Hi Melissa
When I hear wolf howls, I think of two movies. One is the 1983 adventure/drama, "Never Cry Wolf", starring Untouchable Charles Martin Smith. It's a comical docudrama. Smith said: "It was the loneliest film I've ever worked on."
The other movie is the 2011 "The Grey", another adventure/drama. Wolves gradually attack and eat the survivors of a plane crash in freezing cold Alaska. Liam Neeson starred.
Love the artwork!
This line is a tongue-twister,
"across the frost-crisp'd air" ... nice inner near rhyme with "across/frost"
This is what wolves do... they stalk, a terrific synonym for "hunt".
Nicely penned! Good Luck in the contest!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Hi Bob. Thank you so very much. I am delighted you like this one. I think wolves are such unique creatures... a cross between a dog and some other nebulous, mystic animal. Much appreciated.

I admired your use of the cinquain form as your vehicle for this description of the "feral stalkers". Your choices of "scratch" and the dramatic picture are very effective. Best wishes in the contest- Joan

Hello Melissa
Beautiful eloquent cinquain. I like the concept of the howls as sound waves visible in frosted air. Also the verb "scratch" brings to mind the teeth edging noise of chalk scraped across a blackboard.
Love your description of the packs as 'feral stalkers." I can almost see eyes gleaming in the darkness and hear panting breath.
Good luck in the contest with this superb entry
Stay safe
Blessings Julia

Whether wolves or coyotes, when they hunt as a pack - it can be quite intimidating. And their howling at the moon must make the little critters shiver in fear! Your piece captures these feelings. Well done!

This is an excellent entry in this cinquain poetry Contest Melissa, Somehow these riots that are going on, seem to be associated with a wolf pack of thoughtless anger being outworked. Well done, great post, good luck, blessings Roy

This is very picturesque. "Frost-crisp'd air" is great. The howls of the wolves must be chilling. "Stalkers" is a great way to describe them. I like the continuity in your five lines. They flow together smoothly. Very appropriate and vivid picture to accompany. You can almost hear the howling. Best of luck in the contest. judi

You're welcome. JannyPan (Jan) has written so much about the moon, and I didn't realize there were so many names for them. judi

LOL How would you like to hear that trio sing if you were camped out in a tent or even without a tent, only a fire to ward off predator's? A beautiful picture and a very well done cinquain. Good luck in the contest, Melissa. Nancy:)

I am hoping I am never camping when a wolf pack is near, Nancy. Ewww, it scares me just to think of it.

The coyote's howl is very eerie no matter how far away you are. Your poem is well-written, very interesting. Your great description took me back to a time when I heard their frightening cries. Nicely done.

Hi Misty... so that eerie memory is the place you draw from to write your stunning tension and friction. Thank you for the great review.

This is so beautiful that it isn't scary at all. The animals are fully in their element here. I love the personification of 'howls scratching." I also enjoyed looking at the poem as a whole and reading the first and last word...Listen...stalkers! No exclamation pint but that is how I read it... So quiet you can hear stalkers!
I would give this a six because it is so little but evokes so many feelings about the content and presentation too.
