Ciso sugarray!

I knew a person that had cancer ..

She did chemo and radio .. This last treatment was the worse .. It left her skin very sensitive to light..

Another lady in her late 60s had cancer below ..

she was very courageous during the months proceeding her death..

but the last days were hell .. despite the morphine she was screaming when she was bathed and turned over .

Knowing children and teens get cancer is hard to accept

.. despite their illness they still find reason to be happy, play , laugh...

I'm not sure if I would have that kind of inner strength ..

I already find it hard ageing .. not being able to do as much manual work as before.

I hope I die quick ..I don't want to linger on ...

Lucia, my best friend .. her father was left paralysed on his left side after a stroke and he has advanced Alzheimer's too.. half his liver was removed 5 years ago..

His life has become a calvario.. a misery... and so has hers.. It 's not easy for those that assist either.

I think your poem gives the read lots to ponder on ..

Thank you Franca. Your review gives me a lot to think about. The suffering seems unbearable to those who are sick.. at times. Thank you for your insightful comments!!!!

Melissa,

A very strong photograph accompanies your powerful few words. Your first line describes the agony a patient might endure.

I needed to decide if the "patient" was the person or the attitude needed to endure. As such, an alternative might be:

patient suffers through pain

or

needed as patient battles

Mark

A very well-written six-word poem about recovering from an illness or accident takes a lot of courage and patience to endure the pain and heal physically and mentally.

I really admire how people suffer through the pain of treatment for cancer. Ruth Bader Ginsberg was an outstanding example. Some of the wounded war veterans have to go through a lot, also. Those patients have to have a lot of courage and patience. Best of luck in the contest. judi

Melissa,

I always love to read your posts. I have to tell you that I think you are actually one of the best writers here - and especially in the area of poetry. (Have you written much prose? I don't remember.) It's your poetry that always strikes me. *smile*

There are just a very few people here that I think rise above the 'dabbling' zone. Your pieces are so clever and unusual and so real - Please do more.

One note here, though. *smile* After all that gushing. haha This particular piece reads awkwardly to me. It's absolutely perfect - don't get me wrong, but I would like to suggest an edit - that you are welcome to ignore.

Courageous fortitude...
while patient through pain.
--> and patience through pain

I do think something like that would read better - and be 'punchier'. AND I think readers will still see the pun on 'patient' or 'patients'.

Thanks and good luck!

Hi Robyn... I am so glad you liked this entry. I heartily agreed with your suggestion and made the changes. It does add more punch to the meaning. Thanks, my friend.
By the way, I wrote short prose in 2017-18, but chose poetry in 2019 and started taking classes from Jim during 19... his teaching has truly been a game changer for me. There is a new class starting on the 29th... I cannot wait!

You chose some very strong words and a emotionally evocative picture. It's a little too close to home as I've been taking hubby to his chemo infusions. But we are thankful for insurance and the treatment seems to be working.
Best wishes in the contest!

This is so sad, an emaciated person waiting to die, fully aware of their surroundings, I remember a dear friend dying of terminal cancer, feeling immensely sorry, he testified In church of his great compassion for these others with eyes devoid of hope, he had great joy, two weeks later he died in great pain, but still rejoicing. He still had hope. Beautifully Written, Good luck, blessings

Thank you Roy. Sickness, and terminal sicknesses, are hard to watch. My brother passed away from Pancreatic cancer a few years ago, and his courageous fortitude really impressed me. As a man of God, he was a shining light. :). Thanks again.

You have chosen excellent, powerful words to convey a message about those who remain brave through illness and pain--physical and emotional.
The artwork is very fitting.
