I think this is a good entry for the Non-Fiction Writing Contest.
This short story of learning chess and life lessons from Dad is well told.
Well done and I wish you luck with the contest.

:You are very lucky to have had a father like that. My father loved me and seemed to be proud of me but he left the teaching to my mother and my teachers. I guess he did teach me to play checkers and dominoes but I don't remember any serious conversations. This is a nicely written tribute to your father.

You truly had a wonderful and unusual father. You are one of the lucky ones - you and your siblings. It's unusual for a dad to spend this much quality and thinking time with is kids.
Good story.

Hello Marjon, a TGIFriday to you. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I have to say I am envious of you, I wish I had a father who not only spent time with me, but taught me important life lessons. All he taught was abuse and neglect. Consider yourself lucky, good job and good luck in the contest.

You have many reasons to be grateful to your dad for the many things he taught you to do and encouraged you to do. What wonderful memories of meaningful discussions and true bonding between generations. Thank you for sharing this.

Your father was a very wise man in more ways than one -- so glad you had those 'roots' with him and times you shall never forget... and hopefully pass along some day! :) Thanx for sharing and best of luck! ;)

Hello, Marjon Van Bruggen,

Wow, you had a remarkable father. I like the way he shaped you to be a free thinker with valuable education, both, practical and critical. It took you two years to learn how to beat your dad but you never gave up. Well, the point was not to beat your dad but to never give up.

Well done,

Gypsy

Your father sounds like a wise man. Not only did he teach you how to play chess, but he found a way to spend time with each child which opened up other opportunities to instruct and help them.
