Ciao!

This is an interesting theme and it made me google for more information.

First off Fall is a term mainly used now in America.

I personally find it useful in the short poetic formats because it's only one syllable !

In the past before the third season was called Autumn ( which comes from Latin) or Fall it was called Harvest because then the major part of the population lived in the countryside ...of the land and in that period farmers gathered, picked their crops.

When cities started to become larger (1600) the terms Autumn and Fall began to circulate in England ..

Fall comes from the old English words fiaell and feallan which both mean : fall from a height .

Those who migrated to America started to use preferably Fall...which was considered a more poetic term for the season.

Thank you very much, Tempeste, for your great and informative review. I appreciate everything you shared, because I, too, enjoy googling to research various topics, when I get curious about a topic. Yes, "fall" is handy, because the single-syllable word easily fits into many places, and also rhymes with many English words.
On this subject, I'm remembering a poem I learned about fall, in grade school. So simple, but I don't remember who wrote it:
    "Down, down,
    Yellow and brown,
    The leaves are falling
    To the ground."
I remember that in my childhood, many simple things seemed magical to me -- not in the sense of true magic, but just so full of wonder.
    God bless you, my friend.
    Love, Mary Kay xoxo

Good choice of words for this poem: Leaves, falling. Is that why Autumn is called Fall?

You can't argue with that. Leaves start falling in the "Fall." The trees may not look nice without leaves. The leaves will come back. It is the LIFE CYCLE.

It is a symbol of life and hope.

Thank you very much for your lovely review of my poem, and the five stars. I especially appreciate that as the 15th review, you have bumped my poem into Recognized status! Thank you so much!

Yes, the life cycle of the trees is a symbol of life and hope -- very good to remember. God made them that way, a lesson for us is built right in! Very inspiring.

A very well-written lantern poem about the falling leaves in Autumn suggesting that is why Autumn may be called Fall instead of Autumn most of the time.

This lantern poem, Autumn's Signs, has the proper formatting and describes the season's one activity that seems to be self-explanatory.

I had a bit of a giggle after I read this. One does not usually think of that and it seems so clear to be a question that needs answered once it is presented to you.
