A well written poem. I love that, in the end, even though a tragedy occurred, his love of riding was honored. I enjoyed the emotion, love and truth in this.

Hi, what a nice read. I can imagine the father getting mad while the mother trying to convince the father to buy a bike. I think that biking is a skill that everyone should know. Agree with the ending of letting the brother bike again at his old age, it is poetic justice. Good luck!

Thankyou for your involved review. Because my father was a lawyer, he used that lense for everything. I spent many hours on probation. We were all so traumatized, there was no, "I told you so's"

Oh Liz, what a horrible story! So your father had a premonition that something bad would happen if he would let you have bicycles. And then...he proved right. Thank God, your brother wasn't killed, but such a long time in coma and evident brain-damage, definitely is a sad story. When my little grandsons of 4 and 5 years old learned to ride bicycles, I was a bit afraid, but now at 5 and 6 years old they race around fearless and free. We forced them though to wear helmets.

This happened before helmets were required. Years after he recovered & realized the what had happened, he went around to schools to encourage them to wear helmets. Finally, it became a law in our state.

Liz, thanks for the answer. Good for the helmets!

Yep... it's always that moment or so in hindsight when we are anticipating the penalty that reality REALLY sets in, isn't it?! ;) What a cool 'story' offering for this challenge, Liz - thanx for sharing! ;) Yvette

Wow, what a great story within a poem, Liz. It showed at the end, that your brother was indeed a grownup and could make his choices. In the beginning it presented your father's dismay. And in the middle the trials, the errors and the devastation that occurred. It truly did affect everyone. Well done.

What a heck of a story poem. It's very well-written start to finish. It's sad what happened to your brother, getting injured so badly, losing a year of his life. I'm glad he healed enough to do what he loves again.

Being the mother and grandmother of so many and six boys in all, it is for love we let them grow and enjoy life. All my son's were extreme skaters. All are the most amazing skaters I have ever seen on pavement and ice. We had our share of spills but no hospital visits. Lots of pads and always a helmet. It's hard, but you have to let go and trust. My boys love me for it. I see you learned this as well. A fine poem, dear Liz.
Sending you my best today as always,

I must confess I don't know how to ride a bicycle. I never learned being to afraid of getting hurt. It's your brother ok? Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writing

Thank you for your involved review. When someone gets a head injury, their personality changes. He iused to be animated like I am but now he has a very flat affect. People who didn't know him before see hin as a little odd but appreciate his kindness. He has a wonderful girlfriend who is able to take him where he is. He might be the only one who could live with her, due to mental illness and she the only one able to live with him. A relationship made in Heaven. Thank you for asking. He never lost any of his intelligence so we have fun doing wordplay.

Thanks for sharing this sobering story! You're all so brave to allow your brother to ride a bike again after that horrible accident! But of course, you do because you love him and trust God for him.
