A very well-written 3-5-3 poem. It is a mystery for sure that good people are often tested beyond their goodness when bad things happen to test their attitude towards life.

Nice entry for the 3-5-3 writing prompt contest. Good syllable count and connection between lines. Pretty presentation. The poem flows well. The picture breaks my heart. This poor little boy has a big responsibility when he should be playing.

This is sadly, a well-worn cautionary tale. books have been written about it. Songs have been sung about it. Someone says it hinted at in the bible. I wrote a similar oem about the same query. Why does one water bug make it all the way across the pond and another gets gobbled up/ This would make a good discussion topic for the reader. There would be all kinds of room for projection. Well thought out.

Perhaps these days, we are more aware of it. The poem is paired well with the image. The pained look on the child's face, as she carries her baby sibling on her back, says so much!
As far as "We will never know" is concerned, because of my faith, I would rather say that we will never know, in our lifetime. I would like to believe that when God wipes away our tears, He will also answer some of our most pressing questions -- or that He will give us an understanding beyond our present comprehension. I would really love to know!
I hope your poem does very well in the contest.
