This is such a sad and moving story.
I don't know if you have relations who were on that side of the war or you have read about it.
I think it was an interesting and good idea to tell the story from the unpopular side. People sometimes seem to forget that both sides have sons they love and no one wants innocents to die.
Your story was well-told and memorable. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for taking the time to read and to comment. Much appreciated. It is unfortunate that wars are fought by the young who are sent to die by those who never face the horrors of war.

Did the Germans believe in Vahalla? I thought that was a viking thing. Interesting to see the story of the war on Eastern Front for a change and their sense of loyalty to Hitler.

Thanks for the read and review. Wagner opera was Viking, but Goebbels and Hitler made it a German thing. "Even today Wagner is associated in the minds of many with Nazism and his operas are often thought to extol the virtues of German nationalism." (Wikipedia.org)

This is an interesting piece. I think you do a great job of getting into a German soldiers head. This must be towards the end of the Russian campaign as all the excitement is gone and realism is hitting. Well done!

I thought this was an excellent re-creation of a "real" war, not a movie war. Adding the German words, with some explanation really adds to the story...it looks like you did a lot of research. The last paragraph is especially impactful. Very nice, deserving of my 6-star.

You know your history that the biggest mistake Hitler made was going into Russia. I enjoyed you showed that you showed this from the view of the German solder as he faces the reality that the fatherland is defeated.
If I had a critique it would be the last paragraph where the solder tells the reader all the emotions that one can feel. My thought is to make the reader feel his pain and hopelessness. I am cold, I do know when the enemy will come. Will the end be quick or will I slowly freeze to death. My frozen hands are to cold to shoot, but maybe that is what I want etc etc.
Just a rambling thought.

Thanks much for your read and review. I like your ramble and will work on the last paragraph more show and less tell. Thanks.

Wow, amazing. I initially assumed it was an Allied soldier and when it flipped it grabbed my attention. The detail of the grim nature of war was brilliantly bold. Well done. War is Hell..and you didn't hold back.
