A very well-written heartfelt and thought-provoking poem. Our main task as parents are to reach our children the wisdom of life we received from our parents and to explore life for more insight.

Hello Doug, this is a lovely message in a poem for your daughter. Your words are lovely. I particularly like -
But what you do with it,
what you accomplish,
who you affect in this world,
with your gifts-

that is,
and will be,
the measure of you........... But we love them regardless - lovely poem from you and a lovely read this miserable wet morning. Dorothy x

I would give this six stars if I still had any. This is what I would love to see all parents say to all children. The "old soul" may not apply to all. My youngest definitely was one, but all four of them are/were good souls. Tori is blessed to have such a sensitive loving father.

That is a great question you have asked here...I am young, unmarried and not a parent also...all I can say is that we still have to keep trying to be there for the children whether they want us to or not! Not to suffocate or overwhelm them but only to let them know that we are always by their side whenever they might need a shoulder to lean on!

Oh, I love this. Throughout the poem, I kept thinking of my own relationship with my mother over the years, and the great similarities between our conversations and some of the declarations in your loving, nurturing, affirming, liberating poem. Then I reached the end and realized that you are her father!
That last thought is priceless:
"Though,
regardless,
your father knows
your measure
is infinite."

I think it's been so long since I read your lovely poem, that in the exchange of conversation, I had to go back to refresh my memory. Your poem is beautiful, indeed. And now I realize one of the reasons why I mistook your voice as female, at first -- I came from a broken home, and was raised primarily by my Mom. Though I had weekly contact with my Dad, it's not the same as living under the same roof. I was missing the consistent, nurturing presence of a father figure on a daily basis. Your daughter is indeed blessed to have your loving and affirming presence in her life! Every daughter needs this kind of validation from her father. I believe it can help to save her from some potential mistakes and heartaches trying to find validation from men in other ways, later on. God bless you both.

I find this poem offering very Interesting and appealing to the Business side of me. I must note while very fitting for children there was a bit of disappointment for me personally due to the lack of direction or obscured spiritual side to it for children's messaging and development. Understanding where about our total world view can benefit our Children too. Blessings and God's Blessings to you and your family.
