Okay, Bill, so we are not in Kansas anymore. I've never been there so I don't have much to say on a personal level. But a few of my American friends and family who have been there are not all that impressed. You don't sound too impressed either. No offence to anybody from Kansas, mind you. Ulla:)))

It?s flat as a pancake for its entire length.

Hahaha, I know, I was just being very diplomatic about it. Didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings. LOL

I did not know that the hamburger joint started there and why don't they have one now? Surely, there's a McD's? Or does that not count? And I haven't thought of "Dust in the Wind" for a very long time ... Thanks for the fun information!

It?s just the White Castle that?s missing, as far as I know. They may have a Whottaburger though.

The 10th Cavalry's history sounds interesting. I'm thinking it might make an interesting article. It's ironic that Clark Kent grew up in a place known as Smallville, in Kansas. I can understand about forgetting those trips you made as a child. I can't remember details about most of the trips my husband and I took. No White Castles? No problem. You can get the White Castle burgers and the supermarket, anyway. I enjoyed your trip through Kansas. Some interesting details about the state. judi

The history of Kansas as a state is intertwined with the Wild West as you alluded too. I enjoyed reading your account of passing through this state. I know you only have so much space to share. However, I believe Kansasites (?) could write books. I appreciate that you were a teen when this happened and ready for some excitement that this state lacked at the time.
2nd paragraph---Buffalo soldiers were--->(Calvary) was
Thanks for sharing.

Calvary is about Jesus? crucifixion. Cavalry are horse-mounted soldiers.

while I enjoyed reading about Kansas and do not know the how it fits into the rest of the book or the target audience. This does seem a little generic about Kansas. Kansas has a rich history both pro and con. Jayhawkers ravaged the state; Brown vs the Board of Education was a landmark Supreme Court Decision that is still in the news today.
Known for wheat, farm products etc.
Just my opinion, always interested in history. admittedly it did wet my appetite to know more about Kansas besides from the Wizard of OZ and Superman Kansas gets lost somewhere in the middle except in old westerns Were they like Oklahoma part of the dust bowl?

Sorry you thought I didn?t do Kansas justice, Mary. There are a million things about each state. I tend to satirize my experience, not present a legitimate history.
-
Sorry I understand, the history buff in me took over.

Dear Bill, when you can glean this much information from Wikipedia, I am going to have to start reading about all of the states in the USA for myself though it is more fun seeing things through your eyes.

Kansas is an interesting State, and you reviewed it very well and in an interesting way. I did learn much from this post. I like this series of American States.

-That is quite a piece of artwork, Bill.
-I enjoyed your overview of Kansas.
-I liked their music, too, especially
"Dust in the Wind."
-I appreciated the history of its
early settlement of the African
American Regiment and
black refugees.
-I like your ending, too.
-I appreciate your efforts in this project.
-One small thing: drove through Kansa
I think you left the 's' back in Kansas!

Hi, Bill. Well, I must admit I really did learn a lot from this post on Kansas. I had no idea about the black immigration thing, nor the millions of beeves that were handled thru Dodge City.
Your keen sense of humor prevails in this one as always:
"Personally, I drove through Kansas with my folks when I was a kid, but I have no memories of it beyond what I could see from the backseat of a Buick Skylark."
Good job, my friend. :) Bob

I didn't realize Kansas had such a history. It makes me see the state a little differently. Your chapter is well-written, interesting, very educational. I look forward to reading more.
