to grab onto as he lay on his stomach slipping down the roof like a toboggin and over the edge.
All but 10 seconds later half way between me yelling to Aaron are you ok I started sliding from the apex or ridge of the roof gaining speed on my stomach as I slid.
All I remember was me going over the edge collecting the side colourbond metal fence taking the brunt of the initial first fall off the roof with my groin doing thesplits on top of it then been spun around upside down into the fence before falling the other six foot onto the concrete below. Other than my manhood beennearly taken out I jumped up off the ground with just a few scratches
There is a moral here for everyone..never stay up on a tile roof when it starts to rain! I miraculously live to tell the story as does my son who only sustained a sprained ankle.

DR DIP: As of today I will be following the rating scales and their definitions more strenuously.
I willaccept a 4 star review quite openly and never question or gribble about receiving one.
A good review with 4 stars is a good review it does not mean it a bad write.
We continually hold the bench mark at 5 or more nomatter what just to keep the peace ..Its now the accepted minimum.
The thing is what is seen in one person's eyes as just a good poem or story can be seen in anothers as excellent or acceptable and that my friends is interpretation.
Its not a matter of being ruthless or purely reciprocating its purely how a write affects the individual
Style of writeby many of our wonderful wordsmiths is now so predictable I am surely many can recognize those styles without an author's signature.
Thedash forcashattitude will never change with many but with over 800 members and some 400 active its obvious that many if not promoted to dollar status will never be read other than the two complimentary reviews.
You can deny it all day but the place is becoming a clique club for the popular and unpopular.
If one is not seen to fan as many of those 800 as possible and go on the law of averages their work will be seen by these if promoted heavily there works could belost in the backwoods forever
I am greatly in favour for that reason in increasing the complimentary certificates to at least 4.
hey this is just my point of view many will argue why change something not broken butI sincerely believe it is a change for the better. When you 'surf' the fanstory membership you would besurprised just how many wonderful wordsmiths whose work for various reasons is unpromoted are out there.
It is sad to see so many poets, purely to get page 1 and 2 exposure, actually buying member cent pumps with 'real' cash topromote their work to these pages.
This is NOT a gripe, just an observation and suggestion after spending nearly seven years coming here and STILL finding many wonderful wordsmiths hidden in the FanStory backwoods I had not realized.If one goes to the trouble to explore these backwoods one would be pleasantly surprised.
Personally I just don't have the time to spend 12hours reviewing but I love thewonderfulfriendsI have met on this site and are conversely disappoointed and saddened to see many leave or become inactive, disallusioned by the 'system'

WRITE IN UPPER FONT, depends on your zeal

Beauty of word is in the eye of the beholder
Whats one's person trash can be a treasure to the older
Diversity certainly IS, the spice of life

The power of the word is abundantly clear

DR DIP: Hello fellow Fanstorians

Well it's been three and and a half months since I have posted anything on this wonderful site as I had decided to dedicate my time to two of my most enjoyable passions in my life at present: my surfing and my poetry, reading it live on stage.

The introduction of my attendance to 'open mike' nights some 10 months ago at an inner city hotel in my home city of Sydney, Australia saw my dream to do my own one man show of my life through poetry only increase.

A chance opportunity in early November to having access to a beautiful 130 seat theatre at my local school of arts, in my hometown of Cronulla, Australia was just too good to knock back so with 30 or so poems and a lot of enthusiasm, I put together my own one man show , "an Audience With Dip and Friends".

To say I was not overwhelmed by the response on the night and their wonderful enthusiastic reaction and critique of the show was just so heartwarming and encouraging.

It has given me the impetus to pursue this new love of live reciting, getting to say my poems how exactly I want them to be said and to a responsive and enthusiastic audience.

To this end, I would dearly love to thank fellow Fanstorian, Jimi Savell for graciously letting me use her as a sounding board to see which poems she felt worked.
It's always good to have another set of eyes and when those eyes belong to a wonderful wordsmith such as Jimi to honestly critique, suggest and appraise it really helps one's confidence.
I sincerely Thank you Jimi.

Now for the lesson learned.

At the end of 2009 I was invited to this social site called 'Facebook' which at the time I had never heard of, to look at friend's surfing photos where you could comment if you felt warranted one.
As a joke, for some reason, I started to comment in rhyme and from that day forward I discovered my passion to write rhyming verse.

From September 2009 with my first comment on Facebook, to my last comment/post where I was quite vigorously and enthusiastically promoting my one man show by posting the event privately to all my 900 friends and 2000 followers I had on my link page "DIPTALES POEMS FROM THE HEART" posted over 4860 poems on Facebook.
It was not until May 2013 when I first joined FanStory , some 4 years after joining Facebook did I start to title and save my poems to word doc and since ALL my poems were inspired by pictures/ images or quotes and comments on Facebook, all my original drafts were on Facebook.

For some reason, Facebook saw this 65 year old pensioner (me) with a passion to write poetry on this social networking site for the last 10 years, as some sort of hacker/ troll obviously flagged by their robotic security algorithm for enthusiastically and naively promoting my one off one man show innocently to my friends on 'private message' to make sure they were aware of this late confirmation that I had secured this one night only one man show.

They told me I had contravened their promotion and standards policy and My account had been permanently disabled..NO WARNING, NO "THREE STRIKES AND YOUR OUT" policy.... just a straight out, permanent disablement of my account.
No specific explanation other than to say refer to our promotions and standards conditions policy.

I can live with being suspended for a month or so because of my ignorance and naivety for not reading the small print but to permanently disable my account and totally denying me access to the 1500 or so untitled poems I had not yet saved to word doc that are exclusively mine is both unfair and unjust.

Like how many people when joining a social network site such as Facebook actually read their small print policy when activating their account on their standards and promotions policy..give me a break!

I AM NOT A BLOODY CRIMINAL!
I am just an enthusiastic rhymer with a passion to write and share my work.
That's ten years of my life just flushed down the sink in one foul security algorithm or whatever you want to call it.
Why can I not have the chance to plead my case and my innocence , be I naive and ignorant of this small print policy?

DR DIP: A wonderful FanStory writer and friend who always goes to the trouble to review my works over the years made the comment in a review to one of my posts that due to difficulties in typing any more she will only be reviewing those who have reviewed her work,

I call this'Reciprocal reviewing' and I totally understand her reasons that she will only be reviewing to conserve her writing strength as it deteriorates to those who make the effort to review here work.

Of late and I mean over the last two years especially, my time allocation to be able to dedicate with reviewing on this wonderful site has diminished greatly due to a few projects I now have going on in my life.
So I hardly review any more when coming here hence my very simple poems I write are only ever worth two cents so I totally understand there is no incentive whatsoever for anyone to review my work anyway and I totally understand this.

To that end, when other things in my life wind down, my time on Fanstory reviewing everyone who goes to the trouble still these days to review mine will lift.

So I will always understand if I am not reviewing in kind ( reciprocating) why would any one bother and especially if only worth 2 cents, to review me.

Lets face it Fanstory is a very time consuming place if you let it take over your life..and I know I have used this expression many times before over the wonderful 6 years I have been coming here but we are slaves to the system there is just no other way to say it.

To those who dedicate the time to spend reviewing hours on end and hold their great rankings kudos to you all for your dedication.

Never stop writing it is such and enjoyable and rewarding passion for many of us.

    Fanstory takes a lot of ones time. Writing is a passion for all of us here or we wouldn?t take or steal time from the important everyday aspects of attending our lives and post and share, if we did not love the written word and being creative. However, there are limits, and we do well to prioritize, so we don?t become consumed .

    For those who can review, write, respond everyday, I can certainly appreciate their whys, just as I can appreciate those who simply cannot whys.

    Now you go take on the day. And by the way, keep posting here and even in the forum. Your voice is just as important as anyone else?s my talented friend. -

    In my experience, if I mute somebody, or they mute me, it's most likely because I think they are a git, they believe me to be one, or most likely, there is mutual lack of admiration. Should it really bother us that such a person doesn't want our opinion?

