I love this amusing little piece of whimsy! Especially these two parts of your poem -

" wearing a swordsman's
chainmail into the boardroom battle
to prevent being
eviscerated in a struggle"

and

"unless, of course, you were a Texan,
fixin' to go two-steppin. Then that bolo,
with a shining silver slide,
and turquoise stone"

Fun read - thanks for sharing it with us.

Amen. Where to begin, wearing things to fit in. Not a good idea unless you know where it will end.

Family is special, with a mix of relatives, that are kind, but some are rank.

Then some are so smothering that a special saying resulted. "familiarity breeds contempt."

A balanced must be reached in order to be considered an in law, instead of an outlaw.

Body piercing and tattoos require an interpretation and explanation. Some will exclude the bearer from most tribes.

It is a dance, observe others before going on the floor, or you get the door.

"...no, it is not big foot, it is a tattoo of a buffalo..."

I loved this poem! We often just think of how a woman stresses over choosing just that right dress for the occasion! This definitely brought to mind how the men in the world have these same hard decisions! And I love a good looking tie... and bolos are fun!

And yes.., family ties... definitely another subject for another day!

I thought this was an entertaining piece of writing about how fashion changes over time. What we wear can have a lasting impression on any person we meet which is why it's so important to choose the right clothes. A well written piece. I enjoyed reading it.

I like the modern, hip hop kind of rhythm to this, it really exploded towards the end: 'No one can find a practical purpose for a tie, just like jewelry or cosmetics or a well placed tattoo...perhaps body piercings on body parts unseen...or seen, high heels, or that gentleman's pocket squares.' I like the idea of using this one image of the tie and tying in all these places and situations, like board room discussions and family gatherings, where the tie can be found. I suspect it comes probably from the wearing of cloth that would identify a clan or a tribe in the ancient times. estory

I enjoyed your free verse. Easy to read, not for the rhyme scheme, but for the pleasant cadence and pace. With over 40 years of professional work before I retired, I can certainly relate to the 'tie' theme. Bill

My mother-in-law once gave me a hideous tie for my birthday. On a visit, she remarked, "Glad to see you are using the tie I gave you...I would have never thought of staking tomato plants with it!"

Haha. This is an entertaining piece of poetry dear jlr! I like the way you compare ties with jewelry. A clever poem indeed my friend.

I do think this is a fabulous example of a free verse. The topic of ties is not an easy one. However, you have created a series of scenarios that show the many varied uses for ties. My favorite is the image of a knight in chain mail jousting in a boardroom.

It is an interesting poems about ties. I used to think that wearing a colorful or even controversy tie can project your image of boldness or even sophistication but never think it is a power struggle as well.

It is interesting you tie back with the "Family Tie" in the end so make this poem deeper? But I think it made a diversion that is not necessary.

Well done for a prose poem.
