To liken Alzheimer's to weather changes this the spot for me because as with our mood, Alzheimer's can destroy our soul as we become an empty shell as we leave the earth in mind but not in body, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I'm sorry for your loss. Alzheimer's is a nasty disease. We had a son who died from Huntington's Disease at the age of 35 and I've done a lot of poetry and stories about it. I've always said that writing is my therapy. Well, I did enjoy your poem. I look forward to reading more of your work.
God bless!
Patty

This is a heart-wrenching poem about a heart-wrenching situation. I have not personally had to deal with it, but you describe it well. Hopefully this poem, here and the others if you're able to get them published, will help bring attention and understanding. Have you checked into publishing with CreateSpace. I've used them and it didn't cost anything. Good luck and God Bless.

No need - happy to help. I'm planning to look at Create Space again when I publish my novel I'm sharing here, Soul Whispers. Hoping it's still free :) Take care.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

This is a superb free verse poem about the devastation of alzheimer's disease. Your use of metaphor to explain the onset arriving like a ghost that glares on white snow so apt to illustrate the degeneration's sudden and terribly disorienting arrival. Leaves dropping from trees showing the disappearance of memories as the brain disintegrates and washes all distinguished thoughts into a sea of blue.

The night terrors and rage that arrive in later stages of the disease, so very, very difficult for the caregiver who is most often a spouse or child.

I think it's an exceptional poem that many will be able to relate to on a deep, visceral and also intuitive level.

Many thanks for sharing. :)

I am so sorry you had to deal with this devastating illness. Thank you for your willingness to share your experience for the benefit of others. I admired your comparison to "winter bareness" and your vivid descriptions of your reactions plus your use of alliteration to intensify the images. Warm regards- Joan

Joan, what a wonderful comment! You mention the metaphores and the alliterations used in this poem and I am very pleased about that. Thank you so much.

It is good you find release in poetically expressing how it affects you as well as your husband. My grandmother suffered with dementia, a form of the disease, and it was the saddest thing to watch her change into someone that could not process any memory past when my mom and uncle were children. And it only got worse with decorating her face with makeup in all the wrong places and how mean and childlike she became. I can understand your sorrow. xoxo

To lose someone to Alzheimer's is like death with the warmth of the memory remaining, as a constant reminder of what once was. I spoke of this yesterday at our fellowship of the spirit and the soul being missing but the remains left behind. It's then one starts wondering why the body hasn't gone with it, at least there's closure in that. Beautifully written my friend, I would love to offer comfort, I can but empathise. Blessings Roy.

I wrote a column about an Alzheimer's daycare center and was enlightened to some degree but wish there was more writing out there like your poem that helps the uninformed reader feel the experience. Have you looked at lulu. Com , that prints on demand? I used them for my book.

Susan, what a wonderful comment on Blue-hued and what a good advise. I did not look at Lulu's possibilities, because up till now I felt too insecure about the quality of what I have to offer. After the really good reactions here, this insecurity is diminishing somewhat. I thought of posting another few of this series here, just to see what happens. And then...holding my breath...I'll jump into the deep.

The unbelievable thing is that it doesn?t cost a cent! Go for it. My book is A Word?s Worth, a collection of my columns on Amazon.

Really unbelievable! I had the impression that publicing was a rather costly affair. I'll look in to it. Thanks again!

This was recommended by a friend who had seven books published by them. You do have to work on your own marketing, but I?m sure you can tap into Alzheimer?s organizations to help you.