    Someone of note once said:

DR DIP: ALWAYS find the the time to read poetry aloud and several times especially rhyming poetry.
It's amazing how easier it is to establish the beat and rhythm of a poem when you can hear your own voice.(no matter how cringe worthy you think your voice sounds)
It also irons out any meter and syllabic count imperfections if read how the author wants it to be read I feel.
Rhyming purists will probably disagree.
This is purely an observation not a command lol

DR DIP: Just a consensus: What is everyone's opinion of removing the forum topics of POLITICS and RELIGION completely off the site so there is no possible enticement for anyone to go to them. It just seems to provoke bad and unnecessary blood on a wonderful site.
Just my opinion but as Tom says, there is always the skip button one doesn't HAVE to visit these forum topics.

DR DIP: Well, If I have discovered anything in my life on this wonderful place called FanStory, it is to have a thick skin, a very insensitive ego, a sense of humour, patience and tolerance and above all the knowledge that everyone has the diversity of taste and opinion.
Always be yourself and never be backwards in saying what you think. Life is a blessing, bathe in its wonderment, embrace serendipity, be humble in praise and TRY to be accepting in critique be it ever so critical.
Like minded people tend to gravitate toward like minded people, but always keep your mind and attitude open to those so diverse or different from your own ethics,morals, ideals and beliefs.

Perhaps I made a mistake in joining what several people had told me was a pleasant community of writers to become associated with. I have never been on a writing site before and looked forward to sharing my writing with others. I was also looking for an enjoyable opportunity. But, if this is the way the members of this site are, and treat one another with this kind of disrespect, I am not sure I made the right decision in joining this site. Now, I am having serious second thoughts. -
    damommy: Ginny, this is a good place to be. The majority of members are very helpful, supportive, and respectful.     Brett Matthew West: Ginny, I well may be the one Dr. Dip is referring to as I am in the process of finalizing a book I have been writing for the last two years in which one of the characters is an assassin. If that be the case, I do believe I would not waste my time or breath expecting an apology from him. I would be rather sure one is not forthcoming. In any case, you appear to have a lot to offer FanStory. At least, you come across in that manner. As far as whether you stay or leave this site goes, that is of course your decision. However, as damommy said, this site does have more positive members than negative ones and I would encourage you to remain a member. -
    CD Richards: What I find interesting is that someone who, according to their own admission, hasn't been on the site long enough to know anyone, nevertheless feels confident to take someone to task over their comments. I presume you must know the backstory, or what events might have transpired to provoke Dip's comment. And yes, I am rather confident to take someone to task when I see something I do not like. As you appear to want to take me to simply because I was brazen enough as a brand new member to speak my mind. I did not like Dr. Dip's comment and said so. I have learned in life that usually, in a situation like this, it always takes two to tango. However, I did not come on this site to get into any altercations with anyone. Because of that, I am confidant your comment was directed at me and CD Richards remarks seemed to affirm that. The unfortunate truth is it would not have been the first one. I agree, in the best interest of peace, we should allow whatever bygones occurred between us to be forgotten. I also appreciate GinnieD for her honest comments even if she is a new member. Have to say she has spunk. I hope she will remain a member. Overall, FanStory does have a lot to offer even if we all do get aggravated with what transpires here sometimes. -

DR DIP: Today is the 17th anniversary of 9/11.
Let us all take the time to reflect on such a catastrophe
That one day indelibly marked in history a shocking
example of terrorism and took it to the worst peace time human atrocity
in modern history in the western world.
it changed the lives of every American and the free and democratic nation worldwide.
Nothing said or written could bring those people back. A few thousand Innocent office workers, 300 fireman and a myriad or heartbroken love ones.
The scene was surreal.
I remember driving home on afternoon shift After hearing of the first building being hit. By the time I had gone home and woke my wife we turned on the television to a second plane hitting the other trade centre of the twin towers.
Could not believe when they came down.
It still is so surreal when you watch that footage 17 years later.

This time you even suggested that I write a book called The Professional Victim etc. Tom Ens is well aware of the problems I have had on this site, including PDFs that don't download properly, many pieces missing, or posting too many times, etc. I have nothing to hide, and no hidden agenda, and he's tried to be helpful.

    My common-law husband of 28 years says I should just ignore you. I say that repeatedly harassing a 66 year old woman illustrates that there is obviously something wrong with you - there's something about ME that makes you keep coming back, even though I completely ignore you, and have done for months. It's not your business, so why else would you write the same thing over and over? (You're like a little boy in grade school pulling on a girl's pigtail.)

    Putting an "lol" with what you write doesn't make it any less insulting, or any less a personal attack (which is against site rules anyway). It just makes you appear pathetically weak. I'm not the first member to have told you so either - probably just the first WOMAN. B Mathews said exactly the same thing the last time you called me a "professional victim", and he's not even someone who is on my fan list of over 500.

DR DIP: I suppose the last few months has been a really good test on whether people read someone's poetry because they generally like it or because it has been heavily promoted and they only see the dollar value in reviewing.
I have not reviewed in recent months because I just physically haven't the time to dedicate that many hours to this wonderful site and feel fair about reviewing equally.
BUT, on saying this, on my fleeting visits these days, when I do have time to review I tend to reciprocate reviews to those that who still consistently review my humble writes be them only worth 2 cents to them and un promoted.
To those loyal fanstory friends I am forever grateful and when I get the time away from my current projects and resume to review I know who I will be reviewing first not only because I like their poetry and tend to gravitate toward reading and reviewing theirs but knowing they read ones work because they genuinely like it not because of chasing member dollars.

On saying this, let me say again, I really admire those that can find the HOURS to review and promote.... Kudos to you.

DR DIP: In the nearly 5 years of coming to Fanstory, I have and had met many amazing people/wordsmiths who I have actually become friends with outside of Fanstory. I suppose that's what it's all about hey, meeting people with a common passion.
To those loyal fanstory friends who still go to the trouble to review my un promoted work I am very grateful
I don't post so prolifically anymore but still like to call in and read my fanstory friends' writes.
Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to review at the moment but will endeavour to get back to reviewing in due course.

DR DIP: It's sad but I am getting tired. I am struggling with motivation.
I have made many great friends on Fanstory and read many great poems from many talented poets. I just can't keep up with reviewing any more and get so caught behind.
I feel like I am a slave to the system sometimes.
It is a great place to store and archive my poems.
If I miss reviewing you I apologise I just have to review reciprocal reviewers. I think I'll be winding down.
Seriously I cannot see the advantage in posting two poems per night any more.
I don't chase rankings and never have.
If anyone who likes my poetry for what it is I really haven't the time to promote them anymore. and I think it totally unfair that I expect people to review my simple rhyme if I cannot return the favour.
I have been here for four and half years now and have posted over 3700 poems in that time.
I have been forever grateful for your support over this period.
I'll just see how things pan out with other things in my life.
I don't think I have actually sat with my wife at night and simply watch telly with her. I've let Fanstory become an obsession I'm afraid I cannot stay up to all hours of the morning reviewing anymore. So if I post its purely to store my poems.

    Brett Matthew West: The problem with the last sentence, "So if I post its purely to store my poems" is that once something is posted it goes to whatever fans there are. The only way they can clear the posting off their account is to review it. What happens at that point is up to the writer as far as whether they reply to the review or not. The only known way around this situation is not to post at all. -

DR DIP: I really hate the expression 'fluff reviews".
The fact that someone has gone to the time and trouble to review one's work is great effort within itself.
We have over 400 plus supposedly active writers on FanStory so there are a lot of posts to read.
Sometimes small poems such as haiku and 2-4-2 and 4 line poems make it hard to reach the minimum words that are allowed as a review. Obviously there are many methods and techniques used by reviewers to reach that minimum allowable word count for short writes:
Repeating/ rewriting the verse in your comments
Summarizing the read with other words meaning the same thing
Embellishing with big metaphorical words
Explain to the author what poetic techniques have been used

There is only so much one can say on poems with 3 lines
no matter how hard one tries
Please don't be offended with reviews and reviewers that might use these techniques to 'fatten' or lengthen the review.
Everyone tries very hard to give credible reviews with all works but sometimes it is hard to reach the minimum allowable limit of text.

Have a great Christmas
    Dean Kuch: If you do a bit of research there's a LOT of things you can address where haiku and many other short forms are concerned.

    You can mention how well lines one and two grammatically connect.

    You can mention the syllabic count and how Japanese "onji" and English syllables are nothing alike.

