So far this is the best chapter I read from your interesting encyclopedia. I for once I learned lots of stuff I didn't know about the reindeer. I do hope you published this book, it will be a very useful resource in school for different biology and science projects.

Your grandson must be so proud. Starting each chapter with a poem is lovely and your photos add so much flavor to your descriptions of each animal.

Sandra, I learned more than I could imagine there was to know about reindeer, except...is this the same breed/species/whatever that eats our liriope and hosta here in the south? DO they have a different name/

I think you have a male deer eating your hostas, they are like sweets to them and will eat them all day long if they could. Male deer have antlers similar to the reindeer. Another name for reindeer is caribou, but they live in the north of America. Reindeer go for more for lichen, it's actually called 'reindeer lichen' I haven't seen anywhere that says they eat hostas. I hope that helps. Little monkeys, aren't they. We used to have deer jump our fence and eat all my roses, only the flower. They look so cute, but they are no annoying! LOL.

Hi Sandra, I didn't guess this one. I've seen several reindeer close up in Norway. A local had one with a lead round it's neck just like a dog. It turned and licked him while I watched, thoroughly tame we were able to stroke it while it chewed it's cud like a cow. Another one to add to your book. Keep safe. ~Mel~ xx

What a wonderful format you have for this book. The displays and captions are so well placed. The mixture of poetry, information, art and photos (well placed) are creating an eloquent book.
Your information about how high they can jump and there ability to see ultra violet light, gives us a feeling of why Santa chose them to pull his sleigh. Great job.

What I do know, though, is that Santa Claus, Yuleman in Danish, comes flying from Greenland with his twelve reindeer, Rudolf, being one of them, in the lead, in fact, with his red nose. All this nonsense that he comes from Lapland is just not true. No, we Danes know better. So there! LOL.

Amazing animals. So there was some truth to Rudolph after all. Maybe the author saw one soaring over a 9 foot fence and gave him the idea of flying. I didn't know about the red nose, either. After a day, babies can run faster than an Olympic runner!

Not only is it informative, but the images add great interest, too. I did not know about how antlers were eaten by other animals--wow--those animals must have sharp teeth.
