When young, the only thing one could do would read, particularly towards the end of summer school holidays, when the steam started to go out of them. Although my reading could hardly be termed sophisticated. Although I read Treasure island, Swiss family Robinson, even Lord of the flies, which was a wake, mum never read to us, but my passion for writing didn't come till my 40s. But whatever brings us through gateEh? Brilliant article my friend, blessings Roy

My passion for writing also came later in life. One of the exercises I do is when I read something I try to think of ways I would do it differently, not better, just different. Thank you very much for reading and reviewing my.

I too grew up like you did with a mother instilling the love of books.

Five books I would take with me would be the ASV Bible, Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon, any book by L'amour, Grisham, and Ann Rule.

I have always loved reading. When I was a young lad, I'd read whatever I could get my hands on. I'd read dictionaries, encyclopedias, and anything else I could get. I once had so many books that I started reading them two and three at a time. I really like what you've presented here and enjoyed reading this inspirational and well written work. Well done!

This account is a great tribute to your love for reading books. I think most of us writers on FanStory can relate wholeheartedly to your love of literature. It's hard to end up writing things without loving the written word. Congratulations on memorizing all those Bible verses :-)

Some minor errors:

One of the lists I would have submitted back the was...
-->
One of the lists I would have submitted back then was...

Your last sentence needs a period at the end.

I took note of the favorites you mentioned, so that I can look them up and read them one day. I doubt I'll find "that Bible story book," but we had one of our own as children, and I have read the original version repeatedly -- although we can never really get enough of it. I'll continue to memorize verses.
Thanks for sharing your story.

Your story, and I must admit, all the other contributor's stories, follow the same trail. Parental guidance and modeling of reading, the progression from kid books through young adult literature, and finding a genre that facilitated one's desire to know a story. Your L'amour books, a favorite of mine too, led me to read Zane Grey for comparison, and on to The Executioner, which married into my military life as well. Enjoyed your essay.

I guess if something works we should stick with it with parents handing us the keys to the kingdom. I never got into the executioner, but I did like the Shadow. Thanks for reading and reviewing my work.

I enjoyed yor trip through the books you read and loved and I didn't have to leave my chair. Your words are supported by real life facts (your life) which makes each title more special. Thank you for including the names, authors, and why their books were special. Thank your mother for instilling a love of books in you at a young age. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully, Jan

Totally enjoyed your story! Like you, my mother read to us constantly. I was lucky to have two grandmothers who did the same. I've made a couple of suggestions below.

The second 'kids' in first paragraph is an echo and a little redundant (just my opinion)
'she would read more' drop would, makes sentence passive. Why not 'she read more'?
'Bible stories for learning the most Bible verses at Vacation Bible School.' You've got a Bible echo going. Drop the second one and just say verses. You've already established bible.
submitted back the was (think you meant then, not the)

Neat little analysis of the importance of reading young, and a good list of Five Books for that deserted island. I think we had "Centennial" by Michener in the house for a long time but not sure if it is still around. I grew up with a Bible storybook with the most amazing artistic illustrations that I ended up buying a copy for everyone in a church class ages 9 to 11. As soon as you mentioned "Lonesome Dove" I went over and looked up actor Rick(y) Schroder who was in "Return to Lonesome Dove" miniseries back in 1993. Thanks for sharing!

I've been enjoying reading entrants for this. It's great to read about what turned folk on to books. This is an excellent entry. Loved the part about being a 'cowboy snob', lol. Good luck in the contest.
