What a great story, Liz, and it could be a true one, in some ways. Friends are a mix, I have 'friends' who are there when all is fine, but if I was in trouble, they'd run the 2 minute mile to get away. I also have friends who I might not see for months at a time, but if I rang them and said, help, they'd be at my house before I'd finished talking.
I have found friends on here, FS, and I mean that. They are real friends even though we've never met each other. I don't know if you knew Phyllis Stewart, she died earlier this year. We really were friends, in all sense of the word. She sent a message to me before she died so I was prepared. I have other real friends on here, who are better than any living around the corner. Friendship is different things to different people. I value the few I have. That man who wasn't a Christian counselor, was amazing, he was a friend to her in her need. That is a friend. I enjoyed reading this, Liz. Well done. :)) Sandra xxx

Thank you, Sandra, for your eloquent commentary. I feel the same about StoryLand friends--there are several I have come to know intimately via heartfelt communication in reviews/replies to ? etc. etc. (Much obliged for the virtual blue pending==you're reader #15)

I've found out over the years that all those friends we think we have are only there when they need us. But when we could use them, they are
cautiously unavailable. And that's just examining those around me. As I would never trust any of them with confidential information anyway. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I very much like your poem. It is a grand combination of wit and seriousness. At its heart, lie the truth about the kinds of friendships that exist. I think it's really nice that at the end, the narrator rises to beome a good friend herself.
The Dianna Booher part that defined various friendships was interesting.
It was the Auburn and the Christian counselor interaction that I will most remember.
Fine job.

Greyson--you will be wise to heed my advice lest you get suspended from this site: When you "write" a review it is unacceptable to paste in canned comments--you have cloned your words four times today just for me and I noted you did the same for others. At the very least, the site administrator will soon catch on and remove the $$$ credits that you've "earned." He will thereafter issue a warning, which if you ignore may result in your being banned.

I buoyant write with some clever examples in life of friendships and how some are fickle, some are long lasting and some are not worth the title. I have few friends, but they are reliable and step up when the chips are down. I befriended my neighbour once, she was lonely and I made her some lunch. When she refused to leave my house after accepting my hospitality, I lost respect for her and wouldn't let her in again! Ha ha ha, this is a true story Elizabeth. We stay friends until someone crosses the line. Going that extra mile for friends is a fine example of true friendships, much enjoyed, your writes are always entertaining, love Dolly x

You did a good job with your 'friend' thoughts and feelings, Liz. I liked what you had to say about that word. You did not include 'friend' as in Facebook. I like what you shared about the counselor as to what 'real' friends do and how they act as opposed to 'friends.' Those are just 'friends' of convenience.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

I liked how you had this great perspective on friendship through these dictionary deffinitions in the first part, that really made friendship seem so much an excersize in mechanics. Then you delve into a real life situation where standing by your friend in a time of great trouble illustrates the emotional investment. In the end, I think this life is a struggle to learn how to love people other people and that includes when they need our help. It is in giving ourselves away that we move beyond the cerebral deffinitions of life and truly discover ourselves. Lots of personality and sense of humor in your writing as always. estory

This was an excellent commentary/humorous piece about friendship. Perhaps my generation has a more casual approach to friendship as I often go long times without speaking to my closest friends but what makes us close is that when we do catch up it's like we were never apart. Great work on this piece and thanks for sharing. Later daze.

So this was published before? What a remarkable story of friendship! I loved the pre-story of the woman who mis-dialed and got a caring man who listened like the best of friends. I was blown away about Lauren's story - could that many things happen all at once? I thought it was like the beginning of the book of Job!

This is a re-promotion--only few people read it back in Feb. The second part is fabricated per the footnote. Glad you like it. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers. LIZ
