What an awful lady! Thank goodness all grandmothers aren't like that. Your poor mother, and you. I hope your mother was able to get away from her and set up a happy home for you and her. This is a heartbreaking true story, I'd love it if you won, that would make grandmother turn in her grave!! lol. Well done and good luck! :)) Sandra xx

Sandra: my grandma was bi-polar at at time when little was understood about it. I believe that the more out-of-control she felt, the more it necessitated her controlling everyone around her. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. Lindad

What a miserable person your grandmother was, and like you wrote, made everyone around her miserable. And you, a 4 year old was made confused and probably scared. This is a sad memory that I hope you dealt with as you got older. Thank you for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully, Jan.

Thanks, Jan, for reading and sharing your thoughts with me. I spent 6 years in therapy attempting to rid myself of all those memories but they left some scars. Linda

Interesting story..I created this drawing for a coloring challenge to my fellow artist and photographers on the FAR side. Seems like many folks like to color again. It still can be fun for those who can't draw but love to color. Many post were cool and colorful..I even posted my color version. Add on (colored version ) with the title and you should be able to find it. Yes I could create drawings for coloring books like many other artists but that would just put me in that big ocean what others do. However, I still have not found any artist in the world, who can only just work with sharpie and Bic pens (only) and can blend the colors and shade. Many are taught to use pointillism (dotting). Many shade and blend over with color pencils and other art mediums. Of course that is what they are taught thru art classes from what I understand.. umpteen million wanna be artist out there . I just have to stand out there above the crowd. I say that because I never had a art class in my life. Also self taught myself with this office medium and now after a half century later I considered myself as a Master Sharpie/Bic artist. Don't let this cartoon fool ya..I'm a illustrator as well. Yes I have worked with writers before but a few years ago I started pursuing songwriters to make illustrated music videos. I do invite you to stop by YouTube.com and check out any of my numerous videos. Just search my name (MKFLOOD). They are a wide range of music and topics. Some I worked directly with the songwriters and some are just promos. If you don't like going on YouTube then you can find me on the Fanmusic side..yes I'm everywhere..lol..i do thank you for selecting my work. It is an honor to have my work included with yours. Great job overall and thanks again. MKFLOOD

mkflood: fascinating review. It is 99% promotion for your art and barely a mention about my story. It also appears that you lack empathy. Think about it. Linda

Ok..I'm grasping what your saying..it's fine with me..I'm not a writer..I'm just steady promoting my work..have to but look at the bright side..I'll be forgotten tomorrow and the next till you run across something of mine. Doesn't mean you will choose because I'm not that great reviewer..one thing for sure whether good or bad I won't be totally forgotten..wink wink

That story is disappointing from a reader perspective. We all have had good things happen to us and than watch the joy drain out of our bodies and make us wish we were somewhere else. The one thing significant is you were disappointed for your mother as well as yourself. People can be discouraged for life by seemingly small events. They aren't small when they happen. Good luck in the contest.

Robert: interesting review. Tells me that you lack empathy and doesn't help me with my writing skills at all. Linda

Hello Linda. I'm sorry I didn't make my comments clearer. The writing was excellent because it celebrated the exhilaration of getting the precious skates and then the disappointment of losing them. Your descriptive narrative was excellent in expressing the emotions you and your mother experienced. I also was taken with the sentence when you referred to "almost owning" roller skates.
    I'm sorry I didn't make myself clearer.

That's so sad. You want to either make them glad with you or, just try to stay out of their air space. I'm so sorry that you didn't get to own your roller skates. Thanks for sharing this sad but well written work. Well done!

Thank you, Jeffrey. In my mid-20's, I purchased a good pair of roller skates then passed them on to my first daughter once she wore the same size as me. But, I did get my roller skates! LOL Linda

Did we have the same grandmother occupying two separate bodies? I never thought there could be another grandmother meaner than mine. Even my aunt Pauline told me stories of how mean she was when they were growing up. This was well written. I hope you write the entire million stories. I can tell you from experience it does help to get it out there. BTW, did you see Lost in Yonkers? The grandmother had lost two out of four children. It hit me that my grandmother lost five out of twelve. After I lost two sonsout of four, I had anger issues andwondered if some grief counseling might have helped. I truly do feel for you.

Everyone suffered, even my grandfather who was an innocent bystander was somehow made at fault as grandma yelled, stomped her feet as she charged throughout the apartment slamming things and causing this horrible turmoil until she ran out of steam a couple days later. ... I think this would read a bit better if you took this long sentence and turned it into at least two sentences.

I am sorry your Grandmother was that cruel. My paternal grandmother was kind of like that, but still after fifty years, I dream good dreams about her and Grandpa, as there were good times as well.

Best wishes in the contest!
Drew

This is a very sad story. I'm sorry your grandmother took your skates away. I can imagine the confusion you would have felt being such a small child at the time.

What a sad story to read. It's a very good story and certainly makes your heart go out to that little girl. I'm sure it was a very hard thing to deal with. Great story. Shirley

I think it reads kinda like a memoir. I find that it is a really complete experience when reading. It is humorous, descriptive and endearing. I really enjoyed this piece

Zoe: I am shocked that you would find this story 'humorous'. There is no humor in it. It is quite sad, actually. But, thanks for reading. Linda