    You can address the kigo, or seasonal reference, the satori, or that 'Ah-ha!' line of enlightenment (and what it meant to you), which usually comes in the last line.

    You can discuss similar spiritual experiences in nature you've had.
    You're a surfer, right? Surely you've had a few.

    So, I respectfully agree to disgreee with you, dipster. You simply do not care for the form and choose not to do your research.
    That's fine, not everyone enjoys or understands haiku.
    Just, please, don't try to sugar coat your dislike. Phyllis Stewart certainly doesn't,
    We who write haiku can take it, heh-heh.

    DR DIP: ooh I hit a nerve Dean and maybe I shouldn't have used haiku as an example and just stuck to other 3 line and one line poems.

    I haven't a dislike for haiku at all on the contrary I find some quite skilful as I had become more accustomed to the form
    Admittedly I am not a big fan of it on the whole just like I'm not a big fan of several other forms of poetry and yes if one has a format of tick boxes for reviewing haiku you can fill the space.
    My point was, sometimes it's hard to write a review of a very short poem to fill the minimum word requirement that was my whole point of the post.
    As for the topic of fluff reviews I was trying to reason why some may appear like that.
    I am sure you have been in a position where you were struggling to fill the required comment word count lets be honest.
    There is no need to go all defensive about the fact I mentioned haiku and yes I would admit I haven't studied the form and admit I am ignorant of the reviewing points you brought up I am sure you will not be the only one who disagrees with me about reviewing short works that is a given and I totally accept that

    Asem.inspirations: Yes, I believe you are all right. DIP, I do agree with you though. It does take a lot of effort to write some of these reviews. Sometimes I review for seven hours a night but it's not always easy to find something to say about some of the poetry. We must use 150 characters for each review and sometimes I find myself at a loss for words. I do believe also that we should avoid being rude. I also believe that we should stay polite and helpful.

    I usually try to find something in the post that I could relate to and then I go from there. If I cannot find something nice to say or if I can not say enough, then I just skip the post completely and move on to the next.

    When I encounter a rude reviewer or one who wants to argue, I may respond or I may not but either way I will not review their work anymore and I ask them nicely "Please do not review my work." Some of the reviews do feel like an attack and it's hard to ignore that kind of (excuse me but yes I will call it) abuse. -


DR DIP: Just to clarify when reviewing. As we are all aware there are some pretty sensitive egos on this site who don't take too kindly to unfavourable comment or suggestion about their work no matter how valid your point may be and promptly want to mute you.
Let's clarify again and I am not being condescending. Some rhyming words in different countries phonetically work depending on pronunciation and accent.
I think we all must accept this fact and appreciate different rhyming words that totally don't phonetically rhyme in another country.

    rama devi: I know some people think I cut and paste replies, but I actually type them out fresh each time - and mean each word each time, too. Some of use just have ways of expressing our thanks that resonate with us. Some do cut and paste, true...but on occasion there are decent reasons for doing so (health issues, or time issue - for example, if someone is a caretaking for the sick or elderly and cannot spare extra time and energy. Just some thoughts on the matter... :) -

DR DIP: I don't want to flog a dead horse and I have heard all the arguments against doing this but I am going to say it again.
On a site that has over a thousand members and 435 of them being supposedly active members.
Surely in a week of reviewing there is in one's eyes, more than 6 exceptional poems.
Yeah I have heard the argument you have to be more picky with who you award your 6's to. But personally I read more than 6 exceptional poems in a week and feel guilty later in the scoring week where I cannot award a justifiable 6 and this happens consistently every week.
The argument is do those given a six deserve it.?
You have to ask the question what is your benchmark for
an'exceptional' rating in one's eyes. The vast majority of fanstorians are purely fun loving amateurs with a passion to write they are not seasoned professionals so in this light, giving a 6 star rating in the broad context of what fanstory is all about
is not overly exorbitant.
Just my opinion..what's yours?
    mrsmajor: The question becomes what works are worthy of the 6 stars...and what bothers me most is this: if a poem meets the requirements, according to the site standard shown, and more!! with meaningful thoughts, messages, and I am totally impressed with all of that...why must I be limited to just the 6 in a week if more than that number deserves such a rating....Franky, I think its a insult to the writers to have some beautiful work ignored simply because one is not allowed to rate Exceptional as often as they wish...there are some writers that use difficult forms, and do so well, with messages, themes, that are so appropriate for this day and age...and to rate 5 stars is just not enough...

    I don't know the answer, but I do feel that there is enough work presented here that does deserve the top rating, in my estimation, and who is to tell me it is not...whose opinion counts, and whose doesn't...is mine as meaningful as some others, who decides that. -
    Dean Kuch: Allow the top 25 reviewers to have ten stars
    Allow 26-50 to have seven
    Everyone else remains at six, as is.
    This not only creates incentive to be a more active reviewer, it also alleviates the lack of a sufficient amount of sixes for the top 50 reviewers.

    Many reviewers NEVER reach the top reviewers place. So to allow them those extra stars will just keep them there since no one else will be able to attain that level over them. I know I have written decent reviews & NEVER receive many nominations--which is ok. But I see your idea as a way to keep only those already there in place with no chance of others reaching that level. Also some reviewers review for quantity rather than quality. So how would your idea stop that?
    But I do agree that more than 6 stars per reviewer is needed. -

    michaelcahill: EVERYONE agrees, Dip. Convincing Tom is the rub. I think the drawback is that some of us don't review as much as others. So you end up having folks who review six poems a week, all sixes. If we had ten, then they'd review ten, all sixes.

    The best idea I've heard of was Brooke Baldwin's ... award sixes based on the number of reviews. The more you review the more sixes you get. Of course, that might cause a bunch of lame reviews. But nothings perfect, we already have people doing that to rack up fake money.

    The ratings system needs an overall because it has become a source of paranoia

    I love this site but it sucks you in and consumes you whole. There's not enough hours in the day without sacrificing other interests. -

    giraffmang: Not everyone agrees. I disagree. Until the system is used properly, the change would be pointless. I've seen a lot of sixes given out for poorly formatted, badly punctuated pieces, full of spags and not meeting contest requirements. there is no quality control and people see things differently. there will always be a glut of people rewarding each other. If an accumulation thing, it means more rewards for more reviews and that will generally mean it based on volume, not quality which short of defies the purpose of being given more six stars to play around with.

    Also, where do you draw the line 10, 20, more. The issue will still be the same and the chance to manipulate things even more prevalent.

There's too diverse a group and there will always be people like you describe whether we are a large group or small. I know where to go for REAL advice or help and any serious writer here can find out quick enough. That aside, I like to be able to reward excellence even if it means others might at the same time honour mediocrity ... they already do, as you point out. :)) -

The crap ones quite simply don't because most are too polite to give constructive crit. I'm with G-Man...use the current system properly and don't give out your darn sixes so quick dipster.

    Dean Kuch: The stickler here, at least according to Gareth, is that sixes are awarded too nonchalantly for sub-par work. Is that about the gist of your argument, Gareth?

    So, if that were in fact true, it would do no good for those who review more to have more.
    Here's my proposal.
    Allow the sixes we retain at the end of the week to be rolled over into the following week. That might encourage less sixes being awarded.
    In other words if someone only awards four sixes on any given week the two they have remaining will be added to their total for the following week. They would then have eight available.
    If they use just five of those eight, the remaining three will be rolled over and they'll have nine ... and so on.

    As it is now if we don't use them we lose them.

I have been asked several times why I post so much. I have no agenda or reason other than I love to write everyday and I just love to share my thoughts and feelings whether it be about love and romance or my love of my hometown, the ocean or family.

    nor84: for years, a five-star review was as high as you could go.. It meant the work was publishable. Now it has become a habit to give everyone five stars and they have come to mean nothing. Six stars are supposed to mean really exceptional work, and therefore they are given to only a few.     There are some wonderful talented poets on this site who don't get the recognition they deserve whose ranking for what rankings are worth is way down.
    Personally I like to read a poets work because I like it not if it is just because it might have been promoted to dollar value. Funnily dollar value is the last thing I see or look at its the poem itself whether it be a dollar or 2 cents.

    rosehill (Wendy): I am a devoted fan, yet running my own business interferes with my writing and reviewing on an "on demand" basis. I always clear my box of reviews, it just might be a week or so before I can get to them. Be patient with your stalkers and those you stalk because life often gets in the way of our love of words. -


DR DIP: You know I always try to make the effort to review everyone of those I have fanned every time they put up a new post, and I am notified of this on my messages like everyone who has fanned someone does as well.
I don't think it's too hard to once in a while to review and I don't mean every time because if one posts so prolifically it IS asking a bit much to review every one I totally understand
But on saying that those who have reciprocated and fanned me would get my notification of a new post..I would really think it fair that just once or twice they may go to the effort to review one's work in kind I don't think that too much to ask.
To that end I sincerely appreciate the support and friendship of those who consistently review my humble writes even though a lot are only 2 cent poems they still go to the trouble. You all know who you are.They don't see it as a chore we just genuinely like each other's poetry..that is why one fans each other I thought in the first place.

