I love the way you blend the ancient past with the present. The ghosts of those kings and queens seem to keep the romance of the area alive.
The sonnet is true to form. Well done.

A lovely sonnet, Janet. Cornwall has a special place in my heart. I used to go there every summer holidays as a child, to Mullion, a small fishing village on the southern coast. What a wonderful sense of history there is, and your words capture that well. Did you visit Tintagel?

Thank you Tony for this lovely review. We did go to Tintagel. In fact, the picture that I posted with the poem is at Tintagel. Loved it.
I will have to look on my map to see where Mullion is to see if we were there or near there.

Jmf,
This is such an eerily beautiful poem. I remember landscaping like this in Wuthering Heights and other movies. The land seems resilient and pure, and a desirable and a rugged place to live. The photo is nice, and your excellent poem makes me wish I could travel to Cornwall.
Best wishes,
Cindy (congrats on the all time best).

Thank you Cindy for this lovely review. The picture is from near Tintagel Castle on the coast. It was a magical place. I hope you get to go there once this horrible virus is in the past.

I love this. Made me feel like I visited Cornwall too. Glad you got there before the pandemic.

Good rhyme and meter and poetic devices. Skillfully penned!

Two comma suggestions for your kind consideration:

Their horses can be seen now(,) as before(,)
with spirit riders racing to and fro.

(love the consonance of S and soft C in the above 2 lines!)

My favorite lines to read aloud (especially the H, C, SH, L and D sounds:

The hedgerows cross the hills, then cross again,
dividing fields with heavy underbrush.
A labyrinth-like path leads to a glen
where moss and lichens flourish wild and lush.

The closing is perfect and the phrase FERAL PURITY is a stroke of poetic genius!

With pride, I claim this rugged hinterland
and pray its feral purity will stand.

the alliteration also serves the closing couplet well.

Impressive work! WISH I HAD A SIX.

Hugs,
rd

Thank you dear rd for this wonderful review and virtual 6 stars. That is a tremendous feeling for me.

I appreciate your kind comments and the suggestions. You always point out things I hadn't noticed. I'm learning to be more aware of the sounds in a poem from reading your reviews.

    Thank you again my friend.

Hello there, Jmf4119

A fine sonnet written in ABAB rhyme, describing the wonderful Cornish countryside with its mists and kings/queens n castles...

Having lived in Cornwall for many years when I was younger, I can relate to this fine sonnet of yours.

It can be a rugged and desolate place, especially out there on the moors. I used to live in a place called Tremar... right on the edge of the moorland, with open fields, cattle and sheep munching away at my garden plants...

Did you visit Dartmoor Prison? It's always shrouded in mist there.

A fine write and a pleasure to read and reminisce.

kind regards

trimple

Thank you for this wonderful review. Dartmoor Prison was pointed out to us but we did not stop. Our guide had us on a tight schedule which was nice to see so much but left us with little time to check out things on our own.
I loved seeing the sheep and cattle and horse roaming freely in the fields and countryside. I hope that one day we can go back again.
The reunion we attended was in the area of Arundel which we loved.

How nice to hear from someone who is familiar and even know te topic of the poem.

    Thank you again.
    Blessings

Hello Jmf4119 and smiles to your sonnet. I can see why it is on the Best list. I read about you planning to England to celebrate your anniversary and your milestone birthdays.
from reading your delightful sonnet----
Cornwall in Autumn from what I read and how you described the moors, the fields and hedgerows cross the hills are a sight to view.

I'm hooked on the title alone :) And the photograph has me swooning. So now I'm off to read. ... Ah, spirit riders racing to and for; just lovely. I watched all of "Time Team" - I bet you know of it - and what is just beneath that earth - yes, I can feel every word you wrote.

It lasted for 20 years in Britian - the show is over now but I loved it. The first few years they were on a tight budget and ironing out the details of the show - but it really takes off and it is fun seeing them marvel at technology that we now consider "no big deal" :)

Thanks - we will look for it. We watch mostly British TV these days.

This is a great poem, and thanks for sharing your personal experience in the notes. I really like how you express the idea of connecting with the previous generations who lived there. Thanks for sharing your creativity. Bill

In all of my travels I've noticed, the more rugged the landscape the more beautiful it is. What a wonderfully written poem.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day and God bless.

Beautiful poetry on Mother Nature. I am not a poet, but a painter. And as I read your poetry, the picture dances before my mind's eyes. Thanks for sharing!
