Well, grandma sounds horrible. Maybe she should have gotten a job instead of your mother. I like how you made mention of grandpa getting hit with the wrath, even though he had nothing to do with it. Really wished this had been fiction. Hate to know people really suffer lives like this at the hands of others. Gretchen. And good luck with the contest.

Hello Livelylinda,
Marvelous piece of General Non-Fiction transparently depicting its theme!
Impressive, and perfectly matching the theme phraseology.
Smooth, spontaneous, and CAPTIVATING flow throughout from the beginning to the end with lovely imagery at some places.
Best of Luck!

This is sad that your divorced Mom had to have her joy taken away. I've known a few people who could suck the life out of a room. To bad you had to have a grandmother like that. Your story is well written and holds the reader's attention.

-Good artwork for your story, Linda.
-You told this so well, but
it is a happy and sad one, at the same time.
-It seems you and your mom
were very happy together, and she
wanted to do something extra
special, and how special those skates were.
-I remember having that kind of skate, too.
-I like how you describe having
them on, and then not managing
to balance too well, but you got
right back up.
-The joy you saw in your mother's
face must have made you beam.
-It is very sad when your grandmother
took the joy out the the whole thing,
and especially impacted your mother
so strongly.
-I could cry after reading this.
-You deserve to do very well in the contest.
-Thanks for sharing your story.

As I read this I hoped you got another pair of skates one day? Sad to read how your Grandma took away the joy from such a special moment. Perhaps she wanted a pair herself:)

Pam, in my mid-20's I purchased a good pair of roller skates and spent many an hour learning to skate. Passed them on to my first daughter once she was the same shoe size. Thanks for reading and commenting. Linda

Hi Linda! Guess what? You have THE WINNER here in the contest. I sould almost bet you on it. If I am any sort of judge, I say this is a wondeffully human story and may well be Story of The Month, dear friend. I loved it "Joy-sucking" was a killer description. I know somebody like that. Bless you and good luck Linda. :) Bob

Bob, I am so grateful to you for your exemplary comments about this little story and perfect score. I lived with the grandma for 12 years and almost every day was hell. I could write an entire book about it. Maybe I will write more stories, although, I usually write poetry . . .Linda

This is truly a tragic tale told well. I remember those skates--I loved them. They would have brought you so much joy that I had a great sadness in my heart for you and your poor thoughtful mother. I wonder why people don't get how much they hurt others with their rants and moods. This is a well written and moving piece. Well done.

I think this is a good entry for the True Story contest.
This short story about a cranky Gramma is well told.
Well done and I wish you luck with the contest.

Hello Linda,
You've written an excellent story that shows how
a young child can be influenced the actions of another,
especially a close relative like a grandmother.
She seemed been on sucking the joy out of life,
maybe that's how she grew up herself.
Sad for your mother, as well.
I remember those adjustable skates, had a pair myself.
Fortunately, there was no grandmother to snatch them away.
Very well written.
Best wishes to you
Robert

Hello livelylinda
Smiles Linda I had to think back when I got the same kind of roller skates. I liked how you told your story, and smiles I didn't; see any thing to be changed.
PS I was lucky I didn't have my grand mother to hinder my joy.
Gert
