This was a wonderful but sad story that many of us can identify with because we do not like to see animals killed. My nephew always says, "If we don't shoot them they will over-populate and die of starvation." I come from hunting country so I am sure you dad feels a lot like my nephew. I try to understand, but like you, it is hard. Your poem was beautifully structured and nicely rhymed.

This is such a captivating poem with so much emotion and excellent meter. Truly a pleasure to read and definitely worthy of six stars. I love deer, I think they are absolutely beautiful and I can't imagine having to watch one die in front of me let alone cause its death. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece.

That was excellent! You certainly deserved to win this contest.
I never had to shoot a deer, thank heavens, but I remember going deer hunting with my new husband many years ago when I moved from GA to TX and feeling the sadness when he shot one.
I do have to say, doves didn't bother me, though. :)
Your rhyme and meter are seamless, enabling the reader to read straight through, enjoying your writing, without pausing at errors.
good job.

Truly excellent ballad style poem that is a worthy winner of the prompt. You describe the scene and the emotions very well. I suppose that the lust for hunting is embedded in DNA. At one time it meant the difference between human survival and death by starvation. Not any more.

This is a cleverly written poem that captures the horror of the hunt very well indeed. It is formal in concept based on ballad metre that alternates iambic tetrameter with trimeter in its perfect form. Although here there are several metrical substitutions, these are inserted so that the metrical 'feel' of the poem is maintained throughout.

Aah... the things we do to please our fathers. I admire your well constructed poem and its message. I too dislike blood 'sports'. You have portrayed the situation very well - the woods, the majestic animal, the father's delight, and the child's distress.

Wow. I sympathize with the girl who was the daughter in this poem. Your words flow so perfectly with the syllable count, and you never once let up on the pattern of your rhyme scheme. Well done!

This is a powerful write and I know hunting goes on in America and sometimes in England too as it has been a tradition and I don't agree with it at all and for a young boy it is frightening, your handled the subject with great subtlety and innocents, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

This poem is excellent and I wish I had six stars to give it. The horrid experience of a traumatized child so clear. (In some cases it occurs as squirrel hunting. And even a male child can be traumatized.) Excellent photograph choice. One suggestion: Brown font. The white is hard to read.