DR DIP: In Two months time I would have been coming to FanStory for 4 years. I have learnt so much in this time from many wonderful poets who have guided, suggested, and advised me with my humble rhymes. To that I am forever grateful.
I have always written from the heart in simple verse.
Rhyming verse is not "everyone's cup of tea" but that is the beauty of this site...The diversity of taste and interpretation of poetry. I would be a boring old place if we all wrote the same way. That's the beauty of different styles. There is poetry here that caters for everyone's taste, be it love and romance political, religious philosophical, nature, humour poems and many other topics to write about.
So to those who enjoy my humble writes I deeply appreciate your loyalty to follow and review and I try hard to reciprocate.

DR DIP: Isn't it funny. I have been posting here everyday, 2 poems a day since coming to Fanstory back in May 2013.
In all that time I have never promoted my work more than two pumps past pot of gold.
Last week for the first time, I made no 1 on the front page with 73 reviews! Yes I was pretty chuffed considering I never promoted this review past 37 cents! lol
I average 10 reviews a night if I'm lucky, usually promoting one of my poems with pot of gold status.
For some strange reason this was taken up by the members and they ran with it
To that I am forever grateful.

I have now ticked my fanstory bucket list. I am a happy poet

DR DIP: I really enjoy reading the diversity of opinion each member puts forward on many Fanstory subjects and the diverse responses.
I really think this is healthy to have varying opinions on a site that caters for so many different styles and egos in both poetry and writing.
It's great that we take the time (when available) to review each other's work.
I think it is healthy that we all have varying tastes and opinions,
"what's one person's trash is another's treasure" so to speak.
Always remember to stay true to yourself and what feels right in your heart..stay true to yourself and just accept these diversities of positive and negative reviews.
Fanstory is a great site to boost one's ego and self esteem in one review or shatter that ego and self esteem in another review.
That is the beauty of this site...diversity of taste and interpretation, what is one's goals and aspirations compared to others.
In the nearly 4 years of coming to Fanstory I have experienced many wonderful emotions and conversely disappointments, but it is all a learning curve. You never stop learning and developing and to that I am forever grateful.

DR DIP: I really try and make the effort to review everyone I have fanned sometimes I am remiss but i really do try and I thank everyone who reciprocates for I thought that is what its all about reviewing and commenting on each others work thats why you fan each other so they are aware when either has posted something new. To some its one sided and they never review your work Oh well each to their own I suppose

    Also, so many of us have health issues (as I do) and there are days we simply don't feel well enough.

In an unprecented Move Tommy boy has decided to abolish the star system and rankings and just let everyone enjoy each others poetry.
When asked "well it's only a trial period" tom said Just want to see if it actually affects the popularity of Fanstory and negates squabbling and pressure to perform.
"I want to see if everyone can just enjoy each others poetry without that pressure to promote it.
"Look I have made enough money from fanstory to retire " he added.

DR DIP: Do you know what this whole fiasco with this one reviewer has done?
it has brought to the surface the whole farce of the ratings system. Now lets be honest.
the whole ratings system 1 to 6 described from poor, needs improvement, good, excellent, exceptional. The words describing each star rating can give a misinterpretation.

Lets face it the bench mark has been set now virtually the only stars that are used are 5 and 6 as everyone is paranoid to give as low as a good rating which is still great but carries a certain inadequate stigma with it.
lets face it we are all amateurs here following a passion and everyone wants to please and encourage .
So how do we define excellent and exceptional poetry
its so personal in taste and individual interpretation but for want of not hurting someones feelings we tend to give 5 stars
This benchmark has been well and truly set now.
How many people will not review a poem below the value of say 50 cents?
Those two cent poems whether they are exceptional or not can be overlooked for the sake of member cent pumps to make that pot of gold or treasure chest
It's sad really because I have reviewed many 2 cent poems that are exceptionally good but can be overlooked by many because of this reason.
this is the main reason why i am a staunch advocate for having more than 2 complimentary reviews each posting

I can accept the one star ratings but his reasons that this is not poetry but propaganda is that far off rhe mark and disrespectful I feel what do you guys feel. I was quite taken aback actually. And nothing usually phases me.

This is not poetry; it is propaganda. I wish people could see the difference. It is not poetry's job to tell us how to behave or to fix us or dictate how we should act. That is the province of politics or religion, not of poetry! It is all well and good to treat people as equals, and I say hurray to that, but I do not say hurray to a poem that tells me what I should do.     I do not see this poem as propaganda, in fact the complete opposite. You have not singled out any one individual on colour, creed or gender, and I see no suggestion on your part on how other people should feel. You have merely expressed your own wishes on how you would prefer to see the world.
    Perhaps this person has a guilty conscience. As for the suggestion on when someone has earned the right to view, I think you have hit the nail on the head. I was on her for a few weeks before I started to review. You need to understand what is required in reviewing before attempting to do so. Please don't let this person put you off.

DR DIP: Can I suggest one thing that would would give some of the new members more credibility in their reviewing?
I think a premier member must have posted at least 5 of his own poems on his profile to be assessed and reviewed before allowing them the privilege of reviewing others.
The reason I say this is I find a lot of the new members who give rather scathing unsubstantiated reviews with very low ratings tend to have 'no runs on the board" ie have no postings at all which in my eyes gives them no credibility to review with any valid reasoning.
This is just an observation i have noticed over the three and a half years I have been coming to Fanstory and I am sure many fellow fanstorians have experienced this.
Don't get me wrong, I embrace and welcome new members but feel in the context of credibility of reviewing, runs on the board" is essential.
I don't think 5 poems or posts is too much to ask before they can review

DR DIP: Ok, please don't take this as a whinge because I genuinely love this site.
I review or try to review everyone that comes up on my message page as "new writing on line"..whether its worth 2 cents (which is quite disgusting) to the dollar entries who have obviously spent many hours reviewing others works to get the member cent pumps to promote it.
It costs 6.55 dollars to promote your work to "treasure chest" status which gives you 2 whole days on the welcome pages.

To review enough to make the face page and all time best status you would have to review on average 20 to 25 poems a day .
And I commend those that have the time to review so many and even more to get the 2 complimentary poems to the face page.

I read many beautiful poems by these "Dollar plus" poets who have gone to the trouble to review so much.
I greatly admire those poets who have made their way to top rankings on Fanstory purely through long and laborious reviewing To attain the member cent pumps.

Personally I try to review as many as time allows me but sometimes I have to sleep.
I can see how Fanstory can take over one's life, you become a slave to the system so to speak.
Obviously to save time and to have enough words in a comment to allow the comment to be accepted and the time frames one has when they have to answer 70 to 90 reviews every time they post it must be very hard to individually answer every reviewer who has gone to the trouble to review you.
Cut and paste replies becomes quite evident and I find this rather impersonal. But be that as it may i admire those who do get that many reviews.
But when our no 1 poet at the moment can spend the time and personally give responses to every reviewer who has gone to the trouble to review them it reflects on the cut and pasters.

