I am so touched that you liked this short, emotional poem about my lost doggy love, my sweet furry girl Spiffy! I deeply appreciate your rating of six stars, that's wonderful! She was my little sweetheart, and my husband grew to love her too. He was there when we had to say goodbye, a sad day, but it's part of being a good dog owner -- knowing when they've had enough. I appreciate your beautiful review. God bless you, Mary Kay

Thank you for your excellent review -- yes, I cried a lot the day we had to euthanize Spiffy.
Thanks especially for your congrats on my award for reviewer of the month. I am so happy about it! It's the first time that I have ever won any type of prize in connection with my writing skills. It's not for writing but for reviewing, but I will happily accept it! It's a blessing from God, and it feels so good :-)
I didn't realize it was announced anywhere, I will have to look for it.
    God bless you too, Judester!

Yes, if you go to the top bar and open the little house, then pick fanstory. I really had never written anything when I first joined and have learned everything on this site. Just keep plugging away and it will come. Well done dear, j

A very well-written 2-4-2 poem about a beloved pet who passed away and is still missed today because of her unique personality and her way to entertain you by stealing food from you.

Thank you for your excellent review, Sandra. I'm not sure my husband would agree with that, haha! But yes, he misses her too.

What a lovely tribute to a sweet rescue dog. Our pets do become part of our families. Our daughter rescued a coon cat who passed away just a couple of months ago. He lived to be 22! And she took really good care of him just like you did your dog. We are the caretakers. And are rewarded with sweet memories. Thank you for sharing.

She looks like a friendly darling! Spiffy, what a name. "Faithful companion"- such a beautiful description of a dog. And "doggone" is just plain brilliant!

Yes, Spiffy was a sweetheart. When I walked her around the block, sometimes children would follow us -- it was like something out of a Disney movie. I had to muzzle her sometimes, because she would pick up bad things from the street (maybe something she learned before she was rescued).
But because of the muzzle and because she was so gentle, I was able to let a little child pet her, who had been afraid of dogs. She was very good with children!
Yes, the "dog gone" just came to me. I was hoping it didn't sound flippant. Thank you!

This is so cute. What a tribute to a dog who was well loved and who loved you well! I wish you well in the contest. Short poems are harder to write, but you've done well!:)

Thank you so much, Tina. I'm so glad that you see the cuteness in it. Yes, with short poems you have to be even more careful with every word. Spiffy and I had a great time together, and also with Jorge. She gave us some great fun! What a blessing. xoxo

A few weeks ago, I wouldn't be able to imagine that kind of a bond with a dog, as I have always been a cat person. But we got a dog forour joint Christmas present, a mixed breed terrier, chihuahua, dauchsund. I guess I am a dog person now, because I love the little thing. I've been missing out!

So good to hear that you're bonding with your new pooch! I've never owned a cat, but I have lived with people who owned them, and prefer dogs, even though I find cats interesting. It really depends on the cat! Yes, I would say you've been missing out, so Congratulations!

Thanks! Its like our new baby!
I have always thought dog lovers
    were the best people!

You're very welcome, Tina! I'm so glad you're loving your new fur baby! Dogs are incredibly engaging and so much fun. People who get a dog really have to be prepared to be totally involved, because they are wonderfully in-your-face, adorable creatures! Happy bonding!

    Yes...in my face! Haha...
    and she snores!

Very funny! You will find that they make a wide range of interesting sounds. You will always be amused!

    Now there's a poem
    for dog lovers! Snort,
    sigh and a bark!
Glad I met you on here!

Hahahaha! My Spiffy had a strange, multiple snort that sounded very much like a laugh -- so hilarious! Also, I do snore badly. Now, my downstairs neighbors told me that they heard the noise, but "realized" it had to be "the dog," because she sleeps on the floor. May God forgive me, but I didn't bother to correct them!
For awhile I couldn't figure out why Spiffy would fall asleep on the bed so nicely with me (this was while I was single, and also when she was still young and agile enough to jump up), but when I awoke, she would be in her own doggy bed on the floor. I finally realized that she was keeping me company while I was falling asleep, but once I started snoring, all bets were off -- the poor dog couldn't take it! I do have sleep apnea (mild to moderate) but just can't tolerate the CPAP machine -- much too uncomfortable to sleep. Jorge said it made me sound like Darth Vader! :-D

    Haha! Hey there!
    You are a vivid storyteller!
I'm back for a bit, having gotten
    the page underway. I miss
    everyone on here! Gotta cook
dinner but talk to you later!
    Hugs!
    PS...I snore too!

