I think of a shepherdess as standing on a hill in a Sunday school story book, not the lonely, gloomy shepherdess in this poem. It took several readings to grasp this mood because of my prior mindset. It portrays a very lonely person, which is probably more accurate than my Sunday school memory. It is a very good description of loneliness.

Elon: a friend showed me a very old picture, very gloomy, dark, some sheep, a dog and the shepherdess turned away from her animal companions, her head down. From that, I wrote this poem. It was another time long ago when women had few choices. They did not live in Sunday school story books! Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts with me. Linda

You have a striking picture here to accompany your poem. So much has been written about the bucolic shepherdess, and she is generally represented in pastel shades, in flowing robes and with a misty, faraway expression in her eye. Your poem is very much closer to the reality. It would be a hard life indeed. Sometimes we need bringing back down to earth!

Tony: a friend showed me a picture from long ago, dark, gloomy, some sheep, a dog and a women with head bowed. It did not appear that she had or ever would have a bright, fairy tale life. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts with me. Keep safe! Linda

I just wrote a great review for this terrific poem and it disappeared! I'll try to remember what I said, other than that it was terrific. I think I used the word perfect, too. And said that I loved the last line (the question). It surely made me stop and think. I enjoyed your short bio; especially was taken aback by the statement, "just came out of the pen..." I thought you meant that you had been in prison! Gave me quite a laugh...At any rate, you wrote a beautiful poem. OUTSTANDING, in fact!!

A lovely piece of writing about the unhappiness of the Shepherdess tending the flock. I did not see any errors during my read. Great job. Have a wonderful day. Shirley

You set the scene well with your words of compassion and insight. Think of how many people in this world are stuck in jobs they were born into so to speak. Kids who were just expected to work in the same factory where their parents worked to kids who are expected to become doctors like their father and grandfather and hate doing what they are "stuck" doing. I'm touched by this because I could have been that shepherd girl.

Your words paint a picture of a girl standing on a hill with her sheep all around. She is lonely and this shows by her demina and the way she moves. Thank you for sharing and stay safe.

Hello Linda,
You have BEAUTIFULLY painted the Shepherdess' picture with your lucid words. It's an art, and worth appreciating indeed!
Her life, feelings, and the surroundings are TRANSPARENTLY visible.
Smooth and enchanting flow throughout from the beginning to the end
1st two lines of the 1st Stanza and last three lines of the 3rd Stanza are particularly noteworthy.
LAUDABLE.

It is a sad poem, but some lives are sad. You brought focus to the causation at the end, which may be the most important thing to think about. Poor gal. Not even the dog to keep her company. My house is CROWDED with COVID, kid and grandkids, their pets, me and my hubby. But I'm grateful for it. I know there are a lot of grannies out there who aren't getting to have a crowd now.
Poor gal! I keep thinking of her...
Good poem. :)
Blessings and thank you, Linda,
Deb

This is quite a charming and well written poem. The image and color scheme are effective complements to the words. It is a thoughtful and interesting portrait of a shepherdess.
