Hi Liz,
So, this guy is trying to talk himself into killing his wife. Actually, he's already planned it, weighed the positives and negatives...
"A quick, clean shot to the back of the head, is really all that's necessary."
But then, in the very same paragraph, he admits to being a coward. He has (already) hired an assassin...
"My guy assures me it'll be over before she even knows what's hit her."
Does she deserve it? Well, he describes the scenario of her infidelity...
" she goes out on the town, every damned night, flitting around, like a floozy, meets some guy, some boozing barfly, and decides to run off with the loser, to Texas! and is going to take the kids, not to mention his hard-earned paycheck for child support, and he'll probably never, ever, see his kids again, how the hell can he afford to fly to Texas when the bitch has taken all his money?"
He even knows her boyfriend's name...
"for all he knows this soon-to-be-step-daddy Stevie is an effing pervert who will fiddle around with his poor defenseless boys~"
Bottom line, do you think the idea to kill his wife sprang from watching 20-20 or Dateline? Why not just hop in the car and drive, with no particular destination? Let Stevie take over.
Enjoyable read, letting us into the mind of a murderer who's justifying the deed. Bravo! Thanks for sharing his predicament... for when his wife is dead, he's the prime suspect! Then he will have to get out of Dodge!
Gordon Lightfoot wrote a song about getting out of Dodge... have a listen.

You got me the magic #26--thanks for that! It is disturbing that killers can so easily justify themselves--and I find it unsettling that I can so effortlessly conjure such monstrous characters!

Thanks for stopping by. I recall your stupendous gritty story -- I read several chapters back when.

I'm not an active member -- I keep up with fans and occasionally repromote work from 202 with the $$ I accrue from sporadic reviewing. Cheers. LIZ

I'm always happy to see an encore presentation of a post I missed the first go 'round...

Very darkly funny. Stephen King would appreciate the twist!

There's always that slippery slope to psychosis I guess...

Especially if one binge watches enough crime shows!

Or, say, listens to that podcast that I fall asleep to everynight.... Crime Junkies!

Heck yeah!

Fairytales for the vengeful!

Bullseye!

(The post, I mean!)

It is indeed disturbing that killers can so easily justify themselves--and I find it unsettling that I can so effortlessly conjure such monstrous characters! As to dark humor--my editor on medium construed it as a dry British comedy, whereas I conceived it as an escalation of rage. Whichever works for you!

    Hmmm. Dry British Comedy?

    Rageful for sure!

Hi Liz,
I was wondering if perhaps this was going to end the way it did. We're left wondering what dastardly deed the poor wife did to deserve death. I've always been amazed at the stories I've heard of a person killing their spouse instead of just getting a divorce. It would seem to take a lot more courage to off someone than it would to just sign some divorce papers. Maybe I'm too naive. I've been married fifty years, and though there have been times I've wondered how we could possible survive another day together, divorce was never a serious consideration, much less murder. Well done gal. As always, very entertaining.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

    Ahh Liz,
I believe there is a dark side in all of us. Most of the time we're pretty good about keeping it hidden. I think it was Robert Fulghum who mentioned how disturbing it would be to have all of our thoughts projected on a movie screen for everyone to see. Scary thought.

Ironic thar what bonded the narrator and his wife were brutal murder stories. Great details here.
This 'devoted' husband reveals what's going on is his own marriage. But he's not going to kill his cheating wife. No, he won't be guilty of such a crime. Hiring a hit man will do the trick.

Liz,

Oh, yeah. He didn't fool me one bit. Lt Kenda says everyone is capable of murder -- EVERYONE-- given the right set of circumstances.

I picked up on his 'never, ever, evers' right away. It's not good to swear you'd never do something - it's a pretty sure bet you'll be eating some words.

EX: "Will you just LOOK at the way that child is behaving?! And in public! Her mother is right there watching and not doing one thing. Well. You mark my words, Edith. My child, if I ever have one, will NEVER act like that. Hmph!"
--> Yep, the winds are listening, sister. And you can put all your money on it - one day, in the near future, some product of your loins will behave as bad OR WORSE than anything you just saw. Yes. In public. YUM!

hahaha

Nice to see you!

This is an interesting soliloquy, Liz. You've written well, with the continued referral to 'Jane and I', which gives clue to what is going on. But still, the final line is shocking! Well done.

Hello Liz,
I enjoyed reading your piece.
Loved the smart turning point right at the end - I was expecting 'something', but not that!
Well written and entertaining - it's good to be reading you again. I've been offsite for a while, so this was a nice 'welcome back' waiting for me in my message box!
Best wishes as always, Debra :)

"Love is spending the rest of your life with someone you want to kill and not doing it because you'd miss them." Or, they might be the only one left who still wants to have sex with us, even with the lights off. It's always a pleasure, my dear! Thanks for sharing.
