Excellent imagery here, and I really liked reading this. It evoked feelings of walking through nature and pondering. Keep up the good work. Hopefully you have more like this.

This is lovely. I like the assonance and alliteration in this beautifully written free verse poem. I'm quite familiar with the Rose Candle as we observe the same in the Episcopal Church (your C&E). 8-)

Going Home
by tfawcus

Hello, Tony,

A beautiful free verse poem entry for the Free Verse Poetry Contest. A beautiful poem about going home and traditions. I went to Catholic school when I was a child. I have a mix bag of memories...good and bad. I loved the smell of myrrh and frankincense incense, and the Tiffany glass windows. Well done my friend.

Your free verse is so well chiseled that it doesn't feel like free verse at all - mostly because of the word order like "leaf mould damp" and "hips of rose."
My church background doesn't follow liturgy so I appreciate learning about the "rose candle" of Advent. (I liked the "rose rimmed eye"). There's a deep and beautiful reflection in your poem and a turning back to home and to reconnecting with the Holy.

I never really experienced the church as a young, although at 17 I tried to search for God in a local Presbyterian church, but discovered God wasn't there. But He found me in my car coming home from work, that's the best of Damascus road experiences, no voices of men to confuse one. Beautifully written, one got that old feeling of familiar surrounds, the language of experience. Beautifully written Tony, blessings, Roy

You wrote a lovely poem. It describes some beauty but I feel sadness from it. You did an excellent job and good luck in the Free Verse Contest. Shirley

A very well-written free verse poem about going home that we need sometimes to realize once again where we came from and where we are now to see the progress we made in life.

This is an extremely emotive poem for the third Sunday in advent. The feeling that it is a very special day to you comes across clearly, as does the religious connotation of the day. Congratulations.
