Well, this is supposed to be anonymous, but I think most of the site will now who is writing this. It's a very good entry for the contest and the horror of it all shines right through. Sometimes I think it's worse for those who stay at home. My daughter's father was away in the Gulf during the Gulf war in 1991 and I didn't get much sleep during that time and I still had to go flying and look after our little daughter. Like you, he came back in one piece. Good. Luck. Ulla:)))

Some men are born heroes, and some are scared of their own shadow, Mark was a born hero. It always seems to me that the good people on Earth die early, while the scum live forever. I felt so sad that he died that way, but he saved you all. I hope he received a posthumous medal for his courageous actions. Well done, a gripping read. Good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

Your story it's waving in such a witty and alert tone. The subject is very sad,I don't like wars, but your narrations brings a different perspective on that dangerous life. There where several passages that made me laugh, among them this one: "Try talking with the guerrillas before shooting 'em, because I bet ya they surrender to maintain their sanity. Now, get along to commando school and Godspeed." Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest

War is not a pleasant site or sound. I've had many uncles, relatives who have served the military. One of them was assigned to a base, later to war. He received a shrapnel and the rest of his life was spent in a veteran hospital. Enjoyed your story. Congratulation on being a veteran.

A "SALUTE!" to you for your true story. It is the best war story I've read on FS. There are so many aspects about it that makes it truly wonderful, but poignant, at the same time.

The art choice is perfect. Readers immediately know that what follows will be an in-depth story and are not disappointed. Though all wars are horrific, you did an AWESOME job with your entry, Mystery Author. Your descriptive words and phrases put readers right in the midst of the story, whether it is on the battlefield, in the doctor's office, or in the helicopter. I love the way you described the chopper as an 'eggbeater.'

The detailed descriptions of the pilot maneuvering the chopper to avoid the missile was intense. I could see all of the actions and feel the determination of the pilot to get out of its path. Throughout it all, the dialogue was riveting. Though I've not 'been there, done that,' I felt like I was right there at that moment.

I could imagine the dialogue among the characters in the different scenes as true to their personality. Even in the face of extreme danger, that comes through because, it is a part of each of them. The Smoky Mountain dialect is refreshing in its appeal. It is a true reflection of John's personality. That is evident when he is speaking with the medical doctors, his commandos, and his flashbacks when he was at home with Grandma and other family. The bravery exhibited by Mark was well-expressed. I believe the commandos are a tight-knit group who would act as he did for his 'brothers.'

The funeral scene, though sad, shows how the military honors their fallen heroes. It is a tear-jerker to imagine Mark's widow receiving the flag and passing it to their son. Military families have a bond that is strong in ways that non-military people may not understand always.

John stated he wanted to be home for Christmas. With the ending, he reached that goal in a way he knew in the back of his mind may be true. He will always be 'an angel on the Christmas tree.'

This true story could ONLY be written by one who has been in the trenches and knows first-hand about everything included in this story. A "SALUTE!" Mystery Author for your service and for sharing this amazing story. Best wishes for winning this contest.
Respectfully with Love and Admiration,
Laura Jan

Truly, a soldier's death in the battlefield is shown so expressively, in the folds of old glory, the soldier thanks God and wishes to become an Angel on the Christmas tree; I have enjoyed the realistic dialogues; well said, well done; enjoyed the read; thank you for sharing this; keep writing. Good luck for the contest. ALCREATOR

Nice story, you did a good job of recreating what I imagine is the macho atmosphere in a war zone. Your characters are crazy and funny. Thanks for sharing this and have a really great day

6 stars here!! I'm speechless! This is brilliant. I feel guilty for being so entertained by the perfection of the writing here, while I know I am walking on holy ground. It is written "as one having authority and not as the scribes."
Thank you so much for your service. I am humbled in your presence through this writing.
Well done soldier!
