Chalice is in her middle 40's, with time on her hands. She hopes to develop enough discipline to write everyday like she should, and hopes someday to enjoy the great privilege of managing to sell a novel length piece of fiction. She is tired of selling short stories to pulpy magazines.

Writing is stubborn persistence,
angelic patience and pain,
it's drowning in a deluge of words,
that gush willy nilly to explain.

Edit this, rewrite that, until letters
start to roll and cross,
sifting reams of he said, she said
for cliche, rancid structure and dross.

Agonizing hours spent staring in hope
of spotting what you just can't find,
the offensive comma, the misspelled word
or the perfectly gross grammar line.

Hacking away at that fat manuscript
till it's thin, thinner, and thinnest,
deciding on how the climax stops,
and where in the hell to begin it.

Plowing critics for the one you trust,
weeding the smart from the mean,
wondering if it ever gets any easier,
or if your head is stuck in a dream.
