I am sorry I missed this the first time around. I don't know how I did it. I was a fan in 2020. Maybe I was on vacation or something. Anyway, I did enjoy reading. I have done two declutterings of my house and still need to do more.

Thanks for stopping by, Barbara. Seems everybody can relate. I have no problem as to being ruthless with other people's clutter; alas, I don't practice what I preach. I wish I could take credit for that expression Rearranging the Deck Chairs on the Titanic--my friend said it and I thought it was clever--but he didn't originate it--Google makes that clear. Cheers. Hi Liz,
I'm going to get my wife to read this one. We have a lot of de-cluttering to do! And she doesn't like to throw anything out. Even me! There's lots of good advice here. I'm sure there is a script waiting to be written where the husband wants to toss, and the wife says, "Don't touch it, if you know what's good for you!"
You've written the usual comedy into your piece. You're pretty good at that. Just look at that sly grin in your Fanstory photo!
Nicely penned! Good advice. Great laughs!
Hugs,
Kimbob

I like your story. I'm of the mind set that my kids can clean out my house and storage after I'm gone. That way, I don't have to feel guilty about throwing things out that shouldn't be. You did a great job. Enjoy your day. Shirley

I did the math. No, I didn't, GOOGLE did the math, and 5,000 gallons equals 668.402778 cubic feet. Just so you now I was paying attention...also that I need Goggle to do my math. Oh right...you weren't being literal! It's my OCD. I have to do what I'm told..

That is, unless, what I'm told is to get rid of my trash/treasure/trash--(depending on my mood, the day, and who I'm describing it to)

Lucky thing I read this. It seems MUCH easier than that sledge hammer I saw at Rockys and was planning on purchasing for just those days when I'm ready to smash --oh -- say fifty things to smithereens! (Fifty things per hour that is)

Then again, I could smash them and then I could fit LOTS more into those Hefty, Hefty Cinch Sacks!

(This would also work for getting rid of the remains of my ex husband...if only I'd had the nerve to DO to him what I dreamt all those years!)

CLEARLY I found this hysterical. And deeply disturbing since I suffer from the same malady... except for the upsetting part (see your first sentence)--- I haven't been 100 pounds since I was twelve!)

Okay, I'm laughing!

We decluttered significantly when we downsized, and it's mostly not bad. But I do have some extra clothes - just in case I become waif-like again! Love the humorous, and witty, tone, and the way you focus on a human weaknessand make us laugh at ourselves. Well done.

This piece of writing is a humorous take on the challenges of decluttering and finding ways to deal with excess possessions. The author provides a list of advice on what to keep or discard but acknowledges that it can be difficult to follow. They then present a series of humorous and unconventional "cheats" for de-cluttering, including hiding clutter in the basement, using hefty bags, and leaving it out for trash pickup. Overall, the tone is lighthearted and sarcastic, but the underlying message is that decluttering can be a difficult process.

Your OUT list is a masterpiece. This is a fun read, a cautionary tale, and a self-help article. Cleverly written. engaging, and timely for a population top heavy with baby boomers.

I had a blast with this one! Esp. the fantasy of tossing the lot accidentally-on-purpose. Thanks for stopping by. Always a pleasure!

I definitely needed some advice like this about ten years ago, to help me adapt to new severely reduced living space. In the absence of a large basement I lived for the duration with stuff i still wanted stored in attractive bags hidden behind doors or the sofa, but it was hard work. now it's really becoming tough as i'm in an even smaller space. I am just trying not to see the clutter at the moment.