As I said at the start, this is not a gripe but merely an observation.
What probably started out as a sight for passionate poets and was supported with a nominal fee has become a lucrative business and good on fanstory administration for making it so. Just not too impressed that every time you open the site you are plastered with advertisement more and more and its not that cheap considering the page reaches a specific audience of writers and poets so unless you open fanstory you would never see the add anyway..just curious

    I do agree, FS becomes so ingrained you start ditching everything else for it...no fair. You have to come up for air and when you are sucked dry with the reviewing and promotion system, you feel like you are in a continual vortex. I found a small hiatus helped me become guilt free. I can only devote the amount of time I have spare which at the moment is 4/5's of F**all. With that said, I have a poetry venture so I'm at least being productive and trying to MAKE some money out of it now. There IS a limit. We all just have to work out where we fit here and quit dumping on people because they don't review you. People that promote at the top all the time have to be prepared to get the fluff reviews as at times that's what they are attracting. If there was a slightly fairer system or maybe a HALF PRICE certificate. Did ya hear that Tom? Tom?!

    Anyway I say, give FS the level of committment it honestly deserves in your eyes and you'll benefit more and suffer less. They rely on the guilt trip here. Well I was guilty as charged for awhile and then broke free of the shackles and by God it feels good. Good luck with whatever you do but a GREAT vent. Wish I could review it haha... -

    I am Cat: Dip,
    When I do it, I record my voice on my iphone, (in the app called "Voice Memos" that comes on every iphone), email it to myself, put it in iTunes, and convert it to an mp3 file. Once that is done, it's a matter of posting as you always do, but go to Show Advanced Options, and choose, "reading", (click 'select', and browse your computer for the file, then upload)
    It's that easy. The size of your reading MUST be smaller than 3 mb.--choose low quality when saving, if necessary--

    Jannypan (Jan) : They pay major $$$$ to be in the top 10 Featured poems in the first group. The well received poems come from the positive reviews the work receives in a specified time [5s or 6s] This is my understanding. Those with a large fan base will probably have so many reviews in a short time. Those without seldom get to the well received listing. You have to put some kind of certificate on your work when first posting or you get only 2 free ones. Where that work goes after that, I have no clue. Good question. -
    michaelcahill: You can always view any work, but if it isn't promoted you have to go find it in someone's profile.
    To be well received it has to be in the first twenty-four hours I believe and it's only promoted pieces with eight reviews for poems or five reviews for prose minimum. It's the top ten percentage wise for the day, most sixes by percentage.
    If your piece is promoted, it's on the list when you click "read" that keeps repeating over and over. Yours stays on the list until the promotion runs out.
    Anything not promoted is just sitting in your portfolio. I've gone to peoples profile and reviewed things out of people's portfolios before, so it does happen. :)) -
    giraffmang: Never use your own money. I don't. I earn all the funny money on site to promote mine. My wallet stays intact... in my wife's handbag I think!

    Having a fan base helps as does promotion but it will stay on the circuit for 2 - 5 days depending on what base certificate is used. the problem is that not many people circle the lower rewarded pieces unless strapped for funny money. -
    kiwisteveh: I have (in theory) a couple of hundred fans, but only about 10 - 15 of those regularly review my work.

    The only way to get lots of reviews is to promote. You get to choose whether that is worth real money to you or whether to review like cray or try to win contests.

    I have never spent a cent of my own on promoting, but know I can make it to the front page if I really want to. -
    Mary Wakeford: When I receive a review from someone, I go to their profile and choose one of their works and give it a review, even if it's a two center. I think it helps to get your name out there and people appreciate the sentiment. On the other hand, I have reviewed several times one writer, and never get a single review from them in kind. So I eventually stop reviewing them. It's a two way street and a little goes a long way. I was told when I first joined by a high ranked author they would not review my work unless it was promoted to at least 60 cents...but I've promoted over a dollar and sometimes it doesn't help. I don't know what to tell you. -


DR DIP: We have a new member who is obviously super anal about the use of the English language. I won't say her name but for those who have experienced her insightful and thorough comments with average and poor star ratings on nearly ALL her reviews you will easily guess who I am talking about. The thing is she has no runs on the board bar one rather lame short story but I am too polite to rubbish as I fear she is lost in her own self importance. So this may sound harsh? Well I suppose it is, I just get pissed off when a reviewer hasn't posted any of her own works other than one to critique. Just my thoughts

    nor84: The only alternative I know of would be to review enough to buy a $10 certificate, then purchase member cent pumps with real cash. I don't recommend that, because there's no advantage. Another way might be to purchase and use a Lock and Key Certificate (see certificates in your "My" list) and invite people to a lock and key. There's also the Seal of Quality committee, which will give feedback. Neither lock and key nor Seal of Quality require you to promote, or at least not as I recall. -

    nor84: If someone becomes your fan, they are notified every time you post. It has nothing to do with the two complimentary reviews. Also, anyone on the site has the ability to check your portfolio at any time and review your work.

    However, many of the best reviewers would hesitate to critique for two cents, because reviewing is how they earn member money to promote their own work. In the half-hour it may take to review a piece for two cents, they could be reviewing several other posts. -
    DR DIP: Takes me 3 mins to review someone nor84.
    They might be able to see your work but they can't comment if there has already been two comments about your specific post.

    The money bit means diddly shit and if they are so hell bent on only reviewing works with dollar value well they aren't true fans.

    Sorry nor, just my opinion, not everyone has the time to sit and review for hours just to get their work ranked higher up the brownie point piss in your pocket tree.

    The true poets are the ones who review and comment because they like your work not that its worth a dollar.

    Personally, the whole clique club ratings "favourites" game is a joke, like why bother having a star ratings system from 1 to 6 if everyone gets an excellent like where can one go but down if the bench mark is set that high? do you see what I am saying with the greatest respect.

    I have said this many times if Fan story is purely based on them making money from people buying member pump dollars to promote their own work I would rather have a higher yearly subscription fee knowing that anyone at any time regardless of these 2 complimentary certificates can review

    Look, I love this site and I love my fellow poets and the diversity of styles my agenda might be totally different to everyone else's that come here I don't need my ego stroked as a poet because i don't rate my poetry at all compared to the many wonderful wordsmiths on this site.

    If people like my posts its purely because they genuinely like them hence I only get on average 4 to 5 reviews each post and I post 2 every night for the last 2 and a half years I have been coming to this wonderful site.

    That's over 1500 poems posted and they might not be everyone's 'cup of tea' but its my style and my passion to write in 4 line rhyme pattern.

    Sure, I can write non rhyming prose all day with beautiful metaphoric flowery words in a sonnet with perfect syllabic count and Iambic techno meter or whatever but it just doesn't interest me and I admire the poets on this site that choose to write in this style.

    Sadly, I am a rhyming tragic and always will be

    nor84: I'm not a poet, at least not usually, although I have won poetry contests. To review prose, it does take 20 to 30 minutes. To review a short poem, much less.

    If you review others, they will often return the favor. Reviewing the items on the home page pays best, and reviewing newly-posted work in "Up Next" pays about 50 member cents, with a chance of winning a member cent pump. Nobody has to spend real coin of the realm to participate. Most of us get our member dollars from reviewing and/or entering contests. If you see someone's work that you like, become their fan. they may reciprocate, and review all your work as it comes into their inbox. -
    mvbrooks: They do have this option by becoming a fan--then they get an email every time you post and a link to what you have posted. When you get a review you like, consider asking them to be a fan. -


DR DIP: Seriously if you are going to review someone's work and give a 2 star rating(needs improvement) please have the courtesy of suggesting how this can be done.

When you post your work, there's a place where you're asked if you want to accept nonwriter reviews, or some such wording. The default is to accept them. Many of us just say "no", but you need to check that section every time because sometimes it switches back to the default. -
    Linda Engel: agree 100% they should not review unless are members and have posted at lease two or three themselves. You do not deserve a 2 on anything -

DR DIP: do you know what REALLY pisses me off? when you get someone review you and give you a one star rating and when you go visit their work to see what a perfect poet writes..alas! they have not posted anything on fanstory

go figure in the 18 months of coming to this wonderful site I have never been given a one star rating actually I am somewhat bemused and embarrassed that someone feels that a post is only worth one star.

Just to piss them off I am going to promote this piece of shit in their eyes the poem is called "No words required" so I would be really interested to see if you feel that it warrants a one star rating which at the end of the day means diddly shit in the scheme of things.
I don't promote my work that often but on principal alone I am going to sit here tonight and promote the shit out of this one poem just piss this reviewer off I am somewhat disgusted. Normally I wouldn't give 2 fks but this has me riled because I feel it isn't too bad a poem and I refuse to have a poor on my portfolio

When you write a post there is an option of not letting standards review what you write, you should take advantage of that option... -

DR DIP: My anti virus protection has just blocked a POP UP from Fanstory .com

I have just spent hundreds of dollars and a lot of grief having my computer completely cleaned out costing me a lot of wasted time.

