I think this is a lovely verse, telling us the truth about lilacs.
Well written, nicely rhymed, very well done.
Lilacs are one of my favorite shrubs as they smell so very nice.

This beautifully written story in a poem is marvelous and filled with fascinating information. My grandmother had an outhouse in her backyard and two large lilac trees stood beside each side of the door. I love the subject and way you presented this wonderful poem. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

Lilacs are symbols for sacredness and peace as the color purple implies. All life is sacred and I would've chosen those or possibly white roses as we did for the gravesite of my infant granddaughter, Esther Grace Law. This is very interesting and telling of the value of life people once held, but our world seems to be drifting from at present. A beautiful story within a poem to me, and not bothersome at all.
Sending you my best today as always,
Sally xo

Wow. This is a very well written factual story, put to such beautiful poetics. I love the details and the way you tell the tale. Even words like "disturb" and "shock" flow gently as though they were pleasant thoughts. Outhouses and stillborn babes... what a practical and lovely gesture to plant lilacs with their beauty and strong perfume. There are no awkward parts and I say that generously, because you write about ideas, that are not thought of as ideal for a poem. The flow, meter, and rhymes are all top-notch. These are wonderful historical facts that I wasn't aware of. Thank you for the information, and the spectacular way of presenting it through the art of poetry.
Take care, Jesse

    Hello Jesse!
I am thrilled that you find my offering "exceptional!" I'm just glad I found an article to corroborate what I knew to be true, as I am certain many would question. Here on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, Michigan, we are surrounded by homesteads dating back 150+ years. Along with the rows of lilacs, we are also surrounded by cherry tree orchards. But another unique characteristic of this area is stone markers - piles of stones-left by Indians to mark trails from the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula. Future poem! :)
So very pleased my words resonated with you!
    Thank you again, Jesse!

    Hello Diane.
It must be wonderful to live surrounded by historical homesteads. Your poem tells a unique story. It does sound like the stone markers left by Indians could be a future poem. The review and exceptional rating were well deserved.
    Take care, Jesse

You certainly educated me about lilacs and I do intend to follow that link to learn more. How touching that unborn babies were buried beneath them, as though to allow their little souls to still live among us in their own way and contribute their own kind of beauty . Thank you for sharing this.

Lilacs will capture our noses telling their presence of oncoming spring. The writer informative statement bringing many aspects about these flowers, from out house to babies graves. Well presented in my opinion of this read.

You tell an interesting story in your rhyming quatrains. I would love to see those rows of lilac bushes you describe. I was struck by the information about miscarried foetuses. I read somewhere that lilacs are said to offer protection from ghosts. So their fragrant beauty may have served a double purpose.

A line from an old song just came to mind

"We'll gather lilacs in the spring again".

Blessings Julia

A very well-written interesting poem about the uses of the clustered lilacs. The outhouse can be very unattractive when it stands alone far away from the house is an excellent idea to bring some fragrant lilacs to make it user friendly.

Hello Diane, this is a beautiful, sometimes sad, story in a poem. I enjoyed the read very much and will follow the site you mention in your author notes. You rhyme and meter are perfect and although a long poem it did not seem so, it was so interesting. This should have been in the contest - story in a poem entry. Very well one. Love Dorothy xx

This is a wonderful poem with a little Americana history. I do still have an outhouse at my cabin and I was wondering what to plant there when I replace it next summer, now I know. Lilacs are one of my favorites and a sure sign spring is back.
I make lilac water by steeping the blossoms in water for a couple hours. I am sure this is what angels drink haha ...heavenly. Bravo, judester

    Hello Judester!
I am thrilled that you find this offering "exceptional!" It was a bit of a challenge to pen as I have never written about outhouses!
If you plant lilacs where your outhouse stood, they will surely thrive! :)
    So very pleased you enjoyed!
    Thank you!
