This story meets the requirements for the contest. It has a very good chance of winning the contest. Excellent work! No grammatical errors. Thanks for sharing! Good luck!

It is amazing what you might find out when you go digging into the past. I'm sure it was exciting to find out something about a family member you didn't know about and to see the same given name as your father had.

Thank you for sharing about your great uncle. I liked that you mention the few infractions of uniform and absence from the base (oh, and being drunk!) but that all paints a picture of a very young man who was facing an unusual time in history and probably really shocked in his first experience away from home. Best wishes in the contest!

One typo in your notes: The solder on the far left (soldier)

It is amazing what research can show these decades later. It is good to know our roots.

Enjoyed the read.

Best of luck in the War writing prompt contest.

So this was based on a real story? This is amazing! It's funny how history keeps finding its way back to the surface. Especially after a hundred years.

Yes it is true. I found #1966 by accident and NFLD keeps excellent records.

Interesting true story about an ancestor who was killed in war war one as a 19-year-old fighting in France. Thanks for sharing this story and doing the research to track down what happened. Bill

Thank you Bill for the comments and review. What was interesting was not knowing that he existed at all until a couple of years ago. Not too much was known about that side of the family.

This is very touching .A person's identity is just 1966 -a number that denotes he was just one of many .How did you discover this grave? I am glad that though a bit late somebody remembered to visit his grave .This should win the contest.

There was a NFL's website that did a bio of each soldier .
    Thank you for your review.

This is a wonderful bit of history and it is a great story and very well written. Family history is the best, I think. I like reading about actual people from their families as it gives the story heart, in my opinion. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing. Stay safe.

This is a very factual account of the first world war, shorn of all the pain and gore of the battles and death - the toll of which was enormous. What comes across most clearly is the feeling of incompletion, the not knowing. Not knowing who, where, or why.