There are a lot of questions to be answered here I'm afraid because I had taken my issues directly to Tom several weeks ago when I could not upload any accompanying photos.

I am a trusting man, I love this site. I love the interaction and contribution from amazing wordsmiths out there.

What I don't like is the bullshit given to me when I asked the question that you were sending pop ups and adverts via fanstory after I pay a subscription each year to protect me from this shit.

I am not the first to complain about this.
I took it on the chin and assumed the problem was my end but I am continually getting pop up ads every time I post a poem with "keywords" highlighted in a different colour that send me a link to an add .

If I am denied access to this site after this you'll know why

I am a truthful and fair person I am very patient. but I have come to the end of my tether.

Sorry if my rant upsets some of the "clique club" but enough is enough.

A simple apology would be a good way to start.. because the grief has affected me to the point that I am finding it hard to enjoy the site whilst these pop ups continually come up. I have had computer nerds check out my machine and my programmes and everything is sweet my end my anti virus is just doing its job

    gypsycaravan: I have this problem on every site now on my iMac but not on my MacAir so it is definitely something on the computer, not the FS site. It is some new viral adware I'm told by Apple that doesn't show up or get cleaned up by most anti-virus programs. -
    nor84: I have two programs I swear by: Adguard, which stops popups (a lot of them are from Google) and Malwarebytes, which cleans out things that slip by Norton Antivirus. I heartily recommend both. Check them out online. -

with the greatest respect to this wonderful site and to the benefit of those members who aren't in the clique club. I would dearly love to see ones work be available for more than just 2 complimentary reviews.

Everyone has a different agenda and motivation for coming here...mine seems to be slightly different than many.

Personally, I do not profess to be a wordsmith by any stretch of the imagination but more a humble rhymer with a passion to write in verse be it poetic warts and all.

There are so many amazing wordsmiths on this site that inspire me so and without naming, for fear of favouritism of omitting someone for being remiss I think everyone has their favourites and sadly those favourites, through no fault of their own other than time constraints, do not have the luxury to review 24 hours a day to gain the required review dollars to promote their work.

In my eyes, it sort of reminds me of the aeroplane club, whereby everyone reviews those $1.20 poets because it only takes 6 reviews on average to attain another review dollars to at least promote ONE of your works for 24 hrs at least giving others a chance to physically comment on your work.

You see, I really don't give a rats about the star system because personally it breeds haters and jealousy amongst fellow poets who simply want egos stroked.

like lets be serious here we have a star system from one to six stars yet no one uses the full range without fear of getting muted for honest opinion.

the problem is when people give 5 AND 6'S EVERY TIME, THE BENCH MARK IS SET THAT HIGH that there is physically no where else to go but down.

it really just promotes everyone to just 'piss in each others pockets' so to speak.

I am a firm believer in pissing off the 'certificate expired' and make it unlimited reviews over a 24 hour period.
I am seriously willing to pay tommy boy and his cohorts, 100 dollars subscription per year (that's 2 meals at the local bistro) for this 'luxury of having no 'certificate expired' and unlimited reviews for 24 hrs the extra subscription money is the money for loss of revenue to the 'pilot' of the fanstory aeroplane club and I think is duly compensated.

I for one, hate the 'certificate expired' message, it shits me to tears and if I sound like a pompous little aussie whinger be it because I hardly ever whinge except of course for the 2 week fiasco where one could not upload pictures with their poem but surprise surprise could all of a sudden havethis reinstated with the new format costing one heaps of grief changing windows versions and removing programmes.

Ok about the new format. Personally I don't think it's far from user friendly.
There are still many glitches to solve, but the fact I can upload pictures again makes me tolerate those glitches.

DR DIP: So Fanstory has the new format going and now all of a sudden I can upload pictures after telling me for a week the problem is my end.
I will be revisiting my previous posts and addiding the image that inspired the poem .
So if any one is remotely interested they can revisit and if Fan Story in any way had a conscience they would allow anyone to review these again with the relevant photos being gradually attached without this CERTIFICATE EXPIRED MESSAGE COMING UP..that is the least they can do to comopensate for the grief they have put me through over the last week or two saying the problem is my end and spending hours removing programmes, running special virus scans, To those people who so thanklessly make the effort to visit my 2 cent poems I am forever grateful.

DR DIP: IS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIECING PROBLEMS WITH DOWNLOADING IMAGES ACCOMPANYING YOUR POSTS? I have a prompt that comes up when I try to add a picture from my computer files that says 'PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED" it is very frustrating

    I am a total techno twit, so I do have plenty of experience with that message. Check to make sure that it is a .jpg not .jpeg. That usually gums up the works. Also, if it has too much pixel size it will be rejected. So, try downsizing or alphabet check and I'm sure you can get things up and working. -

    DR DIP: angela with respect.. it was nothing to do with the image as I never got a chance to SELECT an image when I hit the prompt on edit mode to download image from computer on my picture file it just says PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED..I have been going to the same file page on my computer with this image since coming to fanstory so why would it suddenly change..I am not the only one experiencing this problem

DR DIP: Can someone tell me how someone can physically get the time to review enough fellow poets to earn enough review dollars that allows you to be in the top 12 front page consistently with sometimes even two poems and be there for a few days? is there enough hours in the day or review dollars available to be earnt to make this possible?

In addition, the people here become just as close a friend to you as any other -- much like yourself, Dip -- and you enjoy your interactions with them on a daily basis. Those are the reasons that I do it, personally. -


DR DIP: Tonight was my 1003 rd poem submitted since joining Fanstory in May 2013.

I only discovered the passion to write poems 4 years ago before then I had never picked up a poetic pen in anger.

Although I write in simple rhyme, they are ALWAYS written from the heart on many varied subjects.

My passion to write only gets stronger and I just want to thank you guys and gals out there in Fanstory land for supporting me and my humble rhymes and its only your support and encouragement that gives me the impetus to write many more it certainly is a passion.

To those wonderful poets out there who have so thanklessly and gracefully reviewed my work I sincerely thank you.

To those who felt my reviews "abrasive" or unfair I again sincerely apologise for my honesty

I know rhyming verse does not appeal to everyone and I fully appreciate this and conversely various forms of poetry do not appeal to me but I will always admire the skills and "wordsmithmanship" of my fellow Fanstorians.

May our friendships here continue for many more years to come and those friendships forged outside of this site as a result of this site, last forever

    mrsmajor: I have not muted you, but I have muted others, and most times it was not for the specific review comments on my post...In my experience I have found that some reviewers add to their review of a piece some unnecessary personal comments, sometimes unpleasant, thought to be cute, or funny.....I'm not saying that about you, as I can only speak for myself...
    To me it was best simply to mute the reviewer, rather than have a written discourse....reviews are important to me
    and I look forward to them as regards the
    work I have posted...I have been on this site for 10 years, (10/04) and the help I have received to make me a better writer, has been tremendous, and much appreciated...I don't believe some realize when they are being harsh, or unkind....we must remember we are all people, some more sensitive then others...

if this is the case to the two people who have decidedc to do this have the gumption and conviction to tell me why and not hide behind this little facade of prohibition. that is just so weak.

    IndianaIrish: Before you get too pissed, the member may have left the site, been suspended for doing something against the rules, or been removed from the site by Tom. Or they muted you. You can PM someone to ask them to see if their profile opens up for them. If yes, then you can be pissed. -

Tom removed someone who was really evil to me. Really nasty. Someone else muted me and I don't even know who it is. I am proud to be muted. My kids would love to mute me. -

DR DIP: Just spent over 6 hours reviewing to promote one of my humble poems..got to 1 place out of getting it to the fearture page and was just about to buy the appropriate membership pumps to take it to the fearture page when the 3 day time limit Expired right in front of me..SO DISAPPOINTED and disallusioned with the system at the same time oh well thems the poetic breaks I have sorta lost the impetus to post right now I will revaluate my worth of coming here over the next day or so for I can see how you can get totally obsessed with this site and the review process

    shelley i did not wait this was a test and I obviuously failed still can't see how anyone could review enough people to attain the required points unless they are buying member dollars i just reviewed for 6 hours straight at the end of the day it mattters not people either come here because they like what you write or they are brownie point hunters personally the review ratings system breeds spitefulness and pissing in one's pocket syndrome like why have aq ratings system that goes fcrom 1 to 6 if everyone gives everyone 5 or higher? like that leaves no where else to go but down to you see my point?

    ravenblack: I was not referring to you with multiple poems posted at once. When things are posted for upwards of 1.50 and one person has 3 or 4 poems posted at once in the top twelve, it makes it nigh impossible to review enough to place a poem in the top twelve. Unless you use your credit card which the vast majority of us cannot afford to do. -
    Erik McGinley: If you are in the top half of the second page you get almost as many reviews as you do if you are in the top twelve, which doesn't mean that I don't put something into the top twelve when I want the attention on something.

