Only in Australia. Unexpected and a heartwarming resolution. I lived in the hills behind Perth years ago and used to feed "Jacko" every day. My wife was terrified of him. DJ

Oh, what a great flash offering, L-M -- love the fact that we get to hear the events from the thoughts of the sister... really works well! :) Thanx for sharing and best of luck! ;) Yvette

Hi Lisa, you fooled me with this one. I didn't know Australians were crass... jk... Did you know the blue pixel? She was a very good writer from Australia. But she hasn't been in FS for quite a while now. I know she wasn't crass ... again, jk.
I think I've heard the kookaburra, so I've got an idea what they sound like.
I'm wondering, though, why did you write this in first person? I find it easier to understand in third person. just wondering~
This is a good entry for the flash fiction contest. Nice twist in there! Good Luck!
Cheers

A very well-written heartfelt and fun poem. When we do not know a country well we can be mistaken by something like this and thought the bird sounds is rude laughter from humans.

Thanks for reviewing! Kookaburras often fool people.

I love it! Great story, LisaMay. You feel really bad for the sister, listening to the rude, laughing people at the funeral, but of course there's a punchline -- it's a bunch of "laughing" birds -- kookaburras! What a cool bird. I'm glad I didn't read your Notes before reading the story. I like being surprised.

I'm glad they put the notes at the end rather than the beginning.
    Thanks for your supportive comments!

Lol. So the laughter came not from people but from the kookaburras! I would will have look them up to hear that sound. Enjoyed the story as you kept us intrigued as to who would be so disrespectful at a funeral. Best wishes in the contest!

Lisa,

This is a delightful contest entry! You did a great job of building up Mavis' frustration and setting the scene at the funeral. Did not see the surprise ending coming since I did not know kookaburra sound like that. Well done!!
Blessings,
Beth

Thanks for your comments. Kookaburras are delightful birds - they seem so happy, if somewhat irreverent.

LOL That's cute and embarrassing to the sister I would guess when she realized that all the mourners standing behind her had gotten a show of her chastizing those making the imbecile laughter. To find out she had been yelling at a bunch of birds!
great job!
Patty

A cheeky entry for the flash you have here. I admire Australia and New Zealand. My son has been there on holiday but I can only admire his photographs. A weird bird lives in my yard and has this same quality about him. Maybe it's a she-creature. I'm not sure. A fun one!! Sending you my best today as always, and best wishes for the contest,
Sal xoxo

Congratulations. You caught me totally off guard with that surprise ending. I'd written a poem about inappropriate laughter at a funeral, and I read your story curious to see if you resolved the situation similarly to the way I did. Let's just say our endings couldn't have been more different. Yours was charming and endearing, and could, in no way, have been foreseen earlier in your story. Your story is very intelligent, very original and very sweet.
