Hello Bill
You are an engaging writer and I enjoy your restrained humour you use in most (if not all) of your writing. This is a wonderfully descriptive piece, well worth it just for "...the backseat of a clown car, on fire, driving off a cliff, with the volume on the radio turned to brain scan..." This is great, caustic, imagery.
I am assuming that you had insufficient space for the title hence 'ofthe' and 'NewMexico' lacking spaces? I think 'spin-off' and '55-gallon' need to be hyphenated, but I apologize in advance if I am incorrect in that assumption.
You have a keen eye and ear, and an (apparently) interesting-enough background to write something longer. These pieces are like appetizers.
I wish you well with you continued writing, but i suggest you think of a bigger canvas. Just a thought.
Cheers

Thank you, phil. I have a couple chapter books on the site from a couple of years ago.

Ok it's official: Arizona is OFF my travel list. I don't do well in desserts and if New Mexico is as bad as you say it is I won't even bother going there.

The special situations are the lack of hydration, cramped quarters, and the Doom Patrol as family.

Bill - as usual, educational as well as entertaining. It is obvious that you have been nursing this dislike of New Mexico for a long time. I hope none of your reviewers are from NM, it could have a very bad effect on your average. LOL- Jerry

My perspective is from a youth trapped in a car with lunatics.

I remember the fact that my family was on a camping trip through the west and we got into New Mexico nearing night. We needed a place to came and there wasn't one. We attempted to spend the night sleeping in a truck at one of those rest stops with a trash can. It was a nightmare I'll never forget. I cracked up at the description of your brother's driving and the Buick torture chamber with no water. Sound like a nightmare for you as well. I enjoyed reading your take on this state.

Thank you, Beth. I mean, why drive through New Mexico when you can run through a bonfire with a full bladder.

Bill, you have a real knack for comic writing. This chapter is hilarious. I laughed out loud at the account of your brother's driving. Hopeful New Mexico has improved since those days..
Looking forward eagerly to reading about the next state on your list.
Stay safe

Thank you, Julia. So happy you got a kick out of New Mexico.

It sounds like your brothers driving was the only exciting thing that happened on your grand tour through the state. I can't even imagine what that must've been like. I imagine your parents weren't to excited about letting you drive when you was old enough after that.

Ours was a Volkswagon Station Wagon Torture chamber!! LOL! My husband spends time out at WSMR for tests periodically... it's HOT (but much cooler at night!)... ;) A great one here, sir -- bring on the next!! ;) Thanx for sharing all those grins this morning (especially the family drama memories!):) :) Yvette

This was hilarious! You forgot to mention Area 51. I've never been to New Mexico, but I'll take your word and stay out. Brothers should be brother's. Keep'em coming.

Bill, This is a very interesting post you have penned about the state of New Mexico. My brother in law lives there and has for quite some time. I don't think I want to go there anytime soon. Thanks for sharing. Blessings,Teri

What I like about this: I read :"I shoulda..." and already
thought this was going to be a fun read because of the tone of that sentence; I started reading and found I was right! ; I actually laughed at descriptions of a minted teenager, torture chamber, local zero; with these your story has flavor and relatability to most families whose trips later become fodder for fun retellings. I enjoyed this. It made me remember our own awful trips that we talk about lovingly now. I did learn a thing or two, too!
Last sentence...out (of) the cage
