My mother was scared to death of her mother so she was no help to me. Thank you for reading, now go rest your eyes! Linda

Awe, that seems to have been such a shame a such a waste. How could your grandmother take away the joy from her granddaughter and her daughter? What a sad story. Good luck in the contest. Ulla:)))

Wow! Some people just can't stand to see someone else enjoying themselves, even a granddaughter. I had an aunt like that, and every time I would visit my cousin she made it miserable for the both of us. A poignant tale of misery loves company. Excellent job!

Probably your grandma can be easily qualifying for the witch department. How could she ruin a mother joy of rewarding her child with something that will make her forget the missing of a dad. Probably she thought that once you live in her house, you should live the joy behind. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest.

I'm sure we can all relate to that situation. Only in my life it was my mother who would have taken the skates that my grandma bought. Very well written story and I hope you've had another pair of skates since. Happy Tuesday!

Yes, Stephanie, when in my 20's I bought a brand new pair of high top, white skates and went regularly to the roller rink. Thanks for reading and commenting. Linda

Wow, she sounds very scary and mean. Why there are joy suckers is beyond me.
However, it is a good story, well written and certainly invoked emotion in me.
Good luck with the contest.

Most grandmothers are delighted to have grandchildren, but not yours.
I wonder what kind of childhood she had. You've written a sad story.
I would love to see you write more. You probably could write a whole book.

My grandmother was bi-polar, unmedicated and before much was known about the disease. I'm sure that she was miserable and she made everyone around her miserable, too. Thanks for reading. Linda

What a horrible woman, Linda. Where did she get the sour grapes?
It really makes one wonder when you see someone that miserable what happened to make them that way. She made a lasting impression on you that's for sure. No wonder you are so sweet. Hugs. Nancy:)

Nancy, grandma was bi-polar before much was known about it so un-medicated. The more out-of-control she felt within, the more she needed to control everyone around her (at least that is my guess). Thanks for reading and for the 'sweet' message. Linda

My mother was the joysucker in my family. I loved her though. She had a tough start in life being a single mother in 1956. It wasn't like it is today.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day and God bless.

I think it's a great little story that actually illustrates the need for attention in the grandma who tries to usurp the stage the little girl is on with her skates. Classic example of psychology seething underneath the surface. Told with wit and plenty of knowledge of the personalities of the people involved which is necessary to give the reader a perspective estory
