This is a heartwarming story-in-a-poem about what a young boy learned from his grandpa about how to endure Life's difficulties.

Winding the stem of his treasured gold Hamilton Railway Special watch received when he retired, his grandpa used doing so as a metaphor for taking a moment to tighten resolve to persevere through such circumstances.

Rather than leaving the precious watch to his grandson, this wise old man gave it to him upon his graduation, creating a solemn but loving moment the young man would always remember.

In consequence, the narrator carries on the tradition with his own grandchildren by telling them about what Life has taught him.

Superb, and aptly illustrated with a photo of that beautiful watch.

Three easily-fixed items not affecting the rating:

Stanza 1, line 3: giant of man's
Recommended: giant man's -OR- giant of a man's

St 2, ln 3: barks => bark's
[Singular possessive needed.]

St 8, ln 2: Railroad => Railway
[To match what is on the watch.]

This is excellent! Not only did you recieve a prized possession, but a life lesson that will far outlast a watch. And a lesson of that value will live a thousand years, if treasured and passed along the way.
There were no corrections needed. This is an excellent contest entry.
Blessings,
Deb

A heart warming story of the story of a watch and the advice that came with it when given that watch at graduation. A traditional story of a grand dad passing advice down the generations. Good luck in the prompt. ~Mel~

This is a sentimental poem about the love of a boy for his grandpa, who always gave him good advice. The picture is perfect for this piece. The free verse style works well here.

Your beautiful tribute to your grandfather moved me immensely this morning. I literally got "goose bumps" when I read the verse where he gave you his watch
I can picture you sitting there now with the watch and your grandkids, as proud of them as he was of you. I am blessed with seven wonderful grandkids and treasure every moment with them.
You have tied three generations together in this memorable and sentimental poem - so well done - this is a SIX star free verse contest entry.
In addition to the SIX stars, you have my contest vote! Thank you for sharing this very moving and touching story with all of us here at FanStory.

It's about much more than just a watch. It's the wisdom of the aged being passed down through the generations. Nothing googled online can help us more than tried and true life experience. Well said. Well done.

I enjoyed your story about how grandpa would tell you lessons in life and wind up his watch. What a wonderful graduation gift when he gave you his watch. The fact that you still have the watch and carrying on the tradition of telling your grandchildren life's lessons using the watch that same watch. Nice story but I want to know where your grandpa's watch was bought because that thing has lasted an eternity! LOL Good luck with the contest~

    These Hamilton Railroad Specials are very highly crafted watches. My grandfather worked for the railroad for 32 years and retired in 1956
    this watch is 54 years new and I have only had to had the stem replaced. Watch crafters oogle and ahh when the see it .

This is a touching entry for the Free Verse Poetry Contest. Your slow and gentle approach, painting a picture of the scene, real as life, was the perfect lead-in. It draws the reader in to your tale of love and respect, sharing the lessons you were taught. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Good luck in the contest.