    Bumping something right up to number one with an ott reward really doesn't do you any good, though maybe it's good for reviewers.

    People who earn their cents from reviewing review just about everything so their is no real point in worrying too much about your placement.

    Top twelve anywhere works if you just want a little extra exposure. -
    Samuel Dickens: I understand. You can work your tail off doing reviews and get very little in return. Last year I was #25 in short works, but now am somewhere below whale poop. -


DR DIP: I READ TOO MANY BEAUTIFUL POETS ON HERE WHO HAVE NOT THE TIME OR THE IMPETUS To promote their beautiful works and as I delve into their profiles I find many beautiful poems unread all because they are only worth 2 cents to the hungry brownie points hungry poets whose works although very good would pale into mediocrity compared, Look! please do not take me the wrong way on this point it is just a personal observation..that some of fanstory's most brilliant poets and wordsmiths( and the list is huge) works do not see the light of day other than the two complimentary reviews before the are lost into the archives of anonymity. Its sad but unfortunatel if fanstory is to survive financially I suppose the monetary side of the business has to be.
personally I would rather pay a flat fee of 100 dollars that's an extra 52 dollars per yearly subscription ( 2 meals at the bistro) and have our works seen by and reviewed by all as many times as they like.
is this opinion shared by anyone else or am I just being whatever?
please share your view here for I know there are some beautiful wordsmiths out there whose works will be unseen by the majority I suppose at the end of the day its depends on your agenda and impetus to come to this wonderful site hey if its for the love of it and the passion just to write well I'm with you

    adewpearl: I agree that many fine writers receive little notice because they do not promote their work. As for the solution, I never would have signed up on the site for $100. That extra $52 is quite significant for many of us. I don't go to a bistro twice a year unless someone else is paying because I can't afford it, and I know from talking with many people who can't afford to take my classes that lots of folks are on fixed incomes and don't see that kind of money as something they can part with. Many of us have more time than money and earn our promotional dollars by reviewing others. For those without the time to review and without the funds to buy promotional dollars, I wish I had a solution. -
    mrsmajor: DR DIP, I agree with you, I often look at the work of writers way down on the listings, and find beautiful work, (at least to me)...but the only way we can get our work posted is by reviewing, or buy member cents....I just hope the poets would review more, so that their work would be read..Also the more one writes, there's the chance of being included in fan lists....That also helps to get one's work read, it's a matter of sharing each other's poetry...I must say I would not pay $100 at sign-up time....That's a bit much, but I do wish all the poets on this site, the very best.. -

    michaelcahill: A lot of truth in what you say. But, remember that those of us that scrape up the 9.95 to promote and get reviews get that sum by reviewing several pieces ourselves. Participation is the name of the game. 100 bucks is a lot for me as well. The individual that settles for the two reviews is doing just that, settling for that. No one is preventing that person from reviewing the pieces on the front page and promoting that piece. You are correct though, I've read some great work that slips through the cracks. But, if the artist doesn't care enough to promote it what can we do? -
    DR DIP: with respect to all you guys I really do make the effort to review others and they are NOT your one dollar twenty poets all the time I review ya 2 cent poets as well as for the extra 52 dollars for a year..that equates to putting away one dollar a week? oh please we are not talking thousands of dollars here just relinquish a cup of coffee or a donut a few times a year and you have the money aside. really, 100 bucks sounds pricey in the scheme of things but to get your works reviewed by any body and every body endlessly is a small price to pay. look I love this site and I know it cost money to run it..I don't smoke, I don't drink I surf and that cost money so to pursue my passion I work and put a little aside for that trip same could be for my second passion these days and that is to write and visit this sire and believe me I really make an effort when I have the time to review as many as possible but the incentive unfortunately is to continue to review the poets worth the most dollars to get to the 995 the quickest way possible so I too an guilty of being a slave to the system if my comments irk people be it but I am sticking with my stance on increasing the subscription to allow for unlimited reviews like lets put it out there and see what the other 2 cent poets think? -
    DR DIP: With respect Brooke you of all people should see the point I am making you mist be fanstory's most diligent eviewre putting in MANY hours to get your review points up and that's fine as you say you have the time I suppose its like the analogy of handwashing your car yourself or taking it to the car wash and letting others do it for you lol

    michaelcahill: I'm not sure that there is an actual disagreement. Perhaps two ideas that are compatible are being stated. What if there was an option for a more expensive membership that would garner more reviews. A 100 dollar deluxe membership that would get you four or five reviews instead of two? I've reviewed many 2cent pieces and encouraged the authors to do some reviewing and promote their work. Some have done so and become fairly prominent. I don't think there is one answer. Perhaps the answer is a combination of all that we are discussing. -
    Dean Kuch: I read everything that comes into my inbox, for the most part, and time permitting. It matters very little to me if it is worth two cents, or one dollar in "pretend money". Something can be learned and garnered from everything we read, regardless of the blood money being offered to read it. But, sadly, I too find I have to promote my own work to astronomical proportions monetarily if I want that particular piece of poetry or prose to be reviewed adequately. Perhaps it is the genre in which I write. Not too many fairies or butterflies live in the dark corners of my world. -
    DR DIP: Good debate by all and I can see merit on both sides of the equation lets see what comes out of the wash I am sure fanstory admin. are aware of this argument that has raised its head more than once at least we have stirred the pot which is a good thing I feel -

DR DIP: WELL on Tuesday last, was my 59th birthday and my 8th month of being on fanstory.
I continue to read and be amazed at so many beautiful and talented poets on this site and your continued very valued critique and comment. As I have said on several occasion in reply and message, it has been a huge learning curve for me and I sincerely appreciate advice and suggestions given to my humble posts . I have now posted over 370 poems on this wonderful site and beside the politics and bullshit on a few things I still enjoy it.. I have no interst what so ever in the value OF THE RATINGS SYSTEM OR THE POINTS GIVEN IT MEANS DIDDLY SHIT TO ME BUT Rather the positive and constructive critique..not some piss in ya pocket bullshit just because you want brownie points stuff..to my 'fans' which I know sounds so pretentious! lol

DR DIP: tonight i submitted my 300th poem on fanstory probably means nothing in the scheme of things but to me its a bit of a milestone. I only joined fanstory in may and although time does not allow me to review all the works of fellow poets that i would like i have thoroughly enjoyed the site and the beautiful poets i have continually had the pleasure of reviewing when given the chance through time constraints. i have learnt so much and have gained a lot of great fanstory friends. to the people that continually review my humble simple works i sincerely thank you.the last 4 years since i discovered the passion to write, have been some of the most enjoyable and satisfying days of my life and i sincerely thankyou for this and hope our fanstory friendships continue

DR DIP: It wopuld be remiss of me not to personallly thank all of my fellow poets and especially people that "fanned" me. I have really appreciated this site for the shear brilliance of my fellow writers who continually leave me in awe of the ability with the written word.I am greatly honoured and humbled by the many warm reviews I had received over the 4 months of coming to fanstory. I really do value and rate this site..poetic politics and all and as I have said many times, it has been a real learning curve for me since coming and contributing here. The quality of works I have reviewed and read blows me away. For i am just a hack compared to some of the beautiful works.
unfortunately time and dedication to this site to what it deserves is untenable for me at the moment so it was either 100 % or not at all..so i have had to unfortunately give it a break for a while, while I pursue other projects..I have some 4 books in the woodwork to peublish. I have written enought poems for 10 books with 150 poems in each. but obviously would cull down to what I feel is 4. I have al;ready self published "poems from the heart" and have been overwhelmed by the response i have received..I am hoping to have my next book poems from the sea published before xmas..time management is my biggest problem at the moment..between writing , operating and keeping a wife happy..there are only so many hours in the day I'm afraid!

