A sad story much like my dad's life. I think God wants us to change and accept the blessing we have in our relationships instead of throwing them away. My dad finally changed in the last moments of his life after losing everything. I often wondered why he waited so long. A painful to read story for me, but a valuable message inside for those who need to read it.
Sending you my best today as always,
Sally xos.....

I am sorry for triggering painful memories. I thank you for your generous comments. My goal with anything that I write is to try to touch my readers with something, a frown , a smile or even a tear.

Waiting To Die

Hello, Nomi,

Great story/poem and I am sure it fits in with many veterans. It's so sad...
You created a believable life. I can't believe trump said veterans are losers and suckers. You did a good job honoring them.

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, some still do not believe or accept that PTSD is real and it affects far too many of our young who are thrust into combat way before they are ready, if indeed one can ever be ready to the horrors of modern day combat.

Hello Nomi, a very well written poem with a story. This is fiction that reeks of truths. There will be, and have been, many who can identify with the words in this poem. Good rhyme and rhythm maintained in these ten stanzas. The stanza mentioning the back of the bus makes a strong statement. Well done and warm regards Dorothy x

Thank you so much for your generous assessment of my poem. The statement about the back of the bus was personal, That is how my mom, my sister and I left the South. I did not want to come off angry. bitter or preachy, I pray that I did not. Much of this story is based on my life, but only some. I have been happily married for 47 years, and I have no desire to die. I thank you for reading and reviewing.

It was my pleasure Nomi. You were not alone - some great names in the music world were treated badly, eg my favourite of all time - Nat King Cole. regards Dx

Hello Nolan. Seems like it has been a very long time since I last read one of your writings. This poem holds much about life and living, doesn't it?

I particularly liked these lines:

"The day came when I graduated
This was a time I anticipated
It came when we were well situated
The reward for hard work, was created."

Brilliant, Nolan. Bob

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

In my opinion, a superb work, "Exceptional" - definitive and as "real" as life is for some - I felt emotional as I read - a piece certainly for not only our present, but the days and years ahead, as a constant reminder of what can be and unfortunately is, for far too many, especially those who protect and ensure our freedoms...

War, though it has proved to be necessary at times, it has never been a pleasant thing, and has never brought lasting good results. For example WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc.

I know and agree. I have family members who served...Eve

Such as outstanding poem! I wish I still had six stars to give because this definitely deserves it. You are an excellent observer of "real life incidents and conversations" because you put together a poem that rings of realism. The words flow well.
Exceptional job!

I can well imagine this life was played out many times over, nomi. You tell the story of a wasted life and the person understanding too late what it has cost him/her. Well done. Nancy:)

Thank you. I like to think that this sad example gives deep meaning to the phrase "War is hell."

"Waiting To Die", is an exceptionally well-written, and heart-breaking piece. This talented poet has with craft and skill, told it as he saw it. To me, this is definitely a six, but sadly I've run out of them. Life seems to have a way of kicking us hardest, just when we're trying to get up again. I look forward to seeing your next post.

War can indeed bend the mind and thwart the future and soldiers often suffer with PTSD and need much loving care and some never properly recover. This can happen after a traumatic childhood too. A sensitive write with excellent rhyming, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Nomi,
The narrator of this poem has done so much with his life for good or bad. I feel a little dismayed that he says he's now waiting to die. People sometimes don't forgive our indiscretions, but God does. At any age people can ask God for forgiveness. And their heart and mind begin to change.
I understand why you ended the poem this way, though. It does have an effect on the reader. This is a stellar poem; good luck in all your writing ventures.

Thank you so much. Yes I never intended to imply that this was the only course open to the person, this was simply his giving up on life. Which to me is the saddest consequence of a ruined life.

I agree. The last part of your poem came off well!