Sweet little miniature homage to a beloved pet named Spiffy, who looks like she would have made friends with everyone. I get a double meaning in the last two syllables of 'Dog gone!' with an emotional connotation as well as the literal meaning. Nice share.

Spiffy,
My faithful girl.
Dog gone!

Works for the contest and it is so true, the love we put into our extended family is just like our children, and we do miss them forever.

Hi Mary, When we retired to this country home in 1996, we had two elderly Scotty dogs and a Kuvasz, named Nootka (Eskimo for Big Wind) That's how he was. Always having fun he was my dog in so many ways, that I wrote poems about him. Weighing in at over 130lbs, in the winter, with deep snow on the ground, he was almost invisible for his long white coat, blended in so well with the snow. When taking our morning walk over the fields across the road from us, he loved to rush at me, go between my legs and as he did so would twist and set me down in the snow! He'd then spin and pin me on the ground, by sitting on my midriff, and give my face a licking! I would be helpless with laughter at his antics! At 7 years of age, and in his prime, I began to notice changes in his demeanour and attitude. Never vicious but changed in ways I could not understand. Finally I took him to the local vet - a very compassionate man - who examined and X-rayed him. My heart was broken with his prognosis. Nootka had a very advanced brain tumour, and was barely able to function! He was doing so on instinct alone! The vet's verdict was fatal. as he advised that no operation was possible, and secondly, it was better for Nootka to be euthanised and go peacefully to his Nirvana, rather than suffer further pain! Even today as I write this, my eyes are tear filled for he was a kindred spirit and faithful companion, in so many ways. I honestly believe that when I gave the vet my okay, Nootka, gave me a look of approval and gratitude. I gave him a long tearful hug, said my goodbyes, crying my heart out! Me a man who had seen pain and suffering in many parts of the world - I could not contain myself! The vet had left me to say my goodbyes privately - and when I came back out to his reception, He gave me a hug, and refused to take any recompense for his services! 15 years on, I still miss that dog - as does my wife Pauline - and recalling him and his antics, always brings tears to both our eyes. His picture is part of my screen saving array! But enough! Your writing has had the same effect of bringing back many memories! I truly know what it is to lose and miss a friend that never judged me, and gave me love that is only matched by that of my darling wife! No matter how much I love and enjoyed my dogs, since that day - fifteen years have passed - I cannot being myself to possess another dog. Maybe I'll see if I can find my poems (written about Nootka) and post same. I'm sure Spiffy means as much to you as Nootka did to us. Fondest regards and never let those memories go Mary. Denis.

Hi Denis. Thank you for your excellent review, and especially for sharing about Nootka and your other two doggies. Nootka sounds like he was quite a character! So much fun and such a treasured friend, so sad to send him on his way. What a terrible blow! You were very perceptive, but you knew your dog well.
I think Spiffy had a brain tumor also, but a much different kind -- one on the pituitary gland, that was causing canine Cushing's disease. During the last 2-3 years of her life, she had a variety of unpleasant symptoms, and we kept her as long as she had some quality of life. It may have been connected to flea powder I had used earlier on (before they came up with the droplets that protected the animals systemically, which could also cause problems, for all we know), but I will never really know; she was very elderly. I cried when we had to euthanize her, but I knew it was the right time. Yes, we never forget. I hope you will share some of your Nootka poems, if you can find them :-) Mary Kay

I agree with how pets leave an impact on our lives. I still think of my cocker spaniel, Savannah, and Tyre before her.
I now have Cici. She is part boxer.
Thank you for sharing about your pet, Spiffy.