DR DIP: "Pays 1 point and 2 member cents"....I've said this many times before,what is the incentive for a reviewer to want to even review your work for a couple of cents?

How is your worth determined here? It has certainly got ME stuffed I tell you..in 6 more posts I would have submitted 200 poems in just over 3 months coming here....after 200?..I'm out of here!!
I tell ya, I'd rather pay a hundred dollars a year subscription fee and piss this silly review ratings system off completely if it meant that Everybody can review your works as many times as they want to, then to see this bloody "Certificate Expired" after two reviews come up..Sorry, but as much as I have really enjoyed this site and the beautiful talented poets on here.
I am completely over the clique club I'm afraid.
The pyramid selling, aeroplane club might suit some...but I am done. To all my friends that I have made on here....Thanks for your very generous reviews and critiques over the short time I have been coming here, and even though I might have pissed off a few people with HONEST reviews and scores below 5 or 6 I have still enjoyed this site immensely.

DR DIP: I have to make an admission which I am very ashamed of. The other day after I raised enough brownie points to go further up in the seats in the fanstory aeroplane club,I actually found I received more than two reviews for my rather inane rhyming work lol and as I usually personally respond to EVERY review that I receive when I was asked about certain lines in one of my 180 poems I had decided to re promote I admit to becoming lazy and Cut and pasted an explanation on to the 6 or so reviewers I received! I was utterly disgusted with myself and I promise it will not happen again!!
can I get out of the confession box now before returning to the back of the plane with the plebs? lol

DR DIP: As of tonight I have now posted 180 poems on fanstory and in that time I have reviewed many other poet's work with enthusiasm and honesty. but what is the incentive for people to review your work if its only worth 32 membership cents to the reviewer? just asking.
as much as i love this site i am a bit bewildered by the scaling and rating of some of the poets that I review who's work is fantastic only to find their work is only worth 2 membership cents! go figure..yeah, yeah i know all the stuff about there been there a long time and thats why they are worth more member dollars..but its natural that you would be favouring the more "noted" poets in the fanstory aeroplane club whose worksare constantly worth above $1.20.. that means it would only take on average seven revies to gain $10 membership dollars to by 3 days of review time..I'm sorry if i sound like i am whinging but i am whinging on behalf of all fanstory poets whose works deserve a whole lot better tyhan 3 review points!! just my opinion...if i have completely missed the point of how this amway style acknowledgement works i a pologise and refute my whinge!!

    nor84: If you review someone's work and it's only paying two cents, blame the poet for not promoting. It may be that he or she did promote and the certificate expired before you read the poem. Work reverts to two cents once the certificate expires. Some members don't promote at all, and in that case only the first few to read the work get the basic, which is about 50 cents. After that, the work is at two cents. As far as review points go, forget about it. They have nothing to do with how much a work pays the reviewer or how high the poet rises in the rankings. The only thing that matters so far as rankings are concerned is the number of reviews the poem receives, and if it isn't promoted, it doesn't get very many. -
    DR DIP: fully understand this nor you are missing my point i'm afraid maybe i didn't explain it well enough whether they promote it or not and the complimentary two reviews expires i don't agree with this whole principal as i have said the incentive to gain review dollars is to look at the top 12 poets because they obviously draw the highest reviews because of exposure..if one wants to promote the less significant poet and they are only worth 2 cents, you hav3e to review an awful lot of so called insignificant poets and unfortunately thats the criteria of the system. i would love and do try and promote the less exposed poet..but for me to gain points to promote my own work by buying review time requires a hell of a lot of reviews and that can be very time consuming. i'd rather pay 100 dollars peryear to fanstory admin than 48 dollars a year if it means more review exposure time,,just my opinion and viewpoint

    as of right now I have two entries worth 47 each to the reviewer

    I can not raise them because I do not have the member dollars

    I spent hours on the computer yesterday and did not achieve much

    I was never a fan of rankings

    I only read and comment on the entries that interest me

    if there is something that does not I just pass and move on

    my point is this
    yes the system is off balance

    the writer can not raise because of lack of member dollars

    it doesn't mean for me that the writer is being offensive or has no regard to the reviewer

    I have seen and commented on many 2 cent entries

    but that's just me

    so what is the solution

    I can not speak for anyone else
    I however do not want to buy member dollars with my credit card

    I thank you for raising this issue
    it always has a way of being ever present and before us

    Arnhem: Write on Dr Dip.......It's a scam, no money no honey. These people set up these ventures to make money, not to support aspiring writers. Have a read of some of the higher rated writers works and you will see that the quality of their work is sometimes poor and all the ratings stars are bought with cold hard cash, not well worked words? I thought this site was about genuine appraisals from like minded wordsmiths but it appears to be just another rort. Scamstory suckered me in too, I refuse to add insult to injury by forking out my hard earned cash after having already paid forty something dollars to register. -

I'd rather see the star system pissed off all together, have unlimited reviews or views to my work and pay an extra 50 bucks joining fee then to have these so called "certificate expired" prompts come up after only 2 views..not everyone has the time for a start, to sit down and review hundreds of poems only to get 2 cents for it..no wonder fan story are losing good poets on this site because of this exact reason..sad really?

DR DIP: So here I am over a month down the track into my new obsession..coming on fanstory.
I'm loving the diversity and the sheer brilliance of fellow poets .and I really appreciate both positive and negative critique and advice to improve. As i have said, It is a real learning curve for me and I have really enjoyed this curve I am on.
sadly i do suffer from severe short term memory loss and my concentration span to read short stories and novels is zilch! lol so i apologise that i have never critiqued this genre on fanstory but believe me i deeply appreciate how well some people can write and I am in awe.For those who have enjoyed my posts of my romantic style poems i am deeply honoured that you have received them with such positive reviews. i still have so much to learn about the rules of poetry because really i didn't realise there were any before coming here? lol
still i will endeavour to grammatically and poetically improve my writings as time progresses

DR DIP: Can someone tell me what the term to be "muted"..in the context of fan story..does that happen if you don't give someone 5 stars or above?..just wondering for I have been muted by someone who obviously didn't appreciate me giving below 5 and this was someone who I had admired greatly as a contributor and poet on this site..oh well..a bit stupid having stars below 5 if you can't use them..its a bit like a surfing judge..if you give a 10 on their first wave..you have no where else to go but down I'm afraid. What happened to personal opinion?

    nor84: People mute you for various reasons, one of them being if you give less than five stars. It's THEIR loss, not yours. There are plenty who, on the other hand, appreciate a four-star review, and even lower, as long as it's delivered politely, with an intention to help. The site has a reviewing system and everyone is told when they join to expect tough critiques. Tough doesn't mean unkind, it just means thorough and telling the writer if there's a problem he or she should overcome.

    Some people are chasing the meaningless rankings when they should be trying to polish their craft. -

    Dean Kuch: When an author on this site 'mutes' you, it because they no longer have any desire to have correspondence with you, whether it be the writings you post, or comments and reviews you wish to give them. Typically, this rarely happens here, but, it has happened to me. Sometimes, the poets our authors who consider themselves to be above everyone else would rather mute you for a scathing, yet honest, review you've given them. Their work, in their eyes, is beyond reproach, criticism, or editing. If they post it, you'd better like it...OR ELSE! As said earlier, it is their loss, not yours. If we close our collective minds to opinions from the very people we are trying to entertain? We may as well hang up our writing tools and go our separate ways. After all, even Stephen King has an editor... -

"Terrible, insipid and snide poems. Rhymes are okay, but are mostly forgettable shrugs of language that work for a time and then are easily forgotten." Also not helped by the curious picture you have selected for your profile shot--"a smiling middle-aged guy; fit, looking relaxed, maybe losing some hair but with a sun tan and a shirt open all the way outside his nipples". Kind of smarmy in this context.

Poems from the Heart sounds like a really common title for self-published poets who really only write things to cheer themselves up when time spent in one's real life gets overwhelming. I'm sure I'm a nice guy.
