Oh, you do like to write the tear-jerkers these days, don't you, Lady Sal? Wasn't enough that I wrote that damn 3-liner a few days ago... now this! You know, you gotta know that I REALLY like you because normally? I would skip any and all stories that I know are really mushy (happy or sad) cuz I just end up sad. The opening scene was really poignant, this picture of a chance meeting on a train that sparks intense feeling, all kinds of possibilities of romance that go unfulfilled as the man doesn't express his feelings. We have all been there before, wondering about the might have beens. But your story has a chance happy ending too. Cancer treatment somehow brings back Ali, in leaving a book that the man recognizes. And low and behold, she is still single. It all ends in a wedding. hope springs eternal. estory

Wow! That's quite a story, Sally. Did Burt survive? Did they get to spend their senior years together? Isn't that something, that they would meet again? Did Alice actually write "Strangers on a Train"? It would be the perfect clue for their reunion and eventual wedding.
I am a huge fan of the early Beatles. Not so much after "Rubber Soul". When I was an early teen, 1963-64, my friends and I used to pantomime the Beatles for all the neighborhood kids who'd come to watch. We used lamp stands for microphones, and turn up the record player as loud as it would go. We cut out heavy cardboard in the shape of their guitars, and color them appropriately. One of the songs we did was "Till There Was You", a beautiful love song. Years ago, there was a contest about Beatle songs, to re-write one into a story poem. It's back in my portfolio somewhere. Mine started out,
"There were bills on the fridge,
But I never saw their due date... " etc. etc.
"Till There Was You" was actually written in 1957 by Meredith Willson, for the Broadway musical, "The Music Man". Paul McCartney wanted to do a cover for it. It's one of the few that Paul and John didn't write. Meredith Willson also write "76 Trombones" for the same musical. He also wrote "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas".
You tell a wonderful story, Sally. It could be a movie. Easily. A classic, in fact, with the correct actors. I'd say Helen Hunt for Alice, and Harrison Ford for Burt. What do you think?

Thank you for the wonderful review and glorious stars! I?m honored and blessed, dear Kimbob. Patricia Highsmith wrote ?Strangers on a Train.? I think it was written in the 1950s. Since I am a Disc Jockey of sorts, I knew about this song?s origins in ?The Music Man.? I still love it, and it remains my all time Fab Four favorite. Your choice for them is outstanding. I especially love Harrison Ford. He?s the right age. Helen Hunt is a bit young, but makeup could age her.

I didn't realize Ford was that old... he's 78. Twenty years ago, he would have worked for Burt. He would have been 58. And the perfect match for Alice would have been Shelley Fabares. She would have been 56. Ah, time is a bandit. He ambushes us. No mercy.

"September Grass" has a double meaning for this story; both a time of year, and a season of life -- and additionally, it harkens back to the Vietnam Era when this lovestruck couple met. (I was a JT fan, but for some reason, this lovely song escaped me.)
I also always loved "Til There Was You;" even though the Beatles didn't write it, they performed it so well!
I just love happy endings, and you have certainly given us one, with this amazing, romantic story.

Personally, as we're dealing with chemo, I can't imagine anyone in that end stage going through chemo even wanting a romance. But I'm not a romantic type. Lol. Good job with the storytelling!

Dear Sally, the six is for the way you told it and how you show me that he world needs this kind of story where a regret about love can be redeemed later in life.
