Good luck in the Share Your Story contest. I loved this little story from your life. I didn't start to read books until I was 37 ( critically injured in a traffic accident - flat on my back, bored with TV.) So glad I did. My dad said to me, "you can travel the world in books." Now, I don't know what I would do with out a book or two. Thanks for sharing a touching story.

Well, he associated reading with being told to do something he couldn't or wouldn't. However, I believe he knew the basics and needed someone to take interest in him not what he could or couldn't do. I enjoyed your contest entry. You did a good job with e prompt. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.

I really enjoyed reading this story. Teachers must teach hundreds of children in their careers, I often wonder if they remember everyone they've taught, or if it's a small number that stand out in their mind. Lazarus sounds like a really special kid, it was great to read how you bonded with him over that summer and how he eventually grew to love reading. A really well written piece. what a wonderful story. And realistically told, especially as you, the teacher, after all your efforts, including the book you gave him, still weren't sure exactly which combination of things enabled Lasarus to read.
